LOS ANGELES — After months of back-and-forth discussions, the Denver Nuggets appear ready to trade Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets, but Melo would first need to sign a contract extension.

And there's no indication he'll do that.

More likely is a trade to the New York Knicks, which has been Anthony's preferred destination all along and a team he would sign the extension to play for. The Nuggets and Knicks are in serious discussions to work out details of a potential blockbuster trade.

A league source said the Knicks have offered forward Danilo Gallinari, point guard Raymond Felton, forward Wilson Chandler and center Eddy Curry, plus a No. 1 draft choice to be acquired from another team, in exchange for Anthony, Chauncey Billups and fill-in players to make the salaries match. Curry, who is making $11.276 million, would be valued only for his expiring contract.

Yahoo.com first reported the parameters of the trade.

The Bergen Record, citing league sources, reported early today that the Nuggets and Nets have reached a tentative agreement on a trade, should the Nets get Anthony to sign an extension, which is unlikely.

Anthony said today he's hopeful his situation gets worked out soon but gave no indiction if he would sign the 3-year, $65 million extension to complete the megadeal with New Jersey.

Melo said early in the afternoon that no "legit" trade has been placed in front of him, but said he's been kept in the loop by the Nuggets' management and his agent, Leon Rose. He did not address any conversations he might have had with the Knicks, though the New York Daily News reported he met with Knicks' officials Thursday night.

Anthony said he knows of no meeting set up here during the All-Star weekend with New Jersey owner Mikhail Prokhorov.

If the latest proposed deal from the Nets goes through, which is unlikely, the Nuggets would receive rookie post player Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Ben Uzoh, Troy Murphy and four first-round draft picks. They would then try to move Murphy to another team. In addition to Anthony, the Nets would acquire Billups and a bevy of bench players from the Nuggets.

Anthony said he would like to have a firm idea of what his options are by the end of the weekend. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday.

"I haven't got no sleep in a week. I want to get it done. Before I leave here I would like to have something on the table. They could say to me, 'Melo this is what we have.' "

Nuggets officials were not returning calls for comment on the latest slate of trade developments.

The Nuggets have had a 3-year, $65 million extension offer on the table since last June. Anthony said he hasn't talked with the Nuggets since last fall about staying with the team, though he indicated just over a week ago he might sign the extension.

local stations are always the last to be clued in. Prob some overzealous intern who caught a post on RealGM about a twitter update from MarcSpearYahoo.

Fields still playing in this rookie/soph game...If something did just go down, this could be an indicator that he wasn't involved in the deal..Say a prayer.

Man hard not to be excited at the prospect of this deal going thru. Denver scares the crap out of me, but that offer they made is more than fair. The absurd Nets offer only makes it seem like our deal isn't good, but in reality it's a good one for how these Superstar trades usually go.

Man STAT and Melo is a heck of a lot of talent. It's gonna make it a bit easier to get vets to sign on here for MLE contracts IMO. We should be able to make some noise even this year. 29 games to get the guys a bit of Chemistry and then just let their natural talent take over in the playoffs. I can't wait for a formal announcement and the press conference.

You have to give up value to get value. I hate this trade a lot more if we substituted Fields for Chandler and had to start Sean Williams or Toney Douglas at SG.

This rook/soph game is actually a tight game --- 133-130 rookies on a Fields 3 just now..Under 4 mins to go and Fields still in there..

WOODMANnYk wrote:Frank Isola from daily News was on SNY live and reported Nuggets do not want Wilson Chandler because he becomes a restricted free agent after the season. They want Fields instead. They want Gallo, Fields ,Curry, 1st round pick and felton

He also said Dolan has taken over the duscussion on a possible trade instead of walsh and dantoni.

Walsh and Dantoni think it's a bit too much..

So of course the article that Daily News just posted is a little more nuanced that we Woodman relayed to us as to what Isola said on TV.

