What happens if Lebron leaves Clev for NY and the whole thing is a complete failure? The Knicks become just a playoff team that can't make it past the 2nd round, the NY papers rake Lebron over the coals on a daily basis, and the Knicks don't have the necessary cap space to bring in a better supporting cast?

Or has everyone just dismissed this as a impossibility?

I cannot imagine a team going very far with subpar defense, no consistent outside shooting, and medicore to poor point guard play. Does everyone that much confidence in Walsh that he will address this all in a year with very limited assets and no draft picks? I think anyone believing that if Lebron signs here it will just be apart of the rebuilding process is deluding themselves. There is absolutely no doubt that immediate expectations for the Knicks will be to win a title.

Ill take my chances with Lebron on the squad, thank you.

There's also the possibility that Lebron tears up his knee and has to retire. There is also the possibility he ends up like Ewing and comes up short every year. He could come here and become a prima donna and slack off and become the scourge of NY that gets boo'd out of town. A lot of things could happen. I'm still all for going after him.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would support this plan more if Walsh was currently upgrading the talent. Because I don't really subscribe to the belief that one single free-agent or even two will make everything fall into place.

We have to see how our roster shakes out before we can start engaging in this sort of talk. If Gallo, Hill, and douglas develop and either lee or nate or both are on board then this team looks very appealing. More so than cleveland.

Question: What does rebuilding mean to you?

a.) Starting over by getting yourself in position to acquire a top level talent or core to build around

b.) Starting over by trying to sign whatever free agents happen to be on the market

If Lebron was a Knick for 5 years--drafted him--grew up with him--had success with him--very early in his career--as a fan would you care if he opted to leave our team for no apparent reason?
If Dolan was putting out the money helping the management do everything it could to try to help Lebron win--how would you feel if he got up and left? It's like Michael Jordan leaving the Bulls after 5 years or Larry Bird leaving the Celtics. The KG example is dumb--number 1 he was traded for a kings ransom and number 2 he already spent his 13 years there. Shaq is the only guy who has done this but Shaq could care less about anyone else but Shaq--and that is obvious. How could Lebron disappoint so many fans --so many kids--for what? If there was 1 legitimate reason for him to leave Cleveland--I wouldnt care but that isnt the case. If Cleveland wants to trade us Lebron James---Ok great--but leaving for no apparent reason--atleast to me is brutal and I hope he does not do it. This has nothing to do with the Knicks or any other club--we wouldnt want it done to us--nor do I want to wish it on other fans.
Did you just come back from spending the summer in Disney world with your kids? This is a totally delusional post.

Teams trade guys and make roster moves with ZERO consideration for that player's feelings or attachment to the community. Lebron is an asset to the Cavaliers. All these guys are.

Shaq did what was best for Shaq and Lebron is going to do exactly the same.

This isnt little league here. This is business... for everyone.

i hate to say it, but i can't help but feel that only would knick fans be against arguably the best player in the nba signing with the knicks.

he hasn't even been someone like a "knick killer" in jordan or reggie, who i know some fans have expressed regret over allegedly not signing the off-season we got allan houston.

what about all of the other free-agent signings that take place every year in every pro-sport?

i find it a bit odd to hail "home grown talent" (not that most players are actually from the metro nyc area) while many here are yankee fans who as a team have made a living on signing huge free-agents every single off-season.

and those who romanticize the jeter-mariano-pettit-bernie combo can then look at the lakers with shaq, billups/wallace/rip detroit, celtics recent squad or others teams in other sports that have been made from free-agency and trades.

there are also "home grown" teams that don't win either. ask the buffalo bills, oakland a's, etc.

if we were a crap team in a small market or with a fanbase that doesn't go on talk radio have 3-4 tabloid newspapers + blogs, forums, whatever ranting and raving about every single move made (for good or bad...this is what most big east coast pro sports teams face versus small market teams who have more of a luxury of either a less vocal/passionate fanbase) then getting top talent through the draft might have worked. if we didn't have dolan or isiah or layden or checketts maybe that would work.

