I totally disagree with this. Gallo is a very good player that is being misused in this system he maybe playing hurt which should be respected in its own way. Personally I would sit him until he is better. The culprit behind the losing is MDA, I respect what he did with the Suns but he needs to adjust and come up with a new approach to the team he has. If MDA isn't able to adjust to his talent then it will be a long season. So far MDA has failed the team with very poor game planning. Lack of execution of game plan. Players are to free to jack up shots on the whim. This system currently run by the Knicks is a fail system. MDA needs to adjust just as Pat Riley adjusted to his talents from Showtime to Knicks and Heat. A coach cannot have one approach to a game and continue to do it even when it is a failed system. MDA has failed to realize in game adjustment. Last night team makes a comeback by driving consistently to the hoop. They break away from what was working to go back to jacking threes, this is an example of poor in game management.
I'm a believer that it isn't always the coaches fault. In Brown's case, it was the players the last two years it was the players because the team had a bigger goal of getting cap space. this year it not about the players its on the coach to bring it all together and he needs to look himself in the mirror and ask himself what he can do to better utilize the talent he has. That is one of marks of a great coach, is his ability to adjust to the talent he has and bringing out the best in them. This is not a three point shooting team and he needs to realize that. There has to be a higher level of execution by the Knicks. This team is playing sloppy basketball, taking ill advised shots thats on the coach for poor preperation.
This really sums it up for me. I think we have enough talent here that if we get proper coaching, we should be a decent team, good enough to make the playoffs. Some teams require more coaching than others, and this team clearly needs structure. The problem is, D'Antoni seems to think he has the same team he had in Phoenix.
As Vmart points out, Pat Riley is the classic example of a coach who had success with a talented team, then went to a team not nearly as talented and changed his style dramatically in order to get the most out of his new team. What was the main thing Riley did? He turned the Knicks into one of the league's top defensive teams. Few teams over the years played defense with the passion that those Knicks did. Yes, it helped to have Ewing and Oakley leading the way, but if D'Antoni were coaching that team, you think it would have been nearly as passionate about defense? And do you think it would have achieved the same success?
A good NBA coach can coach any type of team to some success, as long as that team has some talent. For two years, D'Antoni was given a free ride, for obvious reasons. But it's time for him to adapt to what he has. He has to figure out a way to get the Knicks into the playoffs. I really believe that. It would be unacceptable for us not to make it.
Why are we shooting so many 3s when we are not a good 3-point shooting team? I do not consider Chandler a good 3-point shooter, yet he takes 5.4 3s a game, even though he is so much more effective when he takes the ball to the hoops. Why does he take so many 3s? Because he can do it without D'Antoni telling him not to.
Yes, Gallo is obviously hurting us now. We are always a better team when he is on. But we also have lost a couple of games where we were pretty clueless on our final possessions, and that's largely D'Antoni's fault.
I think this team showed in the first few games that it is more than capable of playing good defense and has enough talent to fashion a good offense. Now it's up to D'Antoni to do his part and get the team to play consistent ball on both sides.
I think Walsh has done a very good job during his time with the Knicks, but if D'Antoni can't get this team to perform to its capability then I want a change on the sidelines after the season.
