why would you put those guys name in the same sentence..thats like comparing douglas to lin

I hope he becomes our Oakley, Mason, or LJ. Hope I'm wrong.

I always assumed Stoudemire would become an LJ-type in his later years. When the athletic abilities are declined he can be a leader and a guy who can come up big when it counts. He won't put up 20+ anymore, but can be just as efficient. Chandler is the Oakley of the team with his toughness and heart, JR Smith is the Starks with his love/hate streakiness and intensity, Melo is the Ewing as the superstar that carries the team, and Felton is like Harper, a PG that can just gets the job done. This team has a lot of comparison to the mid-to-late 90s Knicks.

What we really need is an Anthony Bonner type. Without that, it's first round exits for years to come.

On a side not, I don't think Felton and D Harper are comparable. Derek Harper had a lot of playoff experience, made a defensive second team and was a leader. Felton is an OK point guard, at best.

And our new Starks was allowed to walk away this off season. A guy who came out of nowhere and electrified the world and played with tons of heart and inspiration, but didn't fit Dolan's (Any many UltimateKnick posters) plans. JR Smith is a hipster who smokes gange and takes way too many shots.

I think Tyson is superior to Oakley and Amare is superior to LJ, if he rebounds from whatever got him down.

I don't care what people think. People are stupid. - Charles Barkley

This team has morphed into a retro version of a traditional NY Knicks tough defensive team. The roster is jam packed with players that have a TOUGH mentality and that is a great development when going up against a team like the Celtics or Heat. This team won't wilt like a delicate flower when playing the best teams in the league.

There are no kids on the team that haven't been thru some wars as even Shump has at least gone thru some tough situations and his dealing with a torn ACL counts as one of them. He'll be mentally toughened by the experience of rehabbing his knee. Also this team is returning a good amount of the core from last year.

Overall the team is bigger and deeper than last year and IMO that puts this team on an upper echelon in the league.
Don't focus so much on the age of some of the guys on the bench but rather the level of experience those players bring. Woody should be able to develop some really strong rotations with the mix of players he has and that will make everyone stronger and to remain fresher for the playoffs.

The other thing is that for the 1st time in years this team is all on the same page. Everyone fits the style. Most of the players are capable of playing halfcourt style BB. The PG's we have are well suited to that and that can help guys who haven't been most successful in a halfcourt. So now from the Coach thru to the last man on the roster everyone is on the same page.

Let's remember this team won with DEFENSE to close the season. That is the identity of this team now. Camby, Kidd, Felton and KT are all smart defensive players. They're all tough minded and won't back down from a challenge. Who knows what the offense will be like, but with this level of D this team should be able to win games even with a pedestrian offense. That's old school Knicks and this team has the best chance to go deep in the playoffs in more than a decade.

Let's try to embrace the return of Old School Knicks BB.

Glen is putting the finishing touches on his old school masterpiece. Adding Brewer was a good addition to this roster. We needed more range and length on the perimeter defensively. This team may not be fast or pretty but it will be a tough and grizzled vet team ready to bang with the best. We can put size and quickness on the perimeter now and that should really help to slow down teams with good wings. We want teams taking contested long jumpers and you have to have wing defenders to do that.

This whole roster was designed to combat the Heat in my eyes. Whether, we're successful or not remains to be seen. Each Knicks-Heat contest will be epic that's for sure.

I think this team is better suited to battle the Heat this time. We have more size and length and quality depth. I think we'll be less prone to TO's than before with PG's that take care of the ball and are savvy. We're much more prepared to play halfcourt and slow it down against the Heat, which they don't want to play. The Heat want to run and with this roster we can slow it down and still be effective.

If you want to attack the Heat you need some size and PG's that can make pinpoint passes inside, over the top of the defense and out to the wings. You have to be able to feed the post and I think We'll be able to do that with Kidd and Priggy. I wish we had more 3pt shooting, but it's hard to get players with the little bit of money we have left. I'll take what we have now over what we had last year in a heartbeat.

I'm bumping my own thread due to the fact that we have seen some evidence of STAT's work with Hakeem and it really underscores my feeling that this team is going to be much more like an old school version of the Knicks this year. They say Tyson and possibly even Melo may work with Hakeem too. Whatever the case this team changes a lot with more serious post play. It's the one area that is weakest in the NBA when you think about it. We have the size we just needed for them to actually be able operate in the post too and not just on PnR plays.

