I think going from one job to the next job into a career sometimes we put ourselves in a position in which we might have missed out on something (whatever your something is).

I feel like I'm in this situation.. I don't especially like what I do (IT work) but I'm 26 and it's what my degree is in. What I really want to do is goto grad school and get my masters and teach elementary school or middle school. This is something I should have just studied in college but my parents were stupid and made didnt want to send me away to school to "be a teacher." So I was laid off in January, was serious about going to grad school and after listening to everyone tell me how it was a dumb idea, I decided to look for a new job in the same field. So now I'm stuck at this job, it's like every other IT job I've had and I dread going to work everyday like I did in the past. Sucks.

I just wanna quit and go back to school like today lol.

noooooo, bitty was saying to take the unemployment money and funnel it back into the economy through UK get-togethers and strip clubs. And if getting Allenfan'ed is a byproduct, so be it.

How many dudes here are on unemployment?

Is that money taxed? If its 425 a week, that's not bad. If i take home 1200 every 2 weeks, thats not that far off.

If I quit, can i still collect unemployment? There is no one here that hates there job as much as me.

I totally think that times like this is when people should take stock and really decide what they want to do. Everyone is going to tell you start look for the next job but sometimes it's worth taking the time to get into what you really want to do. NJ has an alternative teaching program that you could look into. It's for people who didn't formally study education.
Here's a link

http://www.state.nj.us/education/educators/license/alternate.htm and there is Teach for America which provides all kinds of services for Student Loans and Grants.

I forgot to link there website.

This is the time for a change and remember the only person whose opinon matters is yours. At this stage in your life this the time to make changes before you get boggled down with a family or other responsibilities.

You can't collect UIB if you quit so don't quit unless you have some savings to put you through a year and a half.

and for those of you who get fired OR quit, make sure you continue low cost health insurance like COBRA. Look it up if you don't know what it's about.

Thanks for the thoughts Bitty..

I know what I want to do (quit and goto grad school) but it's doing it, that is the hard part. I'd obviously have to pickup part-time work in the meantime, but selling it to my parents is a whole different story. They don't control me, but they do provide me with a place to live. lol.

In Jersey there's Charity Care for uninsured people which covers hospital visits and the Pharmecutical Companies here offer reduced or free medication depending on whether you meet the requirements.

cobra just got a big uptick thru arra to which Supreme should be eligible for. here's a link - from now till 2010 cobra will be much cheaper. this is one of the good things to come out of the stimulus package which actually helps the little people instead of corporate ceo's:

Papabear Says

What ever you do don't give up. Claim that appartment you live in and maybe find something in a different area. There are jobs in the healthcare industry. You may have to take a cut in salary but just keep on keeping on. Like Curtis Mayfield said "Keep On Pushin"
I caught Universal Music sampling one of my hits $$$ by a pretty big artist. Me and My lawyer settled out of court. I need the money now not 4 years from now. At my age people won't give my a second look for a job. When you are over 55 It's like the movie Logins Run.

I've been reading this, thanks everyone. Tough to respond to individual points because I'm not sure of what I actually am going to do, although all this advice has been great. As of right now, my sister is transferring her lease to a cheaper apartment/building, and I'm going to my parents' in Texas for a few weeks. I'm going to think things through and decide what's next there. I'd like to work sooner than later just because I'm used to working and it took me months to find a job. Unemployment numbers are climbing daily. I'm considering learning a trade because I feel like I could get work now if I had that skillset and I'm not sure if I should continue with the financial sector. But that's what I'll think about in Texas.

u have the option of getting it pre-taxed where they take out 20% for federal, or u can collect the full max amount of $430 a week, but u will have to pay taxes on that next year so u'r probably better off getting it taken out automatically... i would get about $365 a week after taxes were taken out, but that was before the recent $25 hike in the benefits payout.

& no, u won't be eligible if u quit... u have to be laid off through no fault of your own (lack of work, etc.) & can't be fired due to disciplinary reasons, etc. to be eligible, in most cases u have to have worked for the same company for 6 months or longer i believe.

Anyone know anything about being an actuary? My training was to be a financial analyst, I sold retirement products (like annuities)... I'm thinking about waiting tables and taking a couple of the tests to see if (1) I'm decent at it and (2) I like it or not. I suppose I could just grab an analyst position, but I'm scared as hell that if the economy, um, underperforms again I'll be in this position again