but we are a nyc team. i'm impressed with walsh's patience under extreme scrutiny from fans just lusting for titles and blood if they don't come.

for now he can do as he does, and we will see what happens with 2010.

with djsu and others rationalizing things as "all about 2010" one wonders how any gm ever survives working in such a high pressure environment for long...

and the record books makes the answer to my question seem pretty obvious

it's easy to last in ny as a gm - you just can't FUBAR the situation like isiah...

and Briggs... Lebron wouldnt be leaving for no apparent reason. There would be very clear reasons. He can make more money. He will get more exposure. He likes the coach 100x better. He wants to live in the area. There are always reasons. Just because you dont like them or agree doesnt mean there are no apparent reasons.

He can make more money
Can't Clev offer him a better long-term contract and endorsement deals will always come Lebron's way as long as his team's remain successful. If Clev wins a title while he's there you honestly think Nike or any other other company is going to pay him any less because he won it in Clev? Money and success run hand and hand. If a player performs well on a elite team money will follow him. If Lebron comes here and NY performs expectations now how will that play for his endorsements? That's the real question.
He will get more exposure
So I honestly think the exposure issue would be very valid 20 years ago but not in the age the internet, NBA TV, all-season packages Pre-Season International games etc. My good friend in Australia probably watches more NBA games then I do.
He likes the coach 100x better
If serious doubts about this statement because if this was really true Lebron would have pushed D'Antoni's name when he was available last off season.
He wants to live in the area
There is nothing stopping him from purchasing a home in NYC. Somehow I think Lebron can afford the airfare to NYC on a regular basis
thats how you see it which doesnt matter. Its how Lebron sees is that matters. If he wants to be here he will come. Just because he can afford to come doesnt mean he will.

My point is there are reasons, whether they are important enough to make the move will be up to Lebron, not whether you or I decide they make enough sense.

DJ... I think its been so long since Knick fans saw anything good they dont know what they want or think is a winner. I thought Ewing was winner and those were great teams. No they didnt win titles and yes I think Ewing's career takes a hit because Hakeem beat him head to head. It doesnt take away the division titles and great playoff battles they won and lost. Those were great times to be a Knick fan.

And Lebron being a bust here? Really? Was Ewing a bust? We won 50 games for a decade and had a chance every year to go all the way. As a fan asking for more ignorant. Yankee fans (I'm one) have learned just how hard winning titles in any sport are. Pats fan were reminded by the GMEN two years ago how hard winning titles are.

I will be happy to be in it every year and watching a team trying to win it every year. Those days left with Patrick.

We ALL want the same thing in NY: A reason to cheer, championship or not. I just want to get excited when I watch my basketball team (for whom I have rooted ardently since the 1970's) and to feel that hoops at the NBA level has relevance for me once again.

you are in the minority on this board. the overwhelming sentiment on this forum is that if you don't win a title, you're not "winner".

when a team has advanced to the 2nd round or conference finals, most here look at that and ask "but what have they won?"

you're view of sports is probably alot more healthy than many others. a reason to cheer doesn't necessarily involve lebron.

Who comprises this "overwhelming majority" you speak of? Who are you talking about here?

BTW, I don't think the Knicks have even made it past the first round since this forum has been in existence. They were swept by the Nets in 2004.

eventually guys become "your guys."

Think the Red Sox winnig in 2004 meant less because Manny, Ortiz, Damon, Schilling, Pedro, Arroyo, Foulke... all those d-bags were FAs and players through trades? Hey they still had Wakefield.

Sorry.. I dont buy. Lebron will be the guy but if you have Lee, Gallo, Nate, Hill, Chandler and Douglas playing big roles on this team it will have a VERY home grown feel.

Fishmike,

If Lebron signs with the Knicks this is how it will break down.

NBA Finals appearance =Success

Anything less =failure

If Walsh's agenda was to put together a competitive playoff team for the Eastern Conference that could have been accomplished and it seems as though he's holding out for the "big fish" and my only point is that because Walsh is essentially putting the franchise building on hold for two years the big moves he does make better net big gains otherwise he will start getting the Laydenesque treatment for the media and fans.

