If he's in the rotation, he's an asset.

If he's horribly overpaid, to me he's Shandon Anderson. Contributes to the team being over the cap for years to come. I don't like it. Fields regressed. Never showed anything in the playoffs. Never developed any offensive moves. No way is he worth $20M. And I love his hustle. But his defense needs work and his offense needs a LOT of work. He's not a $20M player.

Not this year, but after year 2, the penalties get much worse, as I recall. We really can't stay hovered over $74 million every year. The new CBA isn't a hard cap, but it's about as close as you can get to a hard cap without actually having one. You can't afford to pay that kind of money unless it's for a starter with the current CBA.

also - but not matching, we have the full mle to use now.

Not necessarily...actually a very slim chance if you plan on signing Lin.

Worse...but not so bad. http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q23

Right. No bi-annual, no mid-level, can't increase salary at all in trade, no sign and trades, no Gilbert Arenas provision. In other words, you lose most avenues to improve your team. Your avenues to improve team are mini-mid level, veteran min contracts and trades where you reduce salary. In other words, 90% of the chances to improve team are gone. Not to mention the team is paying a higher percentage of luxury tax than in the previous CBA. That's pretty close to a hard cap. No flexibility. Do you give this up for Landry Fields? I don't.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I agree, he's not a worth the 7M average, but the Knicks are going to be over the cap for years to come with or without his salary.

Do you sign Lin then? Because by signing him you are probably already in that situation you described. That's why I think you match Fields, because either way you are going to be over the cap threshold.

Good! RT @Chris_Broussard: Cleveland, New York have shown interest in Raptors' restricted free agent Sonny Weems, sources say.

So we're going to replace Landry Fields with....Landry Fields?

Yeah, but there's a difference between one or two contracts away from being under the cap and being like 8 contracts away from being under the cap.

I dunno. If you think Fields is a KEY part of the next three year run with Melo Tyson and Amar'e... I guess you think about signing him.

I just don't buy that he is.

I remember entire second halfs where Woodson ddidn't play him and Novak and Smith played instead.

Speaking of which, Novak and Smith have to be furious right now. Or at least Smith.

Toronto just destroyed the FA market for EVERY SINGLE TEAM.

Players and agents are now like... if Landry Fields is worth $7M.... shouldn't I be getting $12M or $15M or $20M.

Lotta teams probably pissed at Toronto right now.

What are we going to offer him? The minimum? You think Toronto matches that?

Is Weems restricted? I've seen him listed as unrestricted, i think.

http://hoopshype.com/free_agency.htm

anyway, i agree that Weems is essentially Fields. more athletic, probably a better defneder, has more of a mean streak. just as bad a shooter. probably better at driving with the ball. a little shorter than fields, but not much.

I hope we are on the phone trying to make this sign and trade happen with phx before 7/11 so we can stick it right back to Toronto.

Why would Fields sign for less with Phoenix? To help us? Fields is getting paid by the Raptors. He'll follow the money. There's no loyalty to the Knicks.
