i think Wilson's just as good if not better than Luol Deng already... just dunno if he can ever become a go to guy on this team... u also need to have the opportunity & right now the shots are being distributed to a variety of guys w/the primary focus being put on Amare in the PnR... Wilson needs to develop his handle more & become more consistent w/his J... if he can manage to do those things, he'll get more plays called for him & he'll be able to get to the FT line more as a result... adding 2 or 3 more shot attempts per game along w/3 or 4 more FT shot attempts will enable him to take that next step towards becoming a viable go to guy.

Right. But it'll be harder to build a championship contender with Wilson Chandler making Deng $

the diff between a good player/star/superstar is kinda semantics at this point. everyone has their own definition of each category.

we're gonna have to pay Wilson sooner or later if we decide to keep him... same goes for Gallo... there's only a short window where teams can really build a championship contender unless u just do a crazy job of drafting talent & managing the cap the way the Spurs have done over the years... if we pass on acquiring any big money guys now, we better be good enough to contend for championships w/what we have because Wilson & Gallo are gonna take up a chunk of the cap in a couple years... if we decide to hold onto all our pieces, we'll have enough to sign maybe 2 quality role players this summer at around midlevel type dollars, so we better make sure those guys are capable of taking us over the top because at that point we're invested into keeping Wilson & Gallo around for the longterm... neither one of them are gonna sign for peanuts on their next contract.

Well he'll get more than the MLE, so you have to consider which teams have cap room, and have a vacancy at SF. Off the top of my head, Clippers, but I'm sure there are others.

Travis Outlaw got $7M with the Nets, but the Nets were desperate and had to offer over the MLE to get Outlaw. I think Chandler will get somewhere in the $8-10M starting salary range.

I've said this before but our best option would be to S&T Chandler, but after we have acquired Melo this season via trade. Once we're in a position of strength in negotiations (ie. we'd have the ability to match any offer for Chandler if we're not preserving cap space for Melo), then if any team like the Clippers want Chandler, we can pressure some good assets out of them (1st round picks, youth, etc.) Kenyon Martin yielded 3 1st round picks as a RFA S&T; Joe Johnson 2 1st round picks and Diaw; Eddy Curry (ugh) 2 1st round picks and Sweetney. If no team is really interested in Chandler to give up that much assets...well that just means we can resign him at a cheaper price.

honestly, if i'm Wilson's agent i'm using guys like Luol Deng, Andre Iguodala & Gerald Wallace as a base point for negotiations... if u compare Wilson's #'s to those guys, they compare very favorably... plus Wilson's at least 2 years younger than either of them... that's basically what David Lee signed for this past summer... i would imagine the Knicks won't be willing to go that high to extend Wilson, & he might have to sign for less... IMHO i think Wilson would be worth about 5 years ~$45M on his next contract... at that point it pretty much takes us out of the running for any impact players in free agency... that's why i think we should take our shot at getting a bigname now & take our chances... i like Wilson a lot but i'm not sure he can take that next step to being that go to guy we need.

Allan Houston did not have a superior handle--but good enough--Wilson's handle at 6-8 is good enough and hes young enough to continue to improve it. Wilson is easily one of the most under rated players in the NBA. He fits in well here. I look at Wilson as a guy who is a better version of Allan Houston at the same stage in their careers. That is why you have to be careful making decisions on 22-23 yo kids who produce like this. Hes not at his peak yet hes already close 2 a 20 point guy shooting close to 50%

come on briggs... chandler gets plenty of shots and touches, he should be a 20ppg scorer and he is not.. he is also a tweener on defense and in the worst way. can't guard mobile bigs or wing players for that matter.. He is good going against bigger and slower forwards... classic example, he put the ball on the floor and bosh pretty much ripped him on the first dribble. chandler got lucky to recover the ball and throw up a shot that went in. He is not a complete enough offensive player to get that many touches. set him up, let him go against bigger and slower defenders to the hoop, but putting the ball in his hands on a consistent basis to create is absolutely ridiculous.... he just isn't that type of player.. yes his jumper has gotten a lot better, so lets let him roam the baseline and the perimeter.. move the ball and find him open.. having him up at the elbow is not wha this offense needs...

frankly chandler is a better version of houston. sprewell was a better version of houston (yes i went there.) chandler reminds me of what ny had in sprewell (minus the d!ckyness of spree's 'tude.)

FistOfOakley wrote:gallo has been an efficient scorer despite his bad fg%. he made one REALLY BAD judgment shooting a contested 20 footer against lebron with around 2 minutes remaining but aside from that he has made good decisions with the basketball.

chandler has been the most consistent producer for us so far this season and really started by him making better judgement with the basketball. when he forces perimeter shots he is at his worst but he's cut those down dramatically after he got into the starting lineup.

we're incorporating more and more plays every game. the elbow iso, the top of the key pnr and amar'e off the curl. gallo is a much better ball handler though so i'd like to see him off the elbow and create for amar'e.

Gallo disappears because we are Amare-centric right now. Felton has to control and manage the game a bit more. Felton needs to make sure all players are involved in the offense in the half court set once in awhile. Amare should definitely have the majority of the touches in the half court set but he needs to make sure Gallo/Mayor get some set plays thrown their way. This will not only help Gallo and Chandler but it will help Amare as well. A lot of times Gallo is the safety valve for Amare and he plays that really well but you need to get him comfortable in the half court set when he is called upon. I like that elbow screen they setup for Gallo where he catches on top of the key with Amare ending up in the FT line. A PnR situation with Gallo and Amare there is the best option. Gallo can drive and dunk or pass to Amare for a dunk.

I love Felton and his bulldog tenacity but he forgets to setup Gallo in the halfcourt set sometimes. He does look for him a lot on transition but against the Heat they could not run effectively.

Dont blame Amare for Gallo's disappearing acts. The board was complaing about Gallo disappearing last year as well, obviously before Amre got here. Its time we point the finger at Gallo, who lacks the mental makeup to demand the ball. He seems like he's content to be one of the guys, which is something superstars dont do. Also, see Gallos comments about not being in the same league with Lebron, Melo, etc.

I mentioned this earlier, but a couple of things separate Gallo and Chandler. Why is that Chandler doesn't have a problem getting off shots and Gallo does? I think Gallo is content with being one of the guys (notice his coments about not being in the same class as Lebron, Melo etc). Forget this year, but Gallo couldn't get enough shots last year when we had a bum squad but Chandler didn't have that problem. Despite not having all the tools to be a star, Chandler seems to want it more. Confidence is what separates most of the great players from the good players and Chandler gets in there and mixes it up with the big boys. Every year he adds something to his game, and these are the players you keep because he doesn't have a ceiling at this point of his career. Not to mention, Chandler also has a very good midrange game, which Gallo does not have.

probably one reason some fans say gallo is better or try to dampen the noise about chandler progression. we afraid to lose chandler. think about it he is becoming damn near unaffordable for the knicks. we kind of in our own melo situation with him. trade him or lose him for nothing. cause no matter what briggs wishes chandler is not signing for $6 mil a season for ny. he going for that david lee money.

i wouldn't be surprised if he gets over 10mm. there really is no telling what is going to happen in the next cba. maybe we can get a draft pick in return for him? hopefully there is more flexibility for resigning players but i doubt it. who knows.

making a trade to upgrade while also holding onto Wilson will allow us to use the Bird exception to sign him to his next contract & go over the cap... otherwise we either have to pay to keep him & use up a big chunk of the cap space we will have this summer, or try & work out a S&T at the deadline... simply renouncing him to clear cap space would be an irresponsible move to make & i doubt DW would let it come to that.
