Baylor a FORMER NBA great, and respected exec put this clown on blast, and the NBA did basically nothing...
Didn't Baylor lose his court case though? What was the evidence that he presented that was so damning? Not that i think Sterling is innocent nice guy, but was there really enough to go on to punish him over the Baylor age discrimination situation?
He lost because he just didn't have enough. He also didn't stand up to the guy when he should have (fear of losing his top-end job when back then no blacks have ever reached that high), and that contributed to his conflict. There were also other documents, memos that hindered the case for him but nothing solid to prove Sterling was discriminating on hiring, especially Baylor is black really helped Sterling look good.
Exactly why i responded to tkf's insistence that the NBA should have done something at that time...there wasn't anything concrete to punish him for.
I totally agree with you on that. The NBA did absolutely nothing to help Baylor and continued to let Sterling be an owner and even further, gave him the chance to get Chris Paul while blocking CP3 going to Lakers. I'm not saying what NBA did was wrong in terms of the blocking, but they should have tried to remove Sterling as an owner even if it's just his long time reputation as a racist (weird, considering he's a full blown Jew) is good enough reason for me if I were an NBA executive.
Dude, everyone can be racist, including Jews.
But what could the NBA really do about Sterling? Imagine a league where a guy could lose his investments on supposition and hearsay. Would you want to invest hundreds of millions of dollars on something like that? Do you think that is a good model for steady growth? The circumstances today are a little different though because Sterling has forced the league's hand. But even I, a Black man, would hate to see that happen to a guy without concrete evidence.
As for the league sending CP3 to LAC, they were doing themselves a favor on both fronts. They effectively turned a team in one of the largest markets in the world into a contender AND they got a slew of assets for a team they were looking to offload to a prospective owner, for the most money as possible. In business, there are no morals; only profit motives. It's why we need another agency/entity to regulate them on that front.