When you put together the addition of Kidd to the roster it all should work pretty well since he's such a good post feeder. It all depends on just how successfully STAT and Tyson can learn how to post effectively. No way to know but i'm hopeful. I'm very confident in STAT since I've at least seen him do it before. The few times i've seen Tyson post it was a bit rough but with work he should be able to improve. Can't wait to see this group play together.

Imagine if Knicks are worst off next season than they were this past season and Lin's Rockets were successful. I want to know if Dolan is sleeping well these days thinking about such scenarios.

Even the 69 Mets can win The World Series.

Dennis Green to Syniko: "The Houston Rockets are what we thought they were. They're what we thought they were. Lin played for US last season — who the hell gives 25 million dollars to dude after 25 games of the regular season like it's equivalent to three full seasons and delivering against elite matchups (like Miami) the playoffs? Bull****! Jeremy Lin played 25 regular season games — he averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists — Jeremy Lin is who we thought he was! That's why Grunwald sobered up took damn Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd. Now if you want to crown The Houston Rockets, then crown their ass! But they are who we thought they were! And we let Lin off the hook!...

(... because the expectation in New York City is sky high and if your name is Patrick Ewing the back page headline is GOOD RIDDANCE if you do not deliver a championship ring)"

It hurts to just let Lin go for nothing. I still felt that it would be better to re-sign the kid and make a deal if some other team wanted him, but that didn't happen. The important thing is we did replace him with a competent starting PG who should fit what we're looking to do. Also we have more quality depth than we did last year at every position. It just doesn't make sense to worry about losing Lin at this point.

When you really think about it, the direction Woody wanted to go in is a better fit for the teams best player. If you're gonna bet the farm on a player and coach, then you should do everything to give them the best chance to succeed. Which we didn't do with the last coach. This time they have a chance to get it right and Glen has brought in players that fit exactly what Woody wants to do. Glen and Woody have a long time relationship and no doubt a similar philosophy on BB. For the 1st time in a long time we have a front office that is in sync with each other and a team on the floor that is a reflection of their vision. For better or worse that's the way it should be done.

Yes, imagine Melo coming to camp 50 lbs overweight riding a jazzie
Imagine Tyson breaking his foot getting off a plane.
STAT deciding to break his contract to play in Israel.
Felton going to a carb rehab halfway house...

Then imagine Dolan sleeping...holding his Eric Clapton doll...dreaming about the next sale at Guitar Warehouse...and how to get Glen to report to IT and have Woody run the offensive sets through IT...and wondering when he'll be able to start selling PSL's...

Despite those two lonely banners up there, MSG still sells out games no matter what. Little Jimmy ain't losing any sleep.

This franchise has a tradition it can be proud of. Sure we haven't actually WON a title in a long time, but it's not like they haven't been to the finals since that last title. Now this year will be a tough challenge, but this team is IMO right at the top in terms of winning talent. Very few teams are as deep as the Knicks. We should be able to stay fresh for a long 82 game season.

Most of all is the defensive strength this team should have. If Woody can crack the whip and keep Melo and STAT playing at a high level on D the rest of the team should be no problem at all keeping motivated. I think many of the vets we brought in realize this is a good chance to go for a ring. I think most of our players will be hungry and give it their all this year.

Felton, Kidd, Camby and KT all have that old school defensive and tough guy mentality. None of these guys will allow another team to punk them. That will permeate thru the roster and solidify the personality of the team as a tough defensive team.

I agree with the sentiment. Furthermore, this is the first time in quite a while where everyone involved with the franchise is moving consistently in the same direction.
FIX THE KNICKS / AND MAKE THEM SHINE / GET ’EM TO WIN LIKE ITS ’69 / HITTIN’ ALL THEIR FREE THROWS / AND NO MORE SHOOTING BRICKS / TIME TO GET IT RIGHT / AND FIX THE KNICKS

EXACTLY!!! Great point. You win with a singular vision and execution. You can't be pulling in different directions. There isn't any one way to win. You can win with this kind of team if everyone buys in to their role and they work together as a unit.

This team is built to stifle teams and make them work hard for points. We won't be running around like the Heat but rather staying at home and shutting down penetration. Protecting the basket and playing ball control. We've got to slow teams down and make they use clock. No quick and easy scores off our own Turnovers. Play efficient offense and stingy D.

