yeah, DW went ahead w/the trade even after Mobley failed his physical... he wanted the cap space, & i support that decision... i think if he does anything at the deadline this year, it'll be to get T-Mac... other than that, i don't see anything major going down... but then again he's shocked us all in the past by being able to unload Zach's contract, so who knows.

It looks as if this is going to happen. Maybe it'll be another swap of contracts. I would hope we can dump Jeffries but it may just be Hughes, Harrington, Nate for TMAC.

===

Alan Hahn reports that Mike D'Antoni is pushing Donnie Walsh to acquire Tracy McGrady, who has been exiled by the Rockets.

McGrady is coming off major knee surgery and is in the final season of his contract. D'Antoni would presumably assign ballhandling and playmaking duties to McGrady in an attempt to revive a Knicks team that has fallen out of the playoff race.

Hahn states that Walsh is trying to make the deal happen and McGrady is preparing to be traded to New York.

Bingo. Walsh goes out and gets a big name suddenly our layoff hopes are reborn.

Daryl Morey, Rockets GM, wants youth in return for T-Mac. This guy waited to long to approve the 3-way and Dallas swooped in and stole Haywood AND Butler. Waiting for Morey and Walsh to make a deal will be like watching paint dry.

You do know you're hacking on Walsh after reading and falling for a bogus article of speculation right?

There were substantive discussions on Sunday between the Knicks’ president, Donnie Walsh; Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey; and McGrady’s agent, Arn Tellem, according to the people, who did not want to be identified discussing the negotiations.

The Knicks and the Rockets are trying to make the trade without the assistance of a third team, but the Knicks may not have the pieces necessary. There is also the challenge of matching McGrady’s $23 million salary.

Any deal for McGrady would involve some combination of Knicks with expiring contracts — Al Harrington, Larry Hughes, Darko Milicic or the retired Cuttino Mobley — and a young player, possibly Jordan Hill, the Knicks’ 2009 lottery pick.

Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/15/sports/basketball/15mcgrady.html

I trust Howard Beck. Walsh is interested in McGrady.

I also dont know how I hacked at Walsh when he is known to be slow to make deals.

i think enough has been reported on this rumor in the papers, the internet & on TV for there to be something to these rumors... the Knicks are obviously highly interested in acquiring T-Mac... i doubt Walsh would include Hill or Douglas w/o getting back something else tho... that would go completely against his mantra to build for 2010.

Walsh just said it is doubtful he would trade Hill or Douglas for a rental.

Walsh also sounded as if he wouldn’t be willing to move rookies Jordan Hill or Toney Douglas in any deal for a rental player (i.e., someone who’s going to be a free agent this summer). Said Walsh, “I doubt that. I’ll answer it that way.”

Why? TMac actually avg'd near 6 assists in his best years. He's more of a threat with the ball and that would open things up even more for Lee and Chan & Gallo.

Neither do I but I think that's an assumption and not truth.

Also this team isn't making the playoffs even if TMac had 3 career-level months here. It's just not happening.

But I can see the trade being done to get rid of Al and Hughes and Nate who are all at odds with the coach now. I can see it being done to free up roster space for the obligatory scrub signings Walsh seems to like to take a peek at.

I hate TMac I really do but I would absolutely do a Nate,Harrington,Hughes for TMac + some asset. (Hey, let's face facts, Nate isn't trash and neither is Harrington. So I'd want something in return beyond JUST TCrap. OR, They must take Jeffries. One or the other.

waste of time. my broken record: play the young guys which they should have been trying to do all season. this fascination with the playoffs is fools gold.

as to the stats: so? jordan had high asst avgs too, and he was a ball hog (elite no doubt, while i dont think mcgrady is). like this team needs guys to dominate the ball

It's true Walsh found out about Mobley's heart condition before the trade was official. My opinion is that he thought he could figure out a way to use Mobley's condition to reduce payroll, which is pretty ghoulish.

Cosmic, I am with you on this.
Here is what I would like to see(assuming Houston won't take Jeffries:
Nate,Harrington,Hughes for TMac + Lowry
It works on Trade Checker.

Houston gets 3 expiring contract players who can help them this year for the playoffs. Knicks get McGrady(eh) and Lowry as PG which we need. Lowry has QO for $3 mil for next year.

You are right - Morey is the Big unknown. Who can figure how he is thinking? He does like a harmonious team feeling which is one reason he probably doesn't want Hughes coming off the bench. Al would be fine but they already have 2 pretty good PF. One thing is obvious-they really needed a Big at Center and blew it by letting Wash trade Hayward and Butler to Dallas.

UGH. just heard a rumor that involves us giving up what IMHO is WAY WAY WAY too much to get rid of jefferies...more details to come

he New York Knicks are getting closer to reaching the Houston Rockets’ demands for Tracy McGrady(notes) and his $23 million expiring contract, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Knicks and Rockets have designed the framework of a deal that would unload New York’s Jared Jeffries(notes), Jordan Hill(notes) and either Al Harrington(notes) or Larry Hughes(notes) for McGrady, Joey Dorsey(notes) and Brian Cook(notes).

As talks stood on Monday, the price of dumping the burdensome contract of Jeffries – who is owed $6.9 million next season – comes with the Knicks and Rockets exchanging 2011 first-round picks and the Knicks’ 2012 first-round choice going to Houston. New York also might include a 2010 second-round pick.

The Utah Jazz own the Knicks’ first-round pick in 2010.

The completion of the deal isn’t imminent, but sources involved in the discussions are increasingly confident that after months of back and forth, which intensified over All-Star weekend, an agreement is within reach. TNT’s David Aldridge first reported that talks between the teams had picked up.

One of the hang-ups in the deal, sources said, could be the Knicks’ inclusion of either Harrington or Hughes. There are slight variations of the trade that would change depending on which of the two veteran Knicks’ expiring contracts are included. With Harrington over Hughes in the deal, the Rockets wouldn’t need to include Cook.

For the Knicks, the trade would accomplish two important things: First, it would get Jeffries’ salary cleared out, something general manager Donnie Walsh has tried to do since taking the job. This would give the Knicks even more flexibility to be a major player in this summer’s free-agent market. Also, the Knicks want to take a good look at McGrady and let him play as much of a role as he can handle the rest of the season. They may consider re-signing him for next season, based on his performance.

Rockets GM Daryl Morey would get Hill, the untested eighth pick in the 2009 draft, and first-round picks that could prove valuable. This will get the Rockets a significant measure of value for McGrady, who they exiled in December. McGrady, sources said, is excited about the possibility of joining the Knicks.

All I can say is WOWwwww.. I read this as well. At first thought.. swapping 1st rounders in 2011 doesnt seem so bad. Giving away a second pick in 2012??? Thats the question mark? All at the sake of trading Jeffries contract eh? THE ONLY WAY THIS TURNS OUT TO BE FAVORABLE FOR NYK IS: If TMac can resurrect his career avg 20ppg.. and we somehow are able to sign TWO MAX FREE AGENTS IN 2010.

I just said that to my friend. But if T-mac does come back 100% doesn't he look to get paid? Maybe the market will say he needs a full season to warrant a long term deal and we can get him cheap for 1 year.

Question for you guys:

Would you do this deal if instead of giving away picks we give them Gallo or Hill?

For me if it's a choice between standing pat and letting Jefferies expire vs. sacrificing picks in the hopes of signing Wade/Bosh or LBJ/Bosh this offseason...let's stay pat. If we do this trade and Cleveland gets Amare we're done anyway.

Way easier to get Wade to get Bosh to Miami then for BOTH to come to NYC>
