Some vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5pKslHoYaQ of last years ACC semi-final tournament game. Lawson was seated during this game. In the game at the Civic Center in Tallahassee
UNC won on a last second buzzer beater by Lawson. After the game Lawson was quoted as saying about Toney.."I didn't know he was that good."

After his fresman year at Auburn ..TD tested NBA waters but withdrew from the draft. A move that was not appreciated by Auburn's coach. So he transfers to FSU and sits a year.

His first year on the floor at FSU he teams with Al Thorton (now with the Clippers) and makes some noise. Upsetting U of Florida (Lee on that squad iirc with Nick Calathes, Udonis Haslem and Yoachim Noah} and Duke they seemed primed to make it to the NCAA but Toney breaks an ankle and the 'Noles drop the next 6 in a row...settling for the NIT's

Next year. Alabi has issues and FSU with no inside presence plays a 4 guard line-up much of the season. NIT's

Last year. The season begin with a freshman dominated roster. Toney takes it upon himself to get them ready. FSU is picked to end up as the number 8-9 finisher in conference play. It is ugly basketball accentuating defense most of the early season...Toney sometimes carries the team on his back to a win.

What I didn't like about Toney: he showed this in Summer League as well...sometimes picks up his dribble and more than once was called for over and back. I believe D'Antoni has coached him over this cause I don't see it in the scrimmage footage that I have seen.

I've been a Seminole basketball fan long enough to have personally watched (TV) Cowens vs Artis Gilmore, Sura, Ward and Cassel. (BTW anyone notice how much Duhon looks like Sam?)

Toney's game is not like Ward's. Toney does not fear the paint. He is stronger and maybe faster. Ward was more cerebral. The rest of the intangibles ...leading by example...yada yada Toney has them.

The press is all wrapped up in the idea of him as a shooter. Bah. He is a point first but can rotate to two to make a mismatch if it's there.

I remember reading of "Clyde" showng up in the Garden all decked out for a game. If it were Toney doing this he'd dress in coveralls and bring a hardhat and a lunch pail. He is a gamer and never quits.

Prediction- if the Knicks fall short of the playoffs...expect Toney to break down and cry...he is that into it. And expect Toney to be a great pairing with Nate. They will be good for each other I think.

Nice post. TD seems like a solid prospect. I, however, want to see how his scoring translates in the NBA. In college, he seemed to have a good mid-range game. Can he do that in the NBA? He will need to because his first step looks only average to me. He can get by people, but he is not a cross-you-over fly to the hole type player. The only thing I can say I like about him now is that he seems to know how to run an offense without turning the ball over. That fact should get him some PT before the year is over.

"He will need to because his first step looks only average to me."

Toney had the fastest shuttle time of any player in the draft this year. Lot's of guys have a killer first step...for about 5 minutes...as the game progresses they fade. Toney averaged about 37 minutes a game last year. Tough to have that explosive first step after that kind of minutes...ask Duhon.

Still think Lawson might have been faster sans turf toe..it's pretty dang close.

Your not going to see much showboat. I've never seen him dunk...not sure he can.

I see lots a guys can shoot set shots...I see lotsa guys can shoot fadeaways. he can do that...and drive to the hole...and he can shoot while in motion toward the basket.

"feel like I just walked in on an AARP knicks convo" LOL

those JU-FSU games we were discussing are classics...the Cowens vs Gilmore-Burrows thing actually caused rule changes on post play iirc ...they rival Duke vs Kemtucky with Laettners in the NCAA regionals

UCLA may have beaten those squads back then and claimed what was it 7 titles in a row? but the deck was stacked. Most of them were played in Pauley and the ref's were very ermm-ummm intimidated by Wooden

JU and FSU both made runs to the NCAA title game against UCLA back then

All that stuff above is cool. Really. But what really matters is he is the best on the ball defender I ever saw.

I vividly recall UCLA having to come from behind in each game.

And Cowens destroyed Artis too one on one...they couldn't double down on UCLA.

what I remember is at the beginning of the title game, sidney drove hard on artis and jammed huge right in his face. now dunking was illegal in the nc2a then so they lost 2 points and jax shot the t and wooden chastised sidney. but point was made and game was over. he and curtis rowe owned it.
btw I was a huge cowens fan in the pros but in college jax made the finals and not fsu

--chastises self for thread hi-jacking...warning to ops this is an off topic post and should likely moved LOL---

FSU was on probation that year. But they went 1-1 against JU iirc
But Cowens wasn't on the NCAA team for FSu's run though Artis and 'Afro' were Morgan was a player and many of those guys had long ABA careers

*peers back into the fog* Wasn't this when Walton came to UCLA and Wooden finally did away with the 'freshman sit first year' thing?

A stroll down memory lane for some http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/033007aab.html Remember this was before the 3 point line and Ron King was as good as Pistol Pete before the knees slowed him. He loved the deep corners anmd still argues that all Durham had to do was feed him the ball and they would have won.
