It depends on what you mean by "part of the success." I think people are choosing the wrong comparison. If you ask, "Are we better off with a healthy Felton than with losing Felton, having no replacement, and forcing Kidd and Prig to play too many minutes," the answer is yes, but that's a bad question to ask because there are always other options. A better question is, "Is Felton better than what a GM should be capable of buying for 4 years, $18 mil?" He makes just slightly below the league average salary but he is way below average in scoring efficiency and does not compensate for that by being way above average in anything. Or perhaps you can ask, "Does Felton provide substantially more than a guard at a much lower salary?" I highly doubt it. How does he compare, for example, to Chris Duhon (2 yrs, $8 mil), Jason Terry (3 yrs, $15 mil), Keyon Dooling (1 yr, $1.3 mil), Louis Williams (3 yrs, $15 mil)? I'm sure there are many more examples - I just scanned the payrolls for a few teams. I think each of the guys above is a better bargain.
