35-110 = 32% shooting over his last 4 game in the playoffs. 38% over all.

When I would talk about Carmelo's poor playoff shooting %s the most constructive retorts I would get would be things like hater and MDA apologist.

Well how do you deny this? How do you build a team thats supposed to contend around a guy who chucks like this? When you see the volumes off poor shots he's putting up in these playoffs you can see pretty easily how his career 41% shooting and terrible post season record do go hand in hand after all.

Maybe we could get away with this against the Nets with no Rondo and Pierce shooting worth of crap. This wont work against the Pacers.

Knicks should win a couple games but this has Pacers in 6 written all over it. Hoping Im wrong, but hard to see us advancing built like this.

I guess that's that freedom, but I don't have that mindset. I want to be as efficient as possible."

Well, That's funny considering Wade had 4 consecutive games where he shot under 40% last year in the playoffs, and totaling 9 under 42% .. And yet he kept shooting.

Wade was in a slump in the semi-conference finals ... didn't stop shooting, and eventually put together a few efficient games

He didn't stop shooting none whatsoever when his shot wasn't falling. That's exactly why Melo is still shooting. Only way out of a slump is to shoot your way out of it and then put together a few great games. If we're honest, Wade has a lot of shooting nights like this, just backs it up with shooting 60 - 70% some nights which gives his overall a really great boost.

Wade's entirely right. It's clear he tries to play by that philosophy. I don't see why you're selecting individual games where he shot poorly. I'm sure if you asked him, he'd acknowledge that his shot selection is not outstanding in 100% of the games.

Those are consecutive series during the playoffs. All from this year and from the semi and conference finals. not liked i just picked random games during the season. My point is, even after shooting that way for consecutive games during the playoffs, he didn't stop jacking up shots either

And he's been finishing all playoffs. He needs to be the guy to get Melo out of this funk by setting up easy shots for him. Melo has a confidence issue right now.

Do you not realize Melo and company are having a hard time because we aren't getting good PG play? Felton is looking to get his shot off INSTEAD of setting guys up.

Felton gets to pick his spots since he has the ball in his hands on most plays. Kidd and Prigioni are too old for the Pacer guards.

really??

Yea. Please watch the game and see where Melo is getting the ball.

I did. He gets it. Pounds it. Pounds it. Pounds it. Pounds it. 8... 7... 6... times to drive. Defenders collapse into the paint.. 4... 3... 2... force up the shot.

Go watch the game. Thats that what happening.

One thing... I will not question MElo's effort. Dude is leaving it all on the floor which is why I have some hope still for this series. The effort is there. But like Bip said, time an time again he threw himself against the wall which Hibbert was and was crying he wasnt getting the calls against one of the best shot blockers in the game.

As for Kobe... PLEASE let it go. This is the first time Melo was able to outplay Paul Pierce to win a playoff series. Supporting cast? When Melo starts picking up the all NBA first team defense awards year after year after year he wont hear a peeep from anyone about his FG%. But he's not a defensive player. He's a scorer is finally playing some defense. And right now his scoring sucks and Knicks have lost 3 of the last 4 playoff games for no other glaring reason than they have a guy taking 27.5 shots a game during that stretch and hitting 32% of them.

So far I have heard poor coaching and poor PG play. I believe someone left out MDA's lingering coaching still a negative factor?

To be fair Melo going to the basket was a good thing he got fouled hard on a lot of those drives but no whistle. There were three instances that I recall he got hit if it were Wade or LeBron they get the call. The foul by Hansbro was a flagrant, there was a drive where the called a charge on Melo you could clearly see that Melo was going sideways to Hibbert and slide under Melo and refs called foul. There's was one where Melo missed the dunk and clearly you see Hibberts elbow hit Melo in the face.

I understand you goto the next play. But in the NBA if you don't complain and put the seed in the refs head for the next game you won't get the call. The refs allowed the Pacers to be very physical with the Knicks. The refs allowed the Pacers to be a throw back team.

Fair enough. Still, I would say there's a difference between taking 18 shots (Wade's average from the games you listed) and closer to 28 or whatever Melo's taking. Also, I'd bet that Wade distributed the ball well and racked up assists in many of those games. He wasn't just chucking shots every time he touched the ball.

