basically saying that some veteran players (with rings i might add) can't come in and give you nothing against one of the worse teams in the league and you rather run you star player into the ground, a star player who has been horrible in the 4th qtr because of his minutes in the first 3 qtrs..

WOODSON YOUR A FKNG IDIOT!!1

Truth....Dude runs Melo into the ground....His time management is awful....

ehh i don't think that's all on woodson. i think teams have figured the knicks out: it is a fact, a discernible pattern, that melo gets off to fast starts and then fades late in games. he is a poor finisher for the most part. this may be due to his own lack of conditioning as well as his own poor in-game strategy. the successful players seem to make a point of working in the other direction: assure that everyone else is involved throughout the game, and then turning it up at the end during crunch time. if melo was capable of playing strategically and with some patience and craft then he would follow the same pattern of success that his superiors have enjoyed and he would not be an empty-calorie player.

it is really time to take off the blinders with this guy and stop looking elsewhere to assign blame. he is as much at fault as anyone, perhaps moreso.

So you have a star player who's conditioning doesn't allow him to lead the league in minutes played..

What the heck are you guys talking about, he's not the pg by any stretch..IF the stupid ass coach had one once of sense he would look at a damn stat sheet and know his star players production decreases because he's tired by the 4th after already logging in 37 minutes, or the fact that he's playing harder (not always smarter) than any player on the team.

does melo play hard on defense? durant guarded melo almost the entire game but melo did not guard durant. lebron and durant go head to head they guard each other much more of the time than with melo guarding them.

and what makes you think other knicks are not playing as hard as melo? and if they aren't, what is the reason behiund their not playing as hard?

i have my own theories but what are yours?

I guess that means that Magic and Bird were two fat-asses...They never guarded each other....

one was a guard and the other was a small forward. apples to apples please

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Bird never guarded the other teams best small forward and Magic never guarded the oppositions best guard....Bird used to guard Laimbeer for crying out loud....Bottom line, both are all time greats but both were average defenders....

uptown both were positive-sum players on balance. they made others better around them better than almost anyone else who ever played. hell they made each other better. both did enough on defense-- bird was an underrated defender until his back started going-- and both did more than enough (to say the least) on offense to warrant that label of "positive-sum." lastly they were tremendous leaders.

melo? he is and does none of those things but he acts like he's all that. he won't ever win that way.

you get the 6th seed with this team since the East is a lost cause; Washington has it currently at 2 games under .500 And to answer your 2nd question, I know a team that had a really similar back court that got the 2 seed. You're NY Knicks last year. We don't have Kidd this year, but we have THJ.

anyway, yea, in the East, with the pieces that are there, this team could have flirted with.500 which is all they needed to do. It's not that different from last years' team. And if losing all that "veteran leadership" has been this devastating...yea that's on the coach too then.

That doesn't address the question. You're just admitting that even within a conference of lost causes, we still have the worst back-court.
It has nothing to do with something vague like "veteran leadership." We simply lost a very efficient backcourt player and our other players aged badly. The actual #s are right there. You can look at the production by position on 82games.com. We had an average backcourt last year but the worst in the league this year.

This is the original quote I responded to....Melo isn't the only elite player that doesn't guard the oppositions best player, was my only point. Lebron is a defensive player of the year candidate, yet Battier guards Melo more than James' does. Ewing was our best player, yet in the finals, Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley elected to play Oakley and Mason on Hakeem......There are generally 2 reasons why a teams best player doesn't guard the opposing teams best player: 1. Said teams best player isn't necessarily the teams best defensive player. 2. The coach is actually coaching his team and doesn't want his best player in foul trouble or tiring down the stretch of the game.

I'm not trying to argue that Melo is a good defensive player. He's an average defender at best. Many times, he'll play defense with his arms rather than his feet. So, as a coach, why would I have Melo chasing Durant around the court with the risk of Melo picking up quick fouls resulting in my best player and scorer spending valuable game time on the bench? Durant may be leading the league in freethrow attempts, so it wouldn't be wise as a coach to put Melo in that situation because we need his points. On top of that, Melo is already damn near 40mins per game, don't you think guarding Durant on one end, then coming back on the other trying to score buckets is tiring? You may disagree with this theory and comment on Melo's conditioning, but many coaches believe in the same theory. This is why Battier guards Melo most of the game and if the game is tight, you may see Lebron guard Melo on certain occasions down the stretch. But never for the whole game because its tiring.

And I'm certain that any NBA player who is playing near 40mins a night is in pretty good shape....

i don't know. this cross matching stuff is simply an acknowledgement of the inferiority of certain players. i wish there was a way to track who guards melo more, and when, between lebron and battier. you seem to think it's mostly battier but i am not sure about that. what i am sure of is that lebron and durant went head to head for the majority of the game the last time they played and it was just a great thing to see. and both are small forwards. i think your point about ewing and olajuwon underscores how overrated ewing was. centers should be guarding centers. and that of course applies to the notion of melo being overrated.

my contention is that you have to be a positive-sum player. if you are not good defensively then you have to be that much better offensively, and vice versa.

it's apparent to me that Woodson stinks. I think he looked better than he actually was because MDA had installed the offense and Kidd was there to make sure it got executed... now that it's all on him he has shown his true worth (or lack thereof).

This roster no longer makes the extra pass and the defense stinks. I see no effort. Maybe that's on the players and the lack of talent on the roster... but Woodson is not bringing anything to the table. You could argue he's not taking anything off the table. But he certainly is not bringing anything to the table and the team needs some sort of change

I agree with many of your points. The FO sucks. Dolan is so lucky this team is in NYC vs. OKC. Only in NYC could you have a full house with a sucky team. Maybe if people didn't go to the games when Dolan undermine basketball minds like Donnie Walsh this team would be successful. Dolan is a skitzo! This team isn't going to do anything while he meddles. Until the day Dolan allows this team to run by a proven FO unhindered. This team will not go anywhere.

Woodson has to take a brunt of the blame, no doubt. His lack of an imagination on offense, the HS style switching on all picks on defense, etc. However, I'm on record as saying I believe he overachieved last year. I think we can all admit, this is not a very talented roster. The production of Felton, JR and Shump has dropped significantly from last year to this....Woodson's biggest downfall this year is not getting the same commitment on the defensive end from this team as he got last year....

Woody is gone
