Most guys who get labelled as "combo guards" are really just players who don't fit either position well. If you define a combo guard as someone who has very good PG and SG skills and would be very good at either position, then only guys like Kobe and Wade qualify.

"We NEED a guard with high IQ, excellent court vision and a pass first mindset."

Does Chancey Billups qualify based on your criteria?

Do you agree that different offensive systems have either a greater or a lesser requirement for a pure point guard? A system that embraces a point forward like Melo, might be less dependent on having a pure point guard. Do you agree?

Uh! I have already said twice on this thread I had no issues with Billips running the point. I never asked for pure point guard, I was trying to dispel the notion of a combo guard being the answer to our prayers. I don't honestly know what combo guard is and if read oter posts here you will see opinion is divided.

I am not buying into Melo as point forward yet, maybe when I see him execute I will change my mind. Till such time that happens our need in my opinion is still solid ball distribution skills with excellent court vision and high IQ.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Think DWade Somebody who can do it all. Rose also. Chauncey. Sam Cassell. Bryant.

Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

I think my definition of what kind of combo guard Iman can be is of the better variety. He's a SG that has PG quickness, handle and enough passing ability to be competent. I think that is what he'll be as opposed to TD who is a SG in a PG body.

Good for him then, we still need someone to run he offense. We need a 3rd PG in the worst way and as much as I would love to see Iman develop he can't buy an assist out there right now. And he is out for two weeks anyway, I did like what I saw from him today. You can't get into a more high pressure season opener than this, everyone was saying how this felt like the playoffs in the 4th qtr.

The writer is a guy named Chancey Billips on last friday I think. I think it helps illustrate why Iman might help the Knicks more at point guard than at shooting guard.

"And I never liked playing [shooting guard], to be honest with you, because the one advantage that I always had was I was bigger and stronger than anyone at [point guard]. “Now I slide down and I’m smaller than everyone at my position. What are we going to do to even that out?"

So he diligently refined his point guard skills for a couple of years, until he was finally good enough at distributing to become a winning point guard.
