I have to admit that I think injecting race into the original thread seems a little It's always amazed me how a couple guys like Carmelo and nate can throw a couple sissy punches at each other and the world is ready to change the rules of basketball. Carmelo is called a thug. Nate is called a punk. Meanwhile every night some hockey player gets into a fight for no reason and we hail their toughness. I do think there is a double standard in how NBa players are viewed as thugs while hockey players are viewed as tough guys. I'll keep it benign and not bring up race, and ask someone to explain what the difference is.

Perhaps people will respond less defensively now that you are saying it and not me. What I have been trying to express to a T. Good looks.

i dunno about how anyone else views it, but personally when i see Hockey goons getting into fights on the ice, i don't view them as tough guys, i view them as goons & thugs who make a mockery of the art of their sport by their ruffian tactics... i'm not a follower of hockey & 1 of the main reasons why is because i don't see the beauty in any sport where fighting is condoned when it's not even part of the actual sport the way MMA & Boxing are... the 1 time i went to a Rangers game i got racial epithets thrown at me by drunken white dudes who were apparently hating me for blocking their view for 2 seconds while my friend & i were looking for our seats... my view of the sport of hockey is not the greatest & that has nothing to do w/the media making these guys out to be hard working blue collar tough guys to me... i'm intelligent enough to not let how the media wants to portray a sport sway my own opinions about it... that's not to say i have anything against anyone who likes hockey, it's just not for me... i find much more beauty & grace watching guys like Kobe, Lebron, Nash, CP3, Dirk, etc. taking it to the hole, moving the ball, making great no look passes, orchestrating an offense, hitting nothing but net from behind the 3 point arc or shooting in the face of a defender on a fadeaway... these are the intricacies of the sport of basketball that have made me love the sport... it has nothing to do w/how the media portrays the players as thugs or whatever else.

I brought up race when it came to Romanoski...who was wild and out of control, yet was rarely called "thug" or was attacked by the media until he damn near killed somebody.

Same goes for Hockey...Media and fans love to hurl invective at the NBA and its players, yet continually give the barbaric sport Hockey almost a complete pass.

Arkrud: I think you would be taken more seriously if you ever cared to explain your "white players work harder than black players" comment. I don't tell me it was a joke. Your history precedes you.

I said "white bbal players HAD to work harder" because of their physical deficiencies. Long white dudes are not the best athletes in the world.
And if you think people are created equal - you are 100% right but it is nothing to do with their physical ability but more with the right to be happy.
Taking words out of context is not a fair game.

Couple things:

Number 1: You were not taken out of context

Number 2: "white players HAD to work harder" is also a fallacy. Like the 4 minute mile, the more David Lee's, Chris Anderson's, Dirk Nowitski's, Chase Budinger's and BJ Mullen's of the world show that this is a fallacy and not reality, the more white athletes will steer away from hockey and volleyball and enter the world of basketball. It's also a simplistic argument. Do you think that Travis Knight had to work harder on his game to make it to the NBA then guys like Nate Robinson, Chris Paul, Isiah thomas, Spud Webb etc. There are more white hockey players is this the result of an inherent skating advantage or societal influences?

There are more white hockey players because this is northern game which was played initially on open ice.
Actually open field hockey is much more popular game that Canadian hockey.
African and Asian races historically developed in hot climate where ice was not available.
People do have racial, national, and cultural differences and there is nothing wrong about it.
Only individuals with some kind of complex can translate difference into advantages or disadvantages.
Every race, nation, and culture has things it can be proud about and ashamed about.
And in the end we will all mesh anyway so why worry?

That's the whole point. Basketball works the same way. This notion that there aren't many white basketball players because they aren't great athletes is a fallacy. Plenty of great white athletes but due to a cultural upbringing which preaches "white people can't jump" white players have been steered away from the sport. It's amazing how ever since the European influx into the NBA, now we are seeing more and more athletic white players playing US basketball. The Europeans didn't buy into this "we can't play" notion and came over full force. Magically the white player as a plodding oaf is quickly disappearing. Especially at the college levels. It's just like the 4 minute mile. If people tell you that something is genetically impossible and you beleive them then you won't do it. But once you see someone else do it, it magically becomes easier.

Evolution hasn't changed so fast that 7 footers in the NBA(both white and black) went from plodding slow runners to athletic guys like Garnett and Nowitzki that can run as fast as a guard, dribble through traffic and outjump their shorter counterparts. Evolution didn't change this. Guys like Magic Johnson and Tom Chambers and Shawn Kemp and Garnett and Nowitzki actually made some people realize that these notions are simply falsehoods.

As for certain guys having to work harder to make it to the NBA. That's nonsense. If anyone has to work harder it's the small guys, not the white guys. Travis Knight sat on his tookus and smoked pot everyday in college. Meanwhile Kevin Ollie was the hardest working human being in the world. Somehow Travis had an easier road to the NBA and millions. Steve Kerr was a one trick pony that had a great jumpshot. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan these are the guys that worked hardest on their games. This idea that David Lee and Steve Kerr and guys like them are the hardest workers is nonsense.

It's really not naive, TMS. People are judged by their actions. Just like every other living being is judged by theirs. Plants, the way they root and grow, are judged by their biological functions. Humans, every race of, are judged by how they behave.
