no, yeah, you're right, it's really the poor billionaire owners.

There is no reason to feel sorry anybody involved.

Saying you feel sorry for players who are millionaires and will sit around in their mansions most of the year watching TV and throwing parties is kind of lame.

the players are negotiating in good faith and have already given up 4pts on what they earned last year, despite the league having it's most profitable year ever. saying there are no bad guys belies a misunderstanding of the situation. there are certainly bad guys. their names are adam silver, dan gilbert, sarver, etc.

let me ask you this - the denver owner, kronke (billionarie), is said to be one of the hardline owners in this deal. why did SEVEN denver nuggets sign overseas deals? three of whom - good nba players, mind - wilson chandler, kenyon martin, jr smith - can't opt out. why did SEVEN nuggets sign overseas? my guess is they knew the owners had no intention to deal fairly and were dead set on a season-long lockout.

4 points? As opposed to what? An awful agreement agreed to by owners that was signed pre-recession? The NBA's CBA deal was the worst in sports for owners. It didn't make much sense to continue with that after losing money for the past few years. The owners 50-50 is fine by me. The NFLPA agreed to the same thing and their sport brings in tons more money than the NBA. I don't see a problem. We're in a recession. If teams are bleeding money then how exactly do you expect the league to operate? Money eventually disappears. These teams do not have vaults of unlimited cash sitting there. the bottom feeders of the league need help or they need contraction. They're not going to be contracted so they will be helped.

Do I agree with the measures taken by both sides to do this? No. Do I take pity in the players "woe is us" act? No. Do I still think David Stern sucks? Yes. But not more than Derek Fisher and Billy Hunter. Incompetence at its' finest.

The money stats relayed by the league are BS. They refuse to open their books. The "losses" they are reporting are thru shady tax laws that allow them to count the purchase of their teams as losses for 5yrs after they buy them. There are a lot of new owners and NBA teams are selling for record amounts. if the league is unprofitable, why did the Warriors franchise just sell for nearly $500 Million??? not to mention that side businesses like Dan Gilbert's casino that is literally physically connected to the Cavs publicly funded arena, don't count towards BRI or the Cavs bottom line. so, yeah, i think the owners are full of sh!t.

let's put it this way - the NFL just went through a record lockout for them. the owners for the NFL negotiated for 16 straight days. why is the most NBA owners can handle 3 days?

also, they're modeling their deal after the NHL. want to guess what percentage of revenue the players got in the NHL last year? 57%.

I could be wrong but I believe if the NBAPA decertifies individual law suits by players would force the owners to open up their books. The players risk and give up a lot if they decertify but Hunter did mention this as an option.

What are you talking about? Refuse to open their books? That would put them in violation of labor negotiation and almost assuredly lift the lockout in court. There is no 'refusing' here. The owners laid it out pretty easy for them and there was articles about how they sent official copies to union accountants to look over. The Union recognizes they are losing money, hence the drop to 53 in the first place. This is no farce. To say the NBA is magically making up losses is unfounded.

if the owners don't move, i think they'll do it.

but have no illusions. that means the whole season is gone. and maybe part of the next one.

and, really, do gilbert (lost lebron), sarver (lost amar'e, nash old), kroenke (lost melo, half his team in china with no opt out) and some of the rest care? no. no they don't give a sh!t.

the players association can cave for a decent deal or they can sacrifice a **** load for what they think is right. as a fan who just wants basketball, i just want to see games. but as someone who is sick of the BS we have to swallow everyday, i support the players for standing up against the owners blatant lies.

the owners say it's about competitive balance one day and the next its all about BRI.

let me ask you this, how can a league with 10 superstars be competitively balanced over 30 teams? it's not possible. next question.

Here is the entire quote from Kessler:
Something happened in that board of governors meeting,” Kessler said. “Yesterday we thought we were moving toward a deal. Suddenly, today, they spend very little time negotiating. As soon as we got in there and presented our offer and without caucusing, they said, ‘We don’t have to do anything else. We can tell you right now we’re at 50 percent, and it has to be our way.’

“We adjourned, we came back with the players. They said, ‘We will not agree to anything else unless you agree to 50 percent. I couldn’t believe it.

“We were told Paul Allen was there to express the views of the board of governors, and that view was ‘our way or the highway.’

“They were carrying out a mandate they were given. This is a sad day for fans, because someone in that board of governors was sent to blow us off, blow the fans off.”

i'm telling you stern was forced out of negotiations today. if that story doesn't come out, i'd be shocked. the hawk owners took control of this whole process today, which means we are screwed. no season.

