NEW YORK — Indiana Pacers draft pick Lance Stephenson, after pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, grabbed her and hit her head on the bottom step, prosecutors said Monday.

A judge released Stephenson, 19, without bail late Sunday night after his arrest on assault, menacing and harassment charges. Prosecutors had asked for $7,500 bail.

Authorities say the confrontation occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday when the victim, Jasmine Williams, was returning home to her apartment building with two friends. Witnesses said Stephenson was waiting for her and yelled, "Are you kidding me?" before pushing her down the stairs.

A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney's office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.

When police arrived, Stephenson told them the woman had fallen down the stairs, prosecutors said. The complaint said Williams suffered head and back wounds, and possible damage to her neck.

Pacers president Larry Bird has said he was aware of the situation. Stephenson attorney Alberto Ebanks didn't return phone and e-mail messages Monday.

Stephenson was one of the nation's top high school prospects. He played one season at Cincinnati before applying for early entry to the NBA draft.

Dude, maybe as she lay there bleeding on the bottom step, she was spitting and kicking at him. Don't hate!

Maybe she had a gun, and he wanted to make sure she didn't come out of her daze and blast his ass away.. so he slamed her head a good two more times so she could have another 2 mins of unconsiousness..IDK..

But for real folks, what he did was ridiculous, i'm not sure what promoted his actions, but there really isn't a logical explanation for hitting a woman unless your life is in jeapordy. then you have to defend yours.

any word on whether or not these "two friends" that she was returning home with at 5 am were dudes she was cheating on him with? just curious... not to condone an act of violence against any woman, just trying to understand the circumstances surrounding what happened here... this kid obviously has anger management issues... whether or not she was messing around or not, he has no right to be doing to her what he did... kid needs some serious counseling.

And juding from the photos, she probably was pretty tipsy..

Now this banging her head on the step I think is pure bull****. Everyone is talking about the strength of a man 6'5" 200 plus pounds...if he banged her head on the steps she would be dead or experiencing more than just head and kneck injuries.

Also someone else smells bull**** in this story because Lance was released with NO BAIL....that says it all to me. If he did what the reports say he did then the bail would have been a significant amount. People put all types of things in criminal complaints...doesn't mean it happened.

Anyway, get bent out of shape if you want, btu i'm not defending the dude. I'm just saying this sounds like an accident. If its more than that and he's found guilty of "All I head was him saying what??? then next thing you know gave her some blows and then threw her down the stairs. after he did that he went down and banged her head on the floor...he just stood there too and we didn't even yell at him or try to stop him. He waited till the police came too."

The reporters said his blows sent her down the stairs and gave her head and neck injuries. Then they say he did that and the banged her head on the floor...now another says she had back "wounds". Get the **** outta here man...it sounds like pure bull****.

Anyway....we need to wait and see what happens before you real men pass judgement.

Jason Kidd actually did punch his wife and told her to call the cops and is heard on the 911 tape poppin **** to her in the background with his kids crying in the background....yet everyone was all for getting him last year in free agency. give me a freakin break