So we all can sit around and pretend like we are "good little fans" who are patient and understanding when it comes to rebuilding but if the day comes that Lebron comes here people's perspectives will change very quickly.

Does anyone on this current rooster address the following:

Lack of defense

Poor point guard play (who knows maybe Douglas will be our Rondo)

Inconsistent outside shooting for a coach whose offensive scheme is largely built on offensive shooting?

I'll have to agree to disagree about Gallo, Chandler, Nate there are nothing more then gimmick players and glorified subs.

bitty I totally disagree. If we lose to the Magic in the 2nd round its a failure?

All players on a 30 win team are gimmick players and glorified subs until you stick them next to a star and they magically become a "supporting cast"

The core of the team would be 25 years old. Douglas, Chandler, Lebron, Nate, Lee, Gallo... all are 25(ish). Your looking at being in the 2nd round for the next 8 years. So then you keep adding guys until you have to formula.

Going from 23 wins to 32 wins to whatever we win this year to the 2nd round of the playoffs with a core of 25 year old players and Lebron James doesnt equal failure. Not for me it doesnt. I'm pretty sure after losing game 6 or 7 to the Magic, Celtics, Hawks or whoever Knick fans arent going to be like "that was a waste."

All it means is the GM will have more work to do.

First two = TD
Shooting = Gallo, Chandler, TD, N8, et al (TBD)

Why are you such a pessimist?

based on what? Nate and Chandler have improved every year. Gallo hasnt played anything yet. You might be right but that statement just ooozes of "Knicks didnt pick Randolph" Briggs caliber pessimism.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

hmm...not quite seeing right now how that's clear.

isiah was himself, but also acted in a way that most nyc fans like. always making moves.

think about how this off-season has drove knick fans crazy.

isiah would NEVER do what has taken place this summer.

in other words, isiah, as much as many knick fans hate him, did exactly what many fans wanted, in these sense he always tried to act corporate.

like how disney buys marvel.

like how some company does some b.s., cooking the books, ripping of people's pensions, etc. to make their business seem "reinvented" so the stock prices soar, even if it's a deck made of cards.

how's that for a paradox?

you get what you want, but really, you won't get what you want if you get what you sensationalisticly desire.

Aren't these really the same thing? How is "getting yourself in position to acquire a top level talent or core to build around" much different from "trying to sign whatever free agents happen to be on the market"? It's not like we are trying to sign jus any old FA on the market, just any young QUALITY FA. Lebron is the cream of the crop, but there are plenty f good players coming available in the next 2-3 years, even if they aren't max contract guys.

I think they are very different things. In scenario A you are getting yourself in position to acquire talent through a variety of means. You are under the cap so you can target a true star, or a couple talented players via free agency. A position we haven't been in, in 10 years. You have reasonable contracts and ending contracts so that you are in position to steal a great/good player from a team that is money conscious. You have young talent to develop and win with, or develop and trade for other talent you can win with.

In scenario B, you are taking it year by year. You aren't thinking long-term you are simply signing guys becasue they are available. Your cap space is gone so you better hope that those are the guys that can lead you to the future or once again you are stuck at 32-40 wins, a midling draft pick and no flexibility.

We are rebuilding so to me being in position to take advantage of a true player when they become avaiable is the position to be in. When you put yourself into position like that, it's when good things happen. Whether it's Lebron or not, again look at your team. It's filled with endign contracts and young players. I like Ramon Sessions but is he worth taking yourself out of the running for a big time player????

I think everyone is in the talk a good game phase of fandom. Let's play make believe and say Lebron does come here. The team will be a contender just by having him on the roster. And the first time he leads us deep into the playoffs all these "I hate having Lebron on our team, he should have stayed in Cleveland, this is bad for the game", will become "I hate having Lebron on our team, he should have stayed in Cleveland, this is bad for the game, but god this is fun!!!!!!!!".
