i'm just asking cuz i never watched that many Phoenix games, but how exactly was Barbosa used in D'Antoni's system? i always thought that was the role Jamal was meant to fill in this offense, a guy who can create some shots for others, run the floor & hit the open J... was Barbosa a penetrating into the lane scoring G like Marbury or AI who drew contact & got to the FT line?

Barbosa, has a little better per minute averages, shoots a higher percentage, goes to the hole, and plays better defense.

He doesn't have a slick handle and doesn't get as many highlight plays. Barbosa can catch and shoot, he doesn't need to dribble.

Jamal Crawford is a better ankle-breaker. Barbosa has done his work as the number 5 option on the team.

If Jamal will continue to fear the paint we might as well make him what Q was in Phoenix. Q shot a similar %, if I remember correctly. Just park Jamal behind the arch and don't feature him, just use him as an escape valve. If he's having one of his off nights (or weeks as he goes) then sit him and substitute Q in the role.

While Nate actually is our best 3pt shooter it would be a waste of his penetration skills leaving him outside. Ditto for Gallo, if/when he's healthy.

But while I think this is a sensible proposal to get something useful out of Jamal, if Q were healthy (questionable) I'd still prefer him in the role because there you have a chance of some defense or rebounds on those off nights and weeks.

Thus, Jamal's best use probably is off the bench as a guy you send in to make something happen. But then again, Nate does it better.

Who knows though, we'll probably be seeing a lot of 4 guard alignments, so they can all run around trying to make something happen.

Barbosa was used the way we use Nate, for speed, penetration and the occasional jumper, to back up the one or two.
