--->Listen, this is all about Obama’s race and the resistance some have towards it. .

Umm Obama is the nominee and the national poll leader. Unfortunately in America there is some bias in every pointed direction. I think that when people--especially women hear this lady speak--they will *relate* with her and let's not forget women really have been oppressed since the dawn of time. At the end of the day it's all about who becomes President. I really believe Hillary as VP offered a much easier road for Obama--and lets face it who cares about VP. He took a harder road and McCain has gone with an all or nothing approach here and I think it was a very smart strategy. We'll see what happens. But after hearing this lady speak and I sat there for an hour listening--as Im sure you will find out--this is NO idiot and she's very attractive[and we can say attraction is a non-issue but we'd be lying to ourselves] Will she crash and blow up? Maybe? Will she appeal to millions of Hillary supporters and win over some independent men---perhaps she has a solid chance. Forget any rationale thinking and stick with the basics--most people who vote are not that well-informed. I can just tell from my wife--she went to college for 7 years at Uconn and is no dummy but when it comes to politics she's not in the loop although she votes. Now it seems she is enamored with this woman and actually taking an interest. That is grass rooots first hand level. I have to wonder just how many women are reacting like this who are not die hards in terms of politics. It's all about the votes--everything else is out the window--its a glorified popularity contest

Palin was the first runner up in the miss Alaska beauty pageant. The second runner up was a penguin and third runner up was a walruss. And anyway she did win the Wassilla mayorship, the polar bear vote pushed her over the top.

unfortunately i think this move says one thing and one things only.....

did mccain choose the best potential vp for his staff....i dont think so.
Instead he is like every other politician around and his move is publicity and a popularity contest.

I just hate the fact that this guy is like that. again if mccain goes down would we be comfortable with her as our president?

WTF---her 17 year old daughter is pregnant and McCain knew. What a rollercoaster this is. This is why I think it's insane now to vote for McCain with his bellicose attitude and this women who is just not qualified and has more ??? than need be. This will take back some of the women who might ve been swayed this way--whether people believe it's justified or not--I truly believe the PARENTS have some blame for a female who becomes impregnated before 18[and 18 is way way to young] and on top of it--the 17 year old girl is now going to MARRY the other kid[maybe he's a 37 year old strip club owner?] This is just way to crazy

She definatly has some qualities that make her likable, but the experience issue is concerning. The Govenor of Alaska is a huge step away from VP of the US.

Yeah, are one of those qualities sexual?

palin and family

How old is the oldest daughter? Holy ****

18 maybe. She was 16 in a Dec 4, 2006 photo.

Her name is Bristol.

Have at it, SC,

Sarah Palin announces 17-year-old daughter is pregnant
Mary Altaffer / Associated Press
Bristol Palin, left, holding her infant brother, is expecting a child of her own, the McCain campaign announced.
John McCain's chosen running mate makes the announcement on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, which was scaled back as Hurricane Gustav made landfall.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- As the Republican National Convention prepared to open, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain's choice as his vice presidential running mate, announced that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant and plans to marry the baby's father.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," Sarah and Todd Palin said in a statement issued by the McCain campaign.

"We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

It is unclear how the news will affect the campaign, but it could further endear Palin to the evangelical and conservative Republican base, who had embraced her stance against abortion. A McCain campaign aide said on background that Palin told McCain campaign vetters about her daughter's pregnancy during the vetting process. The aide added that it was a private matter and that the Palins were an extraordinarily close family. McCain has made no comment on the Palins' announcement.

Both campaigns kept an eye on the Gulf Coast today, as Hurricane Gustav made landfall in Louisiana. Barack Obama abandoned his normal stump speech at a Labor Day rally in Michigan. Instead he asked the crowd for a moment of prayer.

"Today is a day for all of us to come together as Americans and send our thoughts and prayers," he said. "I know John McCain wants what's best for the people who have been evacuated. I know George Bush wants what's best for them."

A scaled-back program this evening will feature Cindy McCain and First Lady Laura Bush largely in a fund-raising appeal. Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said the moves were being taken in an effort to "set aside politics and come together as Americans."

Gustav's landfall unleashed a massive federal, state and local response as officials at all levels sought to demonstrate that they had learned from the failures of Hurricane Katrina three years ago. McCain, visiting a relief organization in Waterville, Ohio, won praise from its director for scaling back the first day of the Republican National Convention.

"I want to thank you and I want to thank all the people of the Republican Party," said Linda Greene, director of International Services of Hope facility. "And I'm very thankful -- this is coming from my heart -- for their not squandering a bunch of money like that and that you're actually going to help those people."

She also admonished the media, urging them to "say something positive about why the Republican Party is not having a big hoopla."

Yeah I just read the news. This is bit too much. I wonder what the teen pregnancy rate is up there in their town in Alaska. McCain's judgement has to be seriously questioned. 60 days before an election McCain introduces us to an unknown from Alaska, who had only met once before and says she is his VP choice.

The teen actually tried to hide her stomach from the Ohio rally crowd on Friday with a blanket which ironically which led reporters to pursue the story. The internet blogs were rampant during the weekend about what the teen was hiding. I am not sure if McCain knew or not but it is a bit dishonest for Palin to do that if she is so proud of her daughter. Much like the troopergate "scandal" Palin has shown a willingness to deceive the public. Palin's press release was in reponse to the internet rumors and announced near the moment that Hurricane Gustav made landfall on LA.

The nation has been abuzz today with talk of Sarah Palin, John McCain's surprise vice-presidential pick. The internet and news media exploded in the hours following the announcement.