Is Dolan involved? Sure, he met with Melo. Typical, or at least not out of ordinary. Has he taken over discussions? Not mentioned at all in article, which is telling.

Does the title of the article at all match any of the details discussed in the article? Not at all. Is Dolan owner of Knicks and thereby have defacto over-riding or veto about any trade? Sure, but that has been there every day since he took ownership of team.

Carmelo Anthony trade now exclusively in the hands of Knicks owner James Dolan: sources

Carmelo Anthony's future is now in James Dolan's hands.

Dolan, the chairman of Madison Square Garden, could decide as early as Saturday whether to agree to a blockbuster deal with the Denver Nuggets or risk losing the All-Star forward to the Nets.

The Daily News has learned that Dolan met with Anthony and Josh Kroenke, the Nuggets' president and son of team owner Stan Kroenke, on Thursday in Los Angeles. The meeting took place after the Nuggets and Nets had tentatively agreed in principle to a deal that would require Anthony to sign a three-year, $65 million extension with New Jersey.

The Knicks, however, are Anthony's preferred destination, and he requested the face-to-face meeting with Dolan to get a sense of where the Knicks stood. The News reported on Tuesday that the Knicks felt the Nuggets' request for three starters, including Raymond Felton, plus a first-round pick and Eddy Curry's expiring contract was too steep.

The Knicks have been reluctant to part with both Danilo Gallinari and rookie Landry Fields, but late Friday Yahoo! Sports reported that the club had included Gallinari in its latest proposal.

A source close to the negotiations remained hopeful that a deal would be agreed upon but added that "both sides refuse to budge," which indicates that Denver may want Fields or rookie center Timofey Mozgov included in the deal. The Knicks would also acquire point guard Chauncey Billups as well as other players, including Anthony Carter, to satisfy salary-cap guidelines.

Denver feels it has leverage because of its proposed deal with the Nets. In the nine-player trade, Anthony, Billups, Shelden Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman would go to the Nets. Denver would receive Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni are reportedly not in favor of making the trade with Denver. The News reported Thursday on its website that Dolan, Stan Kroenke, Walsh and Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri had had a conference call to discuss the deal. It was during that conversation that the Knicks agreed to trade Gallinari.

A Knicks source said Friday that with Dolan assuming control of the negotiations and being the lone Knicks official to meet with Anthony on Thursday, ultimately the decision to make the deal will be his.

"The Knicks are giving up a lot, but I can't imagine Jim's ego allowing himself not to do the deal," the source said. "Denver wanted to deal directly with Jim because they feel he'll be more willing to make the trade."

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov was expected to arrive in Los Angeles late Friday and is still hopeful of meeting privately with Anthony. Prokhorov, minority owner Jay-Z and GM Billy King would all be part of the meeting.

Anthony said Friday that there was no scheduled meeting with the Nets and that he was growing impatient with the process. He was supposed to meet with the Nets in January, before Prokhorov temporarily pulled the plug on negotiations.

According to one rival executive, it "looks like the Nets have been used for leverage."

As for Anthony: "I haven't got any sleep in a week. I want to get it done," he said. "Before I leave (Los Angeles), I would love to have something on the table. I would love to have a legit offer on the table where we can sit down and they can say, ' 'Melo, this is what we have, let's try to figure it out.'

"The Nuggets have to weigh their options," Anthony added. "If it's a deal with somebody else that's legit, then we all have to sit there and talk about it. But time is ticking and time is money."

Anthony said he'd have to "deeply consider" signing an extension with the Nets if he was presented with a trade. His good friend and former wedding guest, Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire, was skeptical.

"I'd be surprised," he said. "It's hard to picture him in a Nets jersey."

Barring a trade, Anthony is slated to become a free agent this summer, but the uncertainty of a new collective bargaining agreement is a major factor in his decision. If Anthony doesn't sign the extension with the Nets and enters free agency he could risk losing up to $20 million.

148-140 Final..Rookies pull it out..Fields with his typical lunch pail, unselfish, team-first effort. Let's hope this kid still has a Knick uniform on next week.