"Labor negotiation." what a farce. name the last time the NLRB sided with the unions it supposedly represents. the idea that any NBA team's books represents the reality of their financial situation is another farce. the fact that this country's tax laws are ludicrously tilted towards any corporation trying to lie is beside the fact. where is the lakers $3 billion tv contract? what about the extra money owners take in from holding concerts and other profitable events in publicly funded arenas? what about the casino dan gilbert opened up and attached via walkway to the cavs arena? are those on the books as BRI? no. farce farce farce. lies lies lies. supporting the owners in this is like trying to defend banks who sold mortgages they knew would default to people and stood to profit by their loss. seriously, aren't you sick of rich people looking you in the eye and lying through their teeth? occupy nba arenas that your tax dollars paid for. oh, just kidding, you can't.

This came thru from Alex Kennedy:

AlexKennedyNBA: The NBPA isn't happy with Spurs' owner Peter Holt. Source says he's slowing talks and told the players, "You haven't felt enough pain yet."

That's just sad. Owners do in fact have revenue that isn't included in the BRI, which is likely why the players want a bit more than 50%. The Owners could easily have taken the huge give back in the split and allowed the players to get their 52.5%. The balance of what they're looking for could come from revenue sharing among owners.

Hahn asked Holt a question about the 04-05 NHL Labor dispute.

Ominous quote from Holt, off my question if, like NHL in 04-05, it's worth to the owners losing an entire season to achieve their goals:

That's just ridiculous. 1st of all the Players already conceded 4.5% back to the owners on the split. The final 2.5% the owners are holding up the season over could be made up for with revenue sharing. It's a $100 mil. The league is splitting 4 billion. The difference is the players want 52.5% of $4 bil, 2,100,000 verses $2,000,000 per season. This can't possibly be the real reason the league is holding up the season! Am I off somehow? What am I missing on the split of BRI?

It is beyond ridiculous. These owners aren't operating even remotely in the realms of reason. Stern absolutely got pushed out/ refused to take part yeasterday as he genuinely thought a deal was do-able (which suprised me- I thought he was prepared to lose a season) and got over ruled by those madcap owners- I suppose because he's smart and realises that losing a season not only destroys all the mementum the NBA was building, but will set it back for years and years. There is easily a doable deal on the table, but for some reason some of the owners just want to lose a whole season- they WANT to lose the season. it flies in the face of logic- the money they stand to make with a reasonable comprimise and a full season is going to be more than with no season and a declining nba- but for some reason it doesn't even seem to be about money anymore. Yep i get that the owners of the Cavs, Denver etc are bitter over losing their star players, and want revenge, but really, grow up! Whats the reasoning for the rest of the owners who are supporting the hardline?

This is so f***ing annoying! These owners are going to ruin the nba at the worst possible time.

Just out of interest does anyone know if owners can break a lockout and what would happen to them if they did? Say if Dolan, Cuban etc decided the other owners were insane and asking to much, could they open their arenas and set up games between themselves?

From what I've read it seems the pro-deal owners are:

Knicks,
mavs,
Heat
Lakers

Hardliners are:

Blazers (owner actually insane),
Cavs (Gilbert suffering from jilted lover syndrome),
Denver (jilted lover syndrome),
Suns (tight owner)
Spurs (thought he'd know better),
Celtics (a real shock- willing to screw over his teams last chance of a championship for...??? Are is the owner of Boston really asking for a system that will screw himself over as they're over the cap? Is he arguing for greater Parity?! Boston believes in greater parity?! Diagnosis: insane)

Where does everyone think the other owners fall into?

And finally, just to clarify, because this still seems like a headf***:

Owners are pretending to offer 50%, players willing to do 50-53% range (easy compromise), agreed on MLE, Rookie stuff, amnesty clause, disagreeing on luxury tax levels/ compensation- THAT'S a reason to lose a season and break off talks and lose a season?!

i'm telling you guys, stern was forced out yesterday.
ken berger with a note about stern being absent:

Union attorney Jeffrey Kessler speculated that owners in the Board of Governors meetings Wednesday night and earlier Thursday had forced this take-it-or-leave it negotiating strategy on Silver, Holt and the rest of the labor relations committee. I don't have time for conspiracy theories at a time like this, although Kessler made a compelling -- if incendiary -- case, even implying that the strategy was somehow related to Stern's absence.

"This meeting was hijacked," Kessler said. "Something happened in that Board of Governors meeting. We were making progress. They came back, they came without the commissioner. They came with Paul Allen. We were told Paul Allen was here to express the views of the other members of the Board of Governors. And that view was, 'Our way or the highway.' That's what we were told. We were shocked. We went in there trying to negotiate, and they came in and they said, 'You either accept 50-50, or we're done, and we won't discuss anything else.' "

Regardless of the future CBA, NBA business case to exist.
NBA is now officially a circus which runs to please 30-man group egos.
It was never about making substantial money directly but now it is really exposed.
Still there is a huge industry rolling around serving arenas and players and huge gambling ring...
Now see the pressure start mounting and we can see some ugly and uninspected developments.
