Stern’s NBA career is winding down and this will wind up being far more than a footnote on his legacy, given the many, many implications of his handling of the trade as overseer of the league-owned Hornets. The conflict of interest is too great and the harm done to the losers, as laid above, is irreversible. Everyone’s glad this sage is over but the ill effects will be felt for years.

Wojo actually speculated that the league offices made sure that the Clips got Billups to help facilitate the trade. I am not a conspiracy theorist but when the Commish vetoes a trade that makes all teams better I think you have to question it. When Gilbert's email was made public you have to question it. I think a group of owners were not ready to end the lockout and Stern forced them to get a deal done by Christmas. I think some of those guys were really pissed when they heard Paul was going to the Lakers. I don't think it will soon be forgotten that Stern interferred in this.

I'm sorry but, that trade did not make all three teams better. Houston was clearly worse after the trade. LA might have improved but I believe they were actually worse. And New Orleans was probably about the same or a little worse; a team that wins less than 50 games and gets bounced in the first round of the playoffs.

Daryl Morey said that Stern's vetoing that trade set the Rockets back years. They were getting Gasol. 19 and 10 with almost 2 blocks a game from an incredible low post player is nothing to sneeze at. The Rocket organization was PISSED that the trade didn't go through.

He can claim whatever he wants but, http://espn.go.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/hou/houston-rockets take a look at that depth chart. If you subtract Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Goran Dragic and all you're adding is Pau Gasol,, where does that get you? They won 43 games last year, does that trade demonstrably improve on that? At best they're a 7/8 seed and get bounced in the first round. That's an improvement in name only.

Morey made it clear he literally had been advised by legal counsel but would not specify why he had discussions with an attorney.

"I just can’t comment on that," he said.

He also would not answer when specifically asked if the team is considering legal action.

But the Rockets are not "planning" to sue the NBA over the issue, according to a person with knowledge of their thinking.

Clearly, however, a week after the Rockets agreed to a trade that would have sent Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and Goran Dragic to New Orleans to acquire Gasol, Morey had feelings so strong he sought legal advice before he would share them.

With the deal, the Rockets were confident they would also sign Nene and would have then been willing to offer Chuck Hayes a contract competitive with the four-year, $20 million offer he accepted in Sacramento.

I think my point was that the Rockets really wanted Gasol and thought he made them a better team. That team has had Yao forever so having a dominant post player makes sense. Moray also thought that what STern did was so unethical that he sought the advice of legal counsel.