So we keep Moz and Fields? I'm pumped.

- Chauncey/Fields/Melo/Stat/Moz with a Williams/TD/Walker/Turiaf bench?

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Pretty much done with my die hard status if they trade gallo. I still don't get why we are giving up so much for a player who is second tier. Why the hell can't we let this young gritty team develop. This is the wrong move I hope the mad Russian saves us from a huge mistake.

dumb ass trade if this goes down.. I am convinced.. REBUILDING WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN NY!! EVER!!

I know you are emotional right now, and Gallo is perhaps your fav player and it styings to lose him, but explain why this is a bad deal? We are trading Gallo a good but inconsistant 22 yr old, Chandler who walks anyway, and swapping Felt for a more playoff experienced player in Billups. It seems as if we Knick fans wanted to rape the Nuggs and get an allstar for fodder. But what about the Nuggs fan base? You have to give to get and I think this is a fair deal. Melo is by far the best player in this trade.

Honestly, I am losing interest, now it is reported that denver wants fields instead of chandler because chandler is a RFA, and it is also reported that dolan has taken over trade negotiations.. ROFL.. which means Isiah is now our GM.. if this trade goes down, I am done... will start watching nuggets games.... for real..

It's hard to imagine that Walsh and D'Antoni could be this dumb. If it's getting rammed down their throat by Dolan, then any self respecting person that is already wealthy (like Walsh and D'Antoni) would simply resign. There will plenty of work for both if they want it. If it's Walsh and D'Antoni doing this trade, then they are obviously dumb asses that are bidding against themselves for one of the most over rated players in the NBA by giving away assets that could easily be traded for more value to fill more critical needs or developed long term.

Dang. That is too much to give up. I don't want Gallo to go but if he has to go then you can't give up Chandler too. This is too much to give. Donnie playing this right but I think Dolan blinked. Dang.

looks like Denver is playing this perfectly--they used Carmelo to fill seats until the last minute and now they are going to rape one of two teams.

There will be Knick fans who dont care if we give up Mosgov Fields Gallo Randolph Chandler Felton to get this deal done too.

Isola was reporting the latest report as of 10pm tonight on SNY tv. Isola strongly believes a deal will go through by sunday the latest and dolan has taken over the trade discussion. Dolan might bypass his basketbal trust decision that it's way too much of a deal to go through. Thats the latest report.

Knicks and Denver mgmt were on a conference call this evening. Denver would prefer Fields and that might be the hold up. They know Chandler will leave via free agency but they feel fields can be theirs for the long run. GAllo and Felton are definitely gone! Dolan is going to do whatever he can to get Carmelo here.

The Future. GO KNICKS!

There were those who felt that there really wasn't much difference between STAT and Lee. The stats look pretty close and neither guy was known for great D. Still you have the intangible part of the game that goes overlooked when just looking at stats. STAT impacts the game and forces the other team to change how they play. Lee doesn't have that kind of effect on opponents. Melo is a similar impact player. He's not the most efficient star, but he can totally destroy a teams defense and he instills fear in opposing teams. Melo hits game winning shots and has no fear when going up against the best players in the league.

The thing is that when you pair 2 dominant players like this together theirs an exponential effect. It's not like they cancel each other out. They enhance each other and cause major problems for the other team. How do you gameplan for the Knicks in the future with 2 unstoppable players. The Celtics don't have that. Pierce and Allen are really good, but they're not unstoppable. Only the Heat in the East have 2 truly unstoppable players like that. That will eventually put us in the elite level in the East. I can't understand why some fans are against this trade. This is the start of how we can build a title team.

I'm really ok with this or if Fields stays instead of Wilson. That is a team you can build off of. That's a starting point for a perennial contender.

If we do this deal--maybe we can do side deals to juice the bench up--not necessary to hold out for caps space two years from now. Go get a bench is next. if we keep WC we have a good starting unit.