Yea, we agree. Melo needs to be taking less than 25 shots. this has to be his mindset every game unless he's on fire. We lost by 7 points last night. Maybe if he took 10 less shots, we hit 5/10 and add an extra 10pts. We agree %100 on that. Right now i cringe every time he shoots but still need him to take those shots.

I know he likes to box in the off season, but right now we need him to study the game more than we need him doing that. His basketball IQ needs improvement.

It's a philosophy he honed in on this year. Not sure why last year's playoff stats would factor here and why you stopped there. You could of went back further. Wade has one of the MOST HISTORICAL EFFICIENT INDIVIDUAL PLAYOFF STATS OF ALL TIME, which resulted in a Championship.

I already called out Wade when he made these comments a month ago, getting on his Soap Box..... but what he's saying is PRINCIPALLY PURE.

He/Lebron/Durant took a different approach THIS YEAR..although they've had careers of being highly efficient players.

Our 2 Chuckers don't have that mindset.

Stars need help. Melo is playing with castaways.

Melo and JR's supporting cast shot .553 from the field yesterday. That's not good enough?!

Papabear Says

But they 65% shooting to the Pacers. So what does shooting 55% mean. Or do you expect Melo to guard 5 players.

Some of you guys are the most ungrateful SOB's I've ever known. Maybe we trade Melo and get pieces and then get rid of JR will that make you happy? For the first time in 13 years we go to the second round because of Melo. Yes he is having a tough playoff run at scoring but lets be real. We have a center who can't shoot and the rest of the starting line up would not be starters on any of the playoff teams that went to the 2nd round. Some of you remind me of spoiled brats never satisfied. The only way some of you will have peace and satisfaction is get some draft picks and hopeful players and then you will be happy until we loose a few games and then you are ready to trade them or get rid of them. Melo does not have a great supporting cast. This team sinks or swims with Melo. How in the hell do you expect for our starting lineup to compeat with the Pacers? They are big and better. The only way we win is for Melo to put together some great games. it's on his back. We just don't have the players yet. So stop belling about Melo Melo Melo He can't do this by him self and with a Center who can't shoot the rock we are dead in the water. Instead of whining about Melo you better be hoping and praying that he comes back with some great games. Melo has a target on his back saying get him stop him hurt him. Get real we don't have the pieces to beat the Pacers they are too big and too strong. Face the facts and if we loose don't blame Melo alone, blame the team. And the only way we win will be if Melo comes back with great games. So the man you are hating on is the man who is the only one who can save us. If you think there is another way you are dreaming.

When I placed my NBA MVP vote a few weeks ago, I knew I would be in the minority. I knew LeBron James was the prohibitive favorite to win his fourth award because he unquestionably is the best player in the game.

I voted for Carmelo Anthony based on his importance to the New York Knicks, who, if you haven’t been paying attention the past decade, have failed to be relevant.

When the voting was announced Sunday afternoon, I was flabbergasted to learn I was the lone voter among 121 to not give LeBron a first-place vote, truly believing Anthony, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and perhaps even Kobe Bryant would snag a first-place vote or two.

Firstly, when I submitted my vote in mid-April, I had no idea I would be the only voter to leave LeBron out of first. This isn’t Mrs. Wilson’s class, I don’t walk around asking fellow sportswriters their answers to the US History quiz. I had no idea whom the writers were voting for, so this was no LeBron conspiracy.

Secondly, this isn’t the Best Player in the Game award, it’s the Most Valuable Player award, and I think what Anthony accomplished this season was worthy of my vote. He led the Knicks to their first division title in 19 years.

That’s a long time ago.

Anthony led the league in scoring average and basically carried an old Knicks team to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Amar’e Stoudemire missed most of the season with knee issues, Raymond Felton missed six weeks, and Tyson Chandler dealt with nagging injuries, leaving Anthony, J.R. Smith, and a bunch of lottery picks from the mid-1990s to win 54 games and beat the Miami Heat three times.

LeBron can win the MVP award every year. He is that good. And it’s to the point where I put him on a Michael Jordan scale. Jordan won five MVP awards but could have earned 10. In the 1992-93 season, Jordan averaged 32.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.8 steals and shot 49.5 percent from the field.

