Nuggets record is right next to us, while their team has many of assets, picks, young players, and will continue to get better
While Knick's have a small window to compete with many players on their last legs on the way to retirement
However, it all comes down to 2015 FA, if we can retool with the right players in that FA class, along with making 2 good drafts with it with our 1st round picks
Whether we continue to add "ALL STARS" like Love/Aldridge/Lebron *all could be UFA vs RFA*/Irving *unlikely*,
lesser extent of Rudy Gay *has great potential but having a poor season on STATS this year* I think Gay's athleticism/skills are right after Durant/Lebron
Another F would be Chandler Parsons *RFA though so unlikely with Irving*
Dragic/Lin/Rhondo/Tony Parker
Marc Gasol/Bosh/Boozer/Varajo/Hibbert
and
still need some cap friendly signings like Amir Johnson/Ed Davis/Osik/Glen Davis/Bledsoe
*KG at 10-12m per game, with Rasheed Wallace's role for the veteran minimum*
*Steve Nash at Kidd's role as mentor/leader*
They both maybe old but if we can sign them for veteran's minimum to about the 3m *MLE* type money, they bring much experience/leadership on and off the court
Tyson Chandler in his next contract will need changes if we keep him
Would like to keep him but have him play a smaller role by then to extend his career, limited minutes about 20, keeping him fresher, and still a leader on and off the court for DEFENSE
I think Tyson Chandler would be due for a big drop off by his next contract and is not worth $10m+ for multiple years
He is taking a beating on his body entire Knick career and has injury problems throughout his career
We never added a defender that compliments him like JJ did last year
While Rasheed Wallace/Camby were added, they are too slow to play the PF, to be the good help/weakside defender that JJ was for us
Most importantly is Melo's ability to opt out one year earlier before 2015 and if we give him a "MAX" extension, it would leave us with little flexibility to add talent and build a dynasty roster for many more years to come
That is the difference between "MAX for Melo, is like 20-25m+ per year" vs a "max deal for Harden at about 15m *13.7m-17.7m* per year
If Melo can take much less money, like 10m-15m for 1 year in 2015 with player options so he can opt out, in order to attract more quality FA, parlaying them, and forming our core with quality ALL STARS/STARS/Role players, it would be a HUGE difference in what players we can attract to NY
I have no problem with giving him a Joe Johnson like deal AFTER we are able to build a core/dynasty but NOT before it *especially if he opts out earlier* because it leaves us with little to NO flexibility to attract FA's in the 2015 FA pool
If we can pull a Miami/Lebron/The decision signing *ALL STARS* with each making a little less but making it back up in endorsements here in NY and the be the favorites to go after a ring
I would much rather have Rudy Gay at a much lower cost *15m or less* than to overpay for Melo at 20-25m per year
