Posted by toodarkmark:Posted by sebstar:Posted by toodarkmark: I said that, and I think you took the meaning wrong. I don't think an individual black coach is more qualified that an individual white coach because most of the players are black. I do beleive that in a league where 80% of current players are black(it was higher than that in the 70's 80's and 90's which is where most of current coaches should be coming from-upwards of 90% black league back then) then the pool of qualified coaches that are black is much larger than it is made out to be. I'm willing to listen but haven't heard a valid argument explaining the discrepancy(other than shut up and stop whining about race). Most of the current coaches come from the pool of ex players. If the pool of ex players is 80-90% black, why are so few coaches black? Is it as simple as saying well most of the black ex players aren't qualified? Do we really believe that, or are there other factors? Why are there 3 college football coaches? I think Nalod gave the best answer and I agree with a lot of what he said. Everyone else seem's afraid to broach the topic for fear that a race war will break out. I just hope that people will like me

I believe that a lot of Coaches had fathers who were coaches. Those opporunities weren't there for Black fathers 50 years ago to pass onto their sons. If just for fun we assume that racism officially doesn't exist anymore now that we've got Obama, it still could take 50 years for things to change and "normalize".
I think we are wrong to look at one 6 week period in the NBA and conclude anything. In the last 20 years, the number of non-white coaches has steadily increased. Not all were qualified and many were ex-players. When we get the first non-white Jeff Van Gundy / Lawrence Frank, we will know that we've climbed the mountain. lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Hey Kam, I got one for you..
Mike Brown. Now whether or not you think he's a good coach is up for debate, but I think he fits your mold. "OMG - did we just go on a two-trade-wining-streak?" -SupremeCommander

Bip, Good stuff. The school thing is not just being able to coach. Coaches have to go out in the offseason and mix with Alumni, and give many speaches. They are also motivational speakers and very often are looked upon to raise money. Fund raising is not easy. I would think in a school search for a coach it would want one with a degree and perhaps one that graduated from that school. If a grad rates are less than 100%, say 70%, and even worse for black players, that will take out a big slice. ALso, many coaches are rarely NFL players, but ones that stay on as unpaid graduate assistants to either finish school, or get an MBA in administration. So lets take out race here but say that an undereducated man usually does not have all the communication and people skill that the job requires. The NFL head coach does not need all those skills on top being a good football mind. I can see where there would be more black coaches in the NFL but not in the college game. The more black players that graduate, the larger the pool of qualified candidates will come thru the system. Thats how college coaches become. Remember a few years ago there were firings or guys not taking the job after they were found to have padded their resume to include degrees they did not earn? They lied because the powers that be want these guys to have degrees. Even if a sham (re:"the plantation"), they have to appear to be academically oriented! I don't know if Charles Barkley got his degree from Auburn, but if he ever really wants to be governer, someone is going to look at his transcrips, and the gambling thing will be an issue. If he just wants to be a mouthpiece on TV thats one thing, but enter the arena of politics he will face a whole different set of paremeters by which he will be judged. Auburn, Alabama, Notre Dame, etc, all have ass hole alumni who kick the coaches out on a whim and are not patient. Type A money when emotional acts irractionally. |
