Heck I bet we could convince the Clippers to take JR!!! They need another scorer. Tyson n Felton to Dallas and we'd be on our way.

I think Hardaway would probably be a better pg in the triangle. He played some in college I believe and he just seems like a much much headier guy that Shump.
Having that upbringing with his dad, having played in a very structured college system, being fast on cuts and active, etc. I just see Hardaway being a great
initiator. I don't think it would take much from his role now and not slow him down getting open. That said, having him and Shump out there and mixing it
up is another option.

Anyone else think Phil actually likes that guy we got from Toronto as a bit of a ball handler at PF?

Id make JR PG before Hardaway. Hardaway has one thing in mind when he gets the ball and that is to jack it up

THJs handle was kind of loose last year. I know, it's the last thing most people would expect from the son of the creator of the Utep Two-Step. But that was definitely the case last season and I wouldn't feel comfortable increasing THJ's ball handling duties until he's shown improvement.

Shump has played in a 192 nba games but his salad days were the first 42 games of his nba career when the team was 6 games under .500 and didn't look like it had a chance of making the playoffs? From Shump's scouting report on draftnet:
Weaknesses: Lacks stability/discipline on the court ... Inconsistent … Not efficient at all ... Horrid shot-selection ... Liable to shoot at any time, even when being closely guarded ... Likes to shoot off the dribble on a good deal of his isolation possessions, despite only connecting on 20% of these attempts ... Shoots nearly 5 three pointers per game, despite only shooting 27.8% from behind the arc ... Will often go for the flashy play instead of the easy play, which can lead to unforced turnovers ... Very poor jump shooter, and hasn't shown any improvement in this area during his three-year career with Georgia Tech ... Needs the ball in his hands a lot to be effective on offense and he certainly won't have as many isolation opportunities at the next level ... Should look to take advantage of his size and strength more in the post, but has yet to add this dimension to his game ... Attitude has been questioned in the past, but to his credit he appears to have matured over the past year ...

Overall: Shumpert has rare physical tools for a guard on any level of basketball ... His defense should get him on an NBA roster and possibly into a rotation, but his poor basketball IQ will certainly hurt his effectiveness ... Should be an early-mid second round pick this year ...

Three years in and most of the faults pointed out are still very evident in his game.

I also have tried to keep an optimistic eye regarding Shump. His athletic abilities have kept him in the running, but have not taken him to the next level. The person in his drafting report is the person that we have now. If he can't show the improvement that one expects from a 4 year player, he has to go.

STAT would be just as bad on D as Hibbert is this series. But STAT would at least score for you and make a layup lol maybe that's what Indy needs.

DeAndre Kane in my opinion would be a complete steal that might not be even drafted

Spencer Dwinwiddie could fall as well because he is recovering from a torn ACL and needs to work on his upper body strength but he can be compared to George Hill
And he has very good shooting mechanics as well, possibly becoming a George Hill/Billups type of PG/SG as a high ceiling

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_8FX6VbbNw

I like Burton as well, though he is more of a scoring combo guard that has lottery type potential/talent in him that could last to late 1st rounder to early 2nd rounder

Regardless, I think we need to get Ron Harper as an assistant or development coach to help the PG understand the role in the Triangle

Now if we were to use the MLE, in no order

Darren Collison

Sessions
Bayless

Livingston and another player, I would not give him the full 3.2m MLE because of his knee injury concerns, possibly using some of it on an undrafted for a 3 year team option deal

With the 5m MLE, there are many combinations of players to target to use on 2 players or possible get to come for less with Phil Jacksons relationship with Ariza and Gasol

Papabear Says

So far his relationships has not worked out.

i would pretty much trade anyone on the team. i love this kid's passion. he is an unrestricted FA though.

Hardaway did a good job in College when he had to play point. He's got more ability than JR as a PG so to speak. But really it doesn't matter cuz in the Triangle there isn't a serious role for PG. It seems that most don't understand just how limited the so called PG is in the Triangle. This is why I put video in here to prove just how unnecessary a normal PG was for the Bulls. If you could start Ron Harper at the point then anyone can play the point in the Triangle. All you have to do is be able to bring the ball up and make a simple pass and cut.

Here's a great old video to help show the Triangle. Tex and Phil explain the basic principles and options. If people don't get this after watching this video, God help em.

THJ had few opportunities to play PG for Michigan because Trey Burke was so ball dominant. It shows in THJ's assist numbers and useage rate. I'm not saying he can't get to point where he could facilitate an offense. But the team is asking for trouble if they expect THJ to be successful in a role he's never had fill before in the pro or college level. Not only would THJ have to bring the ball up against pressure but he would probably have to defend other point guards. Let him master those things against shooting guards first.

Just cuz Trey was playing doesn't mean THJ didn't get to handle the ball and make some plays. He did in fact get to do that, but more importantly it's not about actually BEING a PG. As i've pointed out many times Ron Harper played the "point" for 6-7 years for Phil and because the Triangle doesn't really require a lot of the PG spot, which I did show in the video above, it makes it far less important that you have "Ball Dominant" skills. All you have to do is make very simple early decisions in the Triangle.

Look at the video again and pay attention to how most of the plays in the Triangle started and what the requirements of the PG usually were. Tex calls one of the guards a "Push Guard" he's just pushing the ball up court and has a very quick and easy decision to either feed the post of make the "Lag Pass" to the guard coming right behind him to the top of the 3pt line and from there its all about player movement which is triggered once they make the "Lag Pass". It's all about a team knowing what to do and when based on the defense. If a defender does a certain thing the players know what action to take. It's much better than standing and watching a PG pound the ball and work off PnR. It doesn't require a real PG in order to work.

This was a good tutorial on the triangle, but i think the basic fundamentals is where all of our guards suck at (except pablo)...NOT JUST MOVING, BUT MOVING WITH A PURPOSE, The best line was "YOU HOLDING THE BALL, YOUR HOLDING UP ALL YOUR TEAMMATES"

There's only a few players on this roster (to me) that will absolutely thrive in this system Melo, JR, THJ, TYLER, Pablo, I think shump will have a hard time figuring it out, it really depends on the coach.

It's not rocket science. Shump would have to learn to make the VERY SIMPLE read of feeding the post or making the lag pass or making the 2 pass and cutting. I just don't think he won't be able to do that. It's great for our guards cuz they don't have to pound the ball and create! Just pass and move. The whole thing is triggered by defensive moves. If they double the post there's a set move and pass for that. What I love most is EVERYONE is involved and moving. Practicing the moves and passes over and over should eventually make it second nature but a team has to remain patient and committed to it. It's gonna take time but it will be worth it.

I understand that the triangle offenses places fewer responsibilities on the lead guard. But the triangle wouldn't take away the need for THJ to guard the opposing team's point guard or bring the ball against heavy full court pressure. THJ had trouble doing these things as the teams tertiary ball handler. He could grow into the role, but it's too much to expect from him entering next season. There isn't a Kukoc or Pippen around to help pick up the slack. We have Odom, but I'm inclined to believe he's washed up until he proves otherwise.