I pretty much envisioned this as the way the Knicks would play this year and its a beautiful thing to see! That's why I changed my signature to "Shut'em Down" before the season. There was so much being made about the Lin stuff and the old players, but you really had to look past that and see how the team was being constructed. It's clearly a team that is built to play Old School Smart Defensive BB. If you take care of the ball and play efficiently on offense and back that up with an intense defense then you should see results.

This team is a joy to watch after years of turmoil and teams not playing up to their abilities. You can see the maturity of the vets and how it rubs off on everyone on the team. Even our young guys are playing smarter.

it's nice to see the knicks put something together to start the season. it looks like anthony might be starting to get it in terms of conditioning and defensive effort and hustle plays. he still holds the ball a bit too much and doesn't recognize the double team quite enough but watching game film with his coaches should help that a bit. in the meantime it is annoying. one thing i will add is that d'antoni is right that the ball has energy-- when it gets moved around properly it improves the shot selection, especially 3 point attempts. looks like woodson is insisting on that, but you could see today at certain points in the second half the knicks kind of forgot that a bit.

i wouldn't hang my hat on the vets too much, since the odds are against old players that they can remain healthy. but then again there's no denying that the older guys bring a certain savvy and calm that trickles down to younger knuckleheads.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

The beauty of MDA's offense is that it elevates lesser players. Woody has melded his offense with MDA's and it looks good so far. Not perfect, but this early in the season I wouldn't expect it to be perfect. The more they play the sharper it should get. They just need to play efficiently and keep moving and moving the ball and there's no way teams will be able to stop the Knicks completely.

As for the older players, I really am not worried cuz this team is so DEEP. We will have so many players capable of contributing that no ones minutes should be too high. That's how we're gonna preserve the vets for the playoffs. Plus the vets don't waste energy trying to make spectacular plays. They just keep it simple. Kidd saves most of his energy for defense. Our vets are smart and they know how to conserve energy and pace themselves. Plus did you notice how we kept the pace slower and in the halfcourt? That's how this team will win.

I think Mister Earl responded to this sentiment brilliantly in another thread.

Factorial
nixluva - I wasn't so sure that Woody would have the answers on offense, but he was smart enough to adopt some of MDA's stuff and when we can get some more post ups mixed in with STAT and Sheed that should also help.

Let's FINALLY set the record straight

Woodson played four years for Knight and worked with Larry Brown for years. Woodson's first pro coach was Red Holzman. Knight and Woodson talk frequently.

“I had dinner with (Bobby Knight) just this last week in New York. “We sat and chatted for about three hours. We talked basketball. What better advice to take? He’s done everything you could possibly do in basketball, and done it as good as anybody who has ever coached the game. How do you not respect Bob Knight?” - Mike Woodson, after practice last week

Mike Woodson worked with Mike D'Antoni for four months.

For all his madness and kaleidoscopically inventive profanity, Knight is one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. The hallmarks of his style—the motion offense, man-to-man defense, focus on the fundamentals, devotion to discipline—have spread throughout basketball for the past five decades at every level. It’s impossible to imagine the sport without him. And there may be no more devoted acolyte to Knight, his style of basketball, his view of the world—all the good things, without the chair-throwing—than Mike Woodson - Will Leitch, NYMagazine

Woodson draws TONS more from years with Holzman, Brown and Bobby Knight than the nanosecond he sat beside Mike D'Antoni.

Enough

I think it's clear from Woody's own words that he has borrowed a lot of what he learned from MDA from a very specific X's and O's nature. He may have played under Knight, Brown and Holzman, but he clearly has picked up the offensive concepts of MDA in the time he spent with 1st hand knowledge of the playbook. Woody wasn't known for his offensive creativity and they made jokes about how simple his offense was. If i'm going to give credit to someone for his sudden shift to a style predicated on spreading the floor and ball movement that would be MDA. There's no shame in admitting he picked up some things from one of the greatest offensive coaches in the Game. People can hate on MDA but he's pretty much solidified his standing as an offensive coach. How many coaches have adopted his schemes? Other great coaches acknowledge MDA's offensive mind. There's a reason he's been on the Olympic team.

Anyway the real important thing is that the team is mixing it up. Ball movement, player movement and a little ISO and Post play. That's a great job by Woody. This is an offense that can be effective in the playoffs.
