Knicks 'unhappy' about new Rockets offer sheet to Lin

LAS VEGAS -- Jeremy Lin has signed a revamped Rockets offer sheet for three years and $25 million, according to a league source. All $25 million is guaranteed.

With the previous offer sheet Lin was to be guaranteed $18.5M of a four-year, $28.8M offer sheet. There is no fourth year on this deal.

The Knicks expect to receive the offer sheet soon and have 72 hours to match.

A league source said the Knicks were "unhappy'' at the change in the terms, but Houston was in its right because Lin wasn't able to sign the documents until July 11. A source said the Rockets were desperate because they've lost all their point guards and wanted to make it harder on the the Knicks.

The Knicks were originally expected to get the offer sheet two days ago but the Rockets dragged their feet amid reports the Knicks were planning to match it.

In this new deal, Lin will make $5M the first year, $5.2M in year two and the maximum $15M in year three.

In previous offer sheet Lin was to make $9.3 million in the third year. Sources said Lin was unhappy the third year was so low and his camp tried to get Houston to increase it.

The Knicks have played hardball with Lin, making him go out and seek an offer. It cost him a chance to practice with the U.S. Select Team as he withdrew July 5th to visit Houston.

Mike Woodson said this morning he hopes Lin will stop by the Knicks summer league practices to work out in the next week. Woodson said it was unfortunate he "decided not to play'' in the Select Team but understood it was because he didn't want "to get hurt'' before his contract was official.

I really hate media (ironically work on it). This is obviously to spin the story the most controversial way.

Still, if the story on Lin's camp is truth then I don't like Lin's and his team's attitude at all. Yes, you will argue that NY made a lot of money with Linsanity, but does that warrant Lin suddenly believing he is such a star that deserves max money for a little more than 30 good games?

Give me a break!

And for all the "good faith" the Knicks had with Lin in letting him test the market, it ended up biting their behinds in a huge way. Fudge it next time! Offer him a contract and move on if he won't accept it.

Bah!

I think we had a lockout because the owners are greedy. Can't say that I am surprised they are greedy. Seems like most wealthy people only care about getting wealthier.

Is this just big market vs. big market cannibalism? Houston is the 5th biggest metro area in the US. I had to look that up, because my NYC chauvinism thought of them as mid-market. But yea, this is some bush league stuff right here.

I must be the only one that thinks this is a good deal.

If Lin lives up to the hype, 5 mil for 2 years is a steal. If he doesn't pan our, its ok cuz its only 5 mil a year.

That 3rd year is no big deal because now that becomes an expiring contract and can be moved for another starphuck.

Question: could this have happened (Houston changing the offer) if we had matched the deal already? Or would it be done?

houston never officially signed lin. word just leaked that they'd agreed to terms. they couldn't sign the offer sheet until the moratorium was offer.

any offer sheet that's signed is binding.

supposedly Lin was delayed by the ESPYs or some such and couldn't meet with houston until they resolved some cap issues. like amnestying scola for one, i guess.

The extra $6 mil is not a big deal in Year 3 (except perhaps to Dolan paying more in Luxury Taxes). As mentioned, if Lin pans out ....he is a bargain in the first two years. If he doesn't, he'll be shipped out during or after year 3.....when Tyson, Amare & Kidd expire.

At this point I would sign Fields as well....going to be so far over the cap anyway.

Exactly.

Where is is mentioned in the new CBA that this crap is even allowed to happen?

If teams can up the ante on their offer sheets, then why not save the paper and let the teams just bid the old fashioned way? It's like the initial offer sheet means nothing if the teams that present them can keep spitting out new drafts when the team that the player was already on agrees to the first one.

Dolan and the Knicks should complain to Stern about this.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Lin never signed an offer sheet until today. Though I agree it's dirty pool by Houston, especially since they know the knicks will match.

If reports are true, looks like Lin wants to leave...We should have worked a Lin for Lowery trade before it came to this...

This changes a lot. It's clear that Dolan's pockets are pretty deep and if it were just the money I doubt management would think twice about matching the contract. But with the other restrictions...it makes sense they would take their time to think it through.

I'm surprised Lin's agreed to the offer...but then again it's a business...so I'm not.
The other possibility is maybe he doesn't want us to match...it's not as though he's been vocal about staying in NY. It's all speculation and we'll just have to see how it plays out.

I like Lin but I hope he realizes that once he signed this contract... he's no longer going to get a pass for essentially being a sophomore player and still learning after only playing 25 meaningful games in his career and ending the year with an injury. At least you can say Amare and Melo are proven talents and have earned the rights to their large contracts. Lin going to have to earn his paycheck and live up to the potential he's getting paid for. He better freakin play up to the 25mil + Lux tax + restrictions that may be put on the team. And Lin will hear it big time from the fans if he doesn't live up to it. LOL...I think it's safe to say he's only seen the sunny side of NY so far.

I hope he does live up to his potential, and I hope he's a Knick when he does it.

On another note if Jorts is still available in 90 days and we have an open spot...are we allowed to sign him?

I also don't think HO! gets a cap hit in the 3rd year of 15M. I believe it's the average of the deal so 8M per year against their cap.

It seems like Lin's team may have asked for the third year to be higher so the Knicks will have difficulty matching it, which is cool...Get what u can I guess, but it handicaps the Knicks going forward...He jsut isn't worth it, we aren't talking about Chris Paul here...

Papabear Says

All I can say now is that Lin better be the real deal or he will hear it from the fans. And if he ain't the real deal we make him sit the second year until he is so frustrated that he would want a buy out for maybe half of the third year.

Completely agree. No more sugar coating his situation. We match and he better bring it. You sign such a contract, you better be ready for the heaven and hell it will provide. Linsanity was everybody's darling because of the great and uplifting story. Not anymore. You should deliver now consistently, Lin.