And the MVP award went to Charles Barkley.

So my vote had more to do with Anthony and less to do with the dominance of LeBron. If you were to take Anthony off the Knicks, they are a lottery team. James plays with two other All-Stars, the league’s all-time 3-point leader, a defensive stalwart, and a fearless point guard. The Heat are loaded.

If LeBron was taken away from the Heat, they still would be a fifth or sixth seed. He is the best player of this generation, a multifaceted superstar with the physical prowess of Adonis, but I chose to reward a player who has lifted his team to new heights.

The Knicks were slapped around last season by the Heat in the first round, swept by the Celtics the year before, and the constant has been Anthony. Stoudemire, an All-Star-caliber player when healthy, has been dealing with knee problems the past few years. Chandler is a defensive center, and Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, and Rasheed Wallace are beyond aging. That leaves the scoring load to Anthony and the mercurial Smith.

The perception that I knew the other 120 voters cast their first-place votes for LeBron and that I went against the grain as some kind of statement is inaccurate. I have covered the league for years, watched Jordan lose the 1996-97 MVP to Karl Malone, and understand that for one season, certain players just elevate their games. I thought Anthony was the most valuable player to his team this season, not the best player in the league.

And the fact that Anthony is struggling in the playoffs, three weeks after I cast my vote, is a serious case of Wednesday morning quarterbacking. Anthony scored 50 points at Miami April 2 and averaged 36.9 points in April when the Knicks were trying to lock down the Atlantic Division and the No. 2 seed.

LeBron had a marvelous season and should be the first player to win seven MVP awards, but this season I felt Anthony meant more to his team. It obviously was not a popular vote but it was my right to vote that way.

I definitely understand those who believe LeBron should have won unanimously but it’s no easy task making the Knicks relevant again and I think Anthony deserved my kudos for this season.

Stars need help. Melo is playing with castaways.

Melo and JR's supporting cast shot .553 from the field yesterday. That's not good enough?!

Papabear Says

But they 65% shooting to the Pacers. So what does shooting 55% mean. Or do you expect Melo to guard 5 players.

huh? Who is shooting 65%?

Papabear we werent discussing gratitude in this thread, just basketball. The basketball question of the day is how do you build a contender around an offensive centerpiece with such a low shooting %? Can it be done? Ungrateful minds want to know!

I would say felton has been a bigger reason why the knicks made the second round, along with boston just being on a steep decline..

ungrateful? yea we should be on our knees thanking our god he blessed us with stripping our team of every future asset so we can watch carmelo shoot 31% from the field and whine about his shoulder....

And JR smith? rofl... please to even consider this guy a blessing is ridiculous...

ungrateful? really?

Melo does not have a great supporting cast

really? well your boy disagrees with you.. he said this is the best team he has been on!!

This team sinks or swims with Melo.

papa bear, you identified your problem( in my Boss hog voice from Dukes of hazard)

when you sink or swim with a guy who is a career playoff under achiever, and volume shooting brick mason, most of the time you are going to SINK..

And you have the nerve to call fans ungrateful? really?

Get real we don't have the pieces to beat the Pacers they are too big and too strong.

really? but they don't have a STAR right? I thought all you needed was a star? hmmm

which is why some of ungrateful fans have no sympathy... carmelo made this bed.. he didn't want to wait, he wanted his money pronto... ok, he got it.. now stop shooting bricks and play some damn defense!!

Well, we will see how it pans out. Melo AND JR need to shoot better but FG% is greatly over-emphasized on this board. There is more at play here than FG%. I wish you guys would stop this.

And this is why I find this thread and the calls to fire Woodson absurd.

stop what? Melo takes a massive amount of shots and misses a massive amount of shots.

Nupe... how about you just answer the question. Can you build a contender around a guy who takes 25+ shots a game and shoots 41%?

FG% isnt some magic #, like if Melo shoots 45% he's OK. This guy is a volume shooter who goes very cold for extended periods of time. Those periods of time costs his team wins. Melo has a worst winning % in the playoffs of any active player. Despite Amare, this was the year right? Best supporting cast he's ever had (Melo's words). His coach. Melo was in the MVP discussion.. so lets discuss.
