Exactly, the thought of Melo not being an elite player is crazy.
Whoever it was that said they would have Melo as their 6th man should be banned.
Unless of course he was kidding...then I would be kidding.

come on now, let's try and be realistic here.

elite status comes from post season success in my view. thats why jordan/bird/magic/kobe/russell/etc get the most accolades. take away jordans titles and he becomes dominique. "human highlight real" was great to watch, however he ended up outside looking in.

i dont think folks are giving anthony a hard time on stats or reg season games. you gotta do something in the playoffs at some point. even without help, time and folks are not forgiving. will folks compare mcgrady to kobe -- reg season they have some interesting matchups. post season kobe >>> tmac.

every single one of those players you mentioned played with another top20 player of all-time.. who has Melo played with? i'm not raggin on billups because he's a tough player but cmon but who else is melo playing with like those guys have played with?

Elite Players in the NBA (IMHO):

Kobe
LeDouche
DWade
Dirk
Durant
Deron Williams
Chris Paul
Nash
Dwight Howard
Duncan
KG from a few years back

? marks on: Melo, Rondo, Granger, Pierce, Joe Johnson

I would say it's not crazy to include the ? mark guys in the bottom tier of Elite Players

I think a better discussion would focus on whether a guy is in the top X% at his position or age group or even
top X% in the league.

There are about 400-450 guys in the NBA. As of April 2010 there were 432

Top 1% = top 4-5 guys
Top 5% = top 21 guys

To me, top 5% = elite. Which means Melo is elite cuz i can't name 20 guys better than him in the league. I think...

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

Don't know if the numbers will bear this out but I wonder if the writer doesn't consider
Iverson to have been an elite player because of all the shots he jacked up over his career?

As long as he cuts down on the 3-pt attempts, Melo is elite. Its the 3s that bring him down.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

To respond to the post however, if you did a fantasy draft of players not based on roto stats, but based on your ability to build a franchise around these guys, I don't know how you leave Melo out of this discussion. I don't know how you pick half of the veterans over Melo. Or injury plagued players.

My list?
1) Durant
2) James
3) Wade
4) Howard
5) Paul
6) Roy
7) Rose
8) Melo
9) Williams
10) Bosh

Then there are a lot of guys that you have high expectations form but I am not sure you would pick them over the proven quantities--- guys like John Wall...

Dammit. How could I overlook Drago? Sorry..I can't think of any other nickname.

I would like him to challenge someone at this point and say "I will break him." with a straight face

Well, if Berman keeps calling Gallo the Italian Stallion (we get it, it rhymes), they could face off in a Rocky IV re-enactment...

I forgot to comment on this earlier. Crap article. I'm not a diehard Melo fanboy, but he's one of the best in the league. Easily top 10. About 30 teams, 15 per team, 450 players in total...top 10 IS elite. He's still far from done. Bad ESPN, bad!

really, exactly how many game did this guy play..he may have only played 40 games after this picture.

AI was no super star in Denver, and they won more games after his departure

dude was a 30 ppg scorer when he joined the Nuggets... if u don't consider that superstar numbers u got some lofty standards there my friend.

After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

what are you gonna do though. same can be said for wilkens, barkely, our own in ewing... in the end fair or not, thats the way folks seem to be judged (i realize im doing it and its just my view of how it goes). he still has time though to either play with better guys or just flat out dominate. i think kd may over take him though.

There's Kobe, Durant, Lebron (Wade as well I guess, just to shut Marv up lol)....and then there's everyone else.

Melo is great, but he's not ELITE.

agreed. but, hey, if ESPN is already slamming melo, they must think he's coming to the knicks.

Wasn't tmac in the mvp voting when he was in the low 40 percentile? (Yeah he was, just looked it up haha)

No way Pierce is that high in my honest opinion. He's a spot up shooter who looks bad when he tries to do too much. JJ is good but i can't call him elite. He averaged like 21 a game i think. I think Granger was around 25 and even though I dont consider him elite either, at least the numbers are there.

Agreed. You have the top 4 and then there is a small drop off. After that you can throw in Nash, Paul, Deron, Melo, Dirk, Rose, Bosh Howard. But Melo shot a higher % than Kobe and he's not effecient enough to be near the top. He's still worth a max. Especially if JJ is.
