# Over 2 hour practices?! (Love it!! Hardwork)
# Set plays?! (This is the biggest thing. Freelancing leads to indecisiveness whihc in-turn leads to turnovers)
# Holding players accountable (Miss an assignment, there's a chance you will be riding pine. This is all we've been calling for all year.)

Love the what I'm hearing, now lets see it in action...

Can Woodson revitalize Toney Douglas in defense? Is there enough time?

fishmike wrote:one thing about this thread... Woodson has nothing to lose? NBA coaching jobs dont come easy, especially for middle of the road types like Woodson. I would say from a career standpoint he's got tremendous pressure to make this opportunity work

To take over a team mid-season - in a compressed lockout season - changes everything. Woodson understands the opportunity completely. He has Knicks pedigree and understands the politic of 2 Penn PLaza. He faced down the press honestly band directly. His post game interview lends a clue towards how he will deal with the roster behind closed doors.

Whatever expectations are inherited and artificial. The season restarts tomorrow. There is NO pressure. Only performance.

Woodson will not allow bullsh#t or half-hearted effort. It's a Bobby Knight thing.

I have no problem with that.

Misterearl, were you pro/against the firing? Or an agnostic?

You sound pretty happy and positive in regards to the new regime and accountability.

The Answer Man Never Lost A Game, The Clock Just Ran Out On Him

yellowboy90 wrote:Q. Is there enough time?

A. Absolutely. One two-hour practice is long enough to determine who wants it. One more thing, please don't break out those hideous green unis for St Patricks Day. We are not the freakin' Boston Celtics.

yellowboy90 wrote:Can Woodson revitalize Toney Douglas in defense?

A. For Toney to take someone else's minutes, he will need to leapfrog Shumpert, JR Smith and Fields.

Let's not get too crazy.

Surprised he did not even get garbage minutes last night. I was sure it was because they had him traded.

The Answer Man Never Plays Favorites, Most Of The Time

A. I'm for anything that lights a bonfire under the collective butt of this group. We had Linsanity. Bring on Woodmanity.

The Answer Man is not Answering I am sure you had/have a specific opinion on this. You want a [butt] fire lit, so is this the way you wanted it ignited?

And for the truculent interview? My favorite sports interview of all time! Timeless moment.

I don't think TD was available last night for personal reasons. Did anyone see him on the bench?

TD would work in a Triangle style offense much like Fisher. He just isn't a good decision maker with the ball.

During his last two seasons in Atlanta, Mike Woodson had the task of managing a petulant Josh Smith. Smith wanted to play his way and Woodson wanted more discipline. Smith loved to hoist three point shots and gave inconsistent effort on defense. Smith's playing personality led to several public confrontations where Woodson got in Smith's face. Josh Smith took it very personally.

He did his best with a flawed roster that featured three redundant forwards. Like D'Antoni, Woodson was the one who had to go.

Fast forward to the deepest roster (in his words) Woodson has ever coached. He KNOWS he holds minutes as precious commodities and will enforce the prime directive.

You Suck. You Sit.

The fact Woodson emphasizes holding players accountable is music to my ears as well.

Woodson's plight is worse than MDAs. MDA was lame duck trying to reign in a player known for being uncoachable. Woodson is an INTERIM lame duck. Don't hold your breath Earl. IF h benches Melo, Dolan will put him on rocket bound for the moon.

I don't think Dolan was seeking to replace D'Antoni this year. I also don't think he was trading Melo to try and shake things up again to see if he could get the right combination for him to be successful. I do think he was advised or wanted to build a more conventional team with a big frontline and he wanted the team to put more emphasis on defense so Woodson was brought in. I think its Woodson's team until the end of the season and he can do what suits him. I also don't think D'Antoni was ever going to bench Melo. Woodson might but my hope is that he communicates his expectations and his players execute them.

Dolan's team that he broke up last year was more conventional already!!! We had a young Center or is your hatred of MDA so big that you can't seem to remember? Dolan hampered his team by not giving MDA an ext. even if he only gave him a year it would've allowed the coach to at least not be a lame duck. In any event Dolan got what he wanted and we can only hope that it works.

I hated the Melo trade and was outspoken about it at the time. I also think it chased Walsh out the door. I don't hate D'Antoni but I do not like his coaching style or his approach to preparing his team for the season and for games. I think D'Antoni knew that he had to win with the team he was given or the Knicks would move on. Once Walsh left I believe the days of moving guys for Mike ended. You had to know that Dolan wanted Melo and if forced to choose would choose Melo over D'Antoni. Dolan had 4 years with D'Antoni. He knew who he was, and how he coached. It appears that he was going to move on after this season and bring someone else in but he said it was D'Antoni's decision to leave when he did. Dolan is stubbornly loyal to guys (Scott Layden, Isiah Thomas). I was surprised he kept D'Antoni after the Boston series and Walsh moving on.

Here's a Woody post-practice interview. I think I like him so far.

http://www.msg.com/videos/mike-woodson-post-practice-315-1.85585

edit: and something these players might respect about Coach Woodson - he's got a ring. as a top assistant with Larry Brown, but still, a ring is a ring. And it carries some extra gravitas.

Both Dolan and MDA knew this was MDAs last season here. MDA wanted to leave on his own terms, more power to him for that. Dolan may have been loyal to Isiah but that doesn't translate to everyone. He has never publicly stated his support for MDA. Like you said he would choose Melo over MDA (wrongly in MY opinion). I didn't hate the Melo trade I suppoted it, but also beleived we overpaid for him. I didn't anticipate that Melo and MDA would work so badly, I thought they would be able to make it work. I also thought MDA would have some leverage over the team but Dol*** made sure that he wouldn't.
