I don't think it's just that- I don't see Derek Fisher getting that- I think probably Kerr's friends in the media helped boost his hype.

Kerr just had to say two words "James Dolan" and Phil wouldnt have an answer since GS was waiting in the wings with a pile of cash.

He gets $25mil even if he realises he can't actually coach! Can't blame him for agreeing to take that!

On the plus side, this shows PJ isn't just going to overpay anyone, so it looks good for the Melo situation (I hope we re-sign him but not at a ridiculous contract).

We had to start drawing a line in the sand at some point- for too long everyone has known we panic in negotiations and over pay. That's why I was also glad we didn't trade Tim Jr and another first for Lowry. Sometimes you have to show that you are willing to walk away, eventually it will pay off in the long term, even if you take a few short term hits.

1. Can we stop calling Phil "PJ"? It makes me want to choke someone.

2. So GS fired a rookie coach that got them further than they've been in decades and overpay for the Linsane Coach Kerr. A 5 year deal for a complete non-coach. You bet Steve's smart.

3. Get us Mark Jackson, get us someone with at least rec league experience. Maybe Phil starts perusing the WNBA for a coach next? What's the next step up from absolutely no experience?

As I said Phil isn't a miracle worker, he doesn't walk on water, and he puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us.

NY isn't as easy a sell as many would like to think. looking at the teams in the playoffs, you just see how far we are from putting a quality product on the floor and how far we are from having a true franchise talent, or talents to lead this team...

on the other hand...putting all our eggs in one basket, for a guy who never coached an NBA game in his life wasn't that smart either. I think Kerr is a good analyst, knows basketball, but I wasn't all that sold on him, the coaching search should have been expanded from the start...

I say good luck to him in GS.. that is a 50 win team... the pressure is now on him to make sure they stay that way..

In terms of PJax and the Knicks plans this is only a minor bump in the road. There are a TON of coaches out there who would love to coach this team. PJax wanted a young protege who had a similar philosophy but even he has said that he had other men in mind who he felt had the right stuff.

In the end we won't even give this a second thought when it's all said and done. Kerr clearly didn't want the challenge. Whoever we end up with WILL want to be here and that's all that matters in the end. We still have Phil and the plan is still in place. We'll plug in another talented man to get this done. Probably a blessing in disguise. Wouldn't want Kerr here with his mind elsewhere.

I agree with you. This isn't a big deal. Sometimes getting what you want is a bad thing. Imagine if MDA didn't take the NYK offer that would have left the Knicks with Thibs or Jackson which might have worked out better.

trust me, the knicks not doing well had little to do with dantoni, just like all the great coaches before him.....

smackeddog wrote:Sorry but 5 years and $25mil for a coach with zero experience is ridiculous and a terrible prescident. Marc Jackson got 3 years $6mil- please someone explain to me what the difference is. Ridiculous. Warriors got played and bought into the hype. Kerr tried to play us with all the leaked 'he favors the Knicks'- now suddenly it was all about geography all along (news flash- the geography hasn't changed!), so he was clearly using us to get the warriors to increase their offer.

PJ did the right thing- my only issue is it seems like he doesn't have much of a back up plan. This is a stupid move for the warriors, but somehow were going to be the ones who get blasted- ridiculous.

warriors paid, but look, they have a great foundation already... I think they see kerr as a good basketball mind, moreso than anything.. that team is talented enough to win 50 games regardless of who is on the bench, at least I think that is the warriors feeling... they are taking a chance on a guy who they feel can make a difference in their franchise, just not only sitting on their bench either..

This

Yes

and you too! seriously though, I will quote the first paragraph for you "Steve Kerr makes the smart play rejecting Phil Jackson and Knicks for Warriors coaching job. By taking an offer to coach the Warriors, Kerr gets a team with better players and a franchise with a better infrastructure than he would have had with the Knicks."

ounds like a pretty honest and fair assesment to me. I await your comments.
