He may not be a star but he's a solid top of the rotation guy. I dont see the point in stockpiling a bunch of B rated guys who wont get burn here. A Felton/Douglas/Chandler rotation may not be ideal but its got more advantages than shortcomings
Last year he sucked, but the year before he was good- we'll soon know which was the real Rudy, I suppose. Actually now that he's said he WOULD be willing to accept a 20min bench role if he was traded to new york, I think he would be a good player to get (although, as I've said before, only for Bill Walker- the fact that he's telling other teams he will only accept a bench role with the Knicks, is hopefully diminishing his trade value further), as long as he adopts a better attitude- it would be a pretty low risk move and I think he's a better player than he showed last year, but most importantly he seems like a better fit for us- as much as I liked Bill Walker last year, we have too many SF's on the bench and not much else- if Chandler gets injured, or Felton or Douglas, then we're instantly screwed, the way things stand at the moment, and I'm not a fan of signing Shannon Brown.
where are Rudy's 20 mmp coming from?project a rotation:
Felton
Chandler
Gallo
Amare
Randolph
That leaves 3 guys. We know MDA loves Douglas now after his strong finish so he's in. You figure (assuming AR starts) that at least one of the centers will make the rotation. Either Turiaf or Drago. That leaves the 8th man in the rotation, and a logjam of guys to fight for it. Azu, Walker, Fields even... I dont see Rudy as any better than the other options and we would actually have to give up something to get him
I'm hoping D'Antoni uses a longer rotation this year. Also while Chandler can start at 2 guard, I'd rather see him take Harrington's minutes and be the backup 3 and 4 but basically playing starters minutes. See I think the problem with the line up you propose, although most likely, is that there's a distinct lack of shooting:
Felton- good 3 point % last year, but it was a contract year and every other year he's been poor at shooting, so expect him to revert back
Chandler- became a better player when he gave up shooting all those three's and took it inside- thats when he's at his best
Gallo- good 3 point shooter
Amar'e
Randolph (or Turiaf)- while I think Randolph will become a better shooter, it probably won't be good enough this year
I'm worried that Azubuike won't be ready or fully 100% by the start of the season, and that Bill Walkers shooting may have been a bit of a fluke last year. I'm also worried that if either TD or Felton get injured, even for a few games we don't have any backups for that spot. Rudy fits in the sense that he's meant to have play making skills (he and Douglas might mask each others weaknesses when playing together), and is a good shooter, and is more of a SG than Bill Walker (I like him as a player, though I wish I hadn't seen his performance in summer league!). We have depth, but unfortunately its only at one position.