Along with all the stories making their way through the news cycle is one regarding Trig Palin, her youngest child. Apparently, there has been suspicion, some reported through Alaskan media outlets even before the Vice Presidential buzz, that the child actually belongs to her daughter, Bristol Palin. Normally this would be a personal issue, but this becomes a public matter because of Sarah Palin's stance against abortion and birth control, promoting 'abstinence only' beliefs.

The story seems ludicrious, and surely the GOP workers that vetted her would have stopped McCain from choosing her if anything like this were true. Only, now it has come out that Governor Sarah Palin was not vetted properly. The McCain camp states that they didn't feel it was necessary.

Even if it is entirely false and ludicrous, people are talking about it, and are quite interested in it. It has cropped up on a number of liberal and conservative blogs and sites. One Republican blog pre-empted the rumors, urging people to support Governor Palin "no matter what happens." It is absurd to believe Barack Obama is a Muslim, but that hasn't stopped 10% to 15% of America believing it is true. It remains to be seen if this story will sprout legs. So far, no media outlet has outright disproved the rumor (which should be very easy to do), though the Anchorage Daily News has reported the rumor.

The believers have a few scattered points:

1. Bristol Palin left school for an extended period of time, due to mononucleosis according to her family for the last 4-5 months of Trig's pregnancy. Some classmates claimed later that they had seen Bristol Palin pregnant.

2. Sarah Palin did not reveal to anyone outside her family that she was pregnant until 8 months into her pregnancy. Even then, she showed no signs of pregnancy. Alaskan news outlets commented on this, but did not go further. There are pictures of her at Super Tuesday (just a month before the baby was born).
http://www.adn.com/politics/story/339576.html

She is notably a very trim woman, so it would likely be difficult to hide a pregnancy.

3. There are supposed photos showing Bristol Palin having gained weight, possibly significantly so in the abdomen. I haven't been able to verify these.

4. Sarah Palin went into labor in Dallas just before she was due to deliver a keynote address at the Republican Governors' Energy Conference, and flew to Seattle, then Alaska while still in labor.
http://www.newsminer.com/news/2008/apr/22/palins-flight-labor-falls-under-scrutiny/

Supposedly, she was in labor during the 8 hour flight, and the crew and attendants did not know.
(Quote from the Article Above):

""Governor Palin was extremely pleasant to flight attendants and her stage of pregnancy was not apparent by observation as she didn't show any signs of distress," Boren said."

This is extremely risky behavior, and you are advised by doctors, traditionally, not to fly once you are past 7 months pregnant. If airlines are made aware, sometimes they will prevent you from flying. Sarah Palin did not inform the flight.

5. Sarah has had four children before, and a prolonged labor that lasted a flight from Dallas to Alaska is extremely unlikely, as labor times usually decrease with the number of births.

6. There is also some rumor of an interview with a co-worker of Todd Palin at the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay (North Slope, where Todd Palin worked for BP), though I haven't been able to verify this. The co-worker claims Todd told him of the situation, supposedly.

7. Likewise, there were at the time a few classmates of Bristol's that claimed they had seen her pregnant.

8. Sarah Palin appeared 4 months before the baby's birth in Vogue magazine, and was "trim and lithe." (Searching for photos.)

Now, the counterpoints are that:

-Of course, this is all very far-fetched. Republicans would have vetted her and this would have never slipped past them

-She may not have been showing the pregnancy, despite her trim and slim frame, because of the low birthweight of infants with Downs Syndrome.

-Mothers at 44 (as Sarah Palin is), have an extremely high rate of Downs Syndrome in their children. However, this does not exclude Bristol Palin, as very young mothers also have an increased risk of Downs Syndrome in their children.

The attached photo is Sarah Palin at Super Tuesday (2-05-08), credit to Brian Wallace of the Juneau Empire.

I had another photo of Palin at the Dallas RGEC, but I cannot seem to locate it.

I was hoping you could just clear this matter up. It might make interesting filler, to have a story on what the internet has been talking about!

http://www.spartacuslives.org/node/20463

I don't think McCain vetted this woman at all. I think he wanted Liberman but was talked out of it by his Think Tank.

The crazier conspiracy theory was just something that some folks online tried to put out over the internet. Always seemed a bit far out to me.

BUT:

Did she really go into labor in Texas and then fly to Alaska to deliver her 5th kid? If that is true, she showed some amazingly poor judgment in not going to a hospital after her water broke in Texas and risking delivery on a Jet. (Hell, they don't even give you snacks and blankets anymore- do you think they have the ability to deliver a child??)

Her kid is pregnant- not such a big deal, normally, but when you are the darling of the fundamentalists, are against abortion in any situation, and are probably against birth control and in favor of abstinence, you are held to a higher moral standard. It might also say something about her parenting skills and her ability to communicate with her children.

You know what they say about people who live in glass houses...

You guys need to stop panicking, get it together and start acting like your reaching out for votes. Plain and simple. Sarah is a weak nomination. I watched some of her videos (the one's that aren't slammed) to get a better idea of who she is and she just doesn't carry the strength that Hillary did. We need to capture the Hillary voter. There is no doubt in my mind. Those are the key votes. She won the female vote and the 45 and older vote, across the board.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Yes. By Webster's very definition of dishonestly. McCain should once again fire his top aides because they keep letting him down.

sorry, webster's definition of dishonesty has nothing to do sarah's daughter being pregnant.

in so may words, i was glad to see obama say this is not a political stage to explore, and any one in his campaign that contributed to those blogs would be fired........nice sensitivity on obama's part

Sarah Palin put her family as front and center on Friday on display. It comes with the job that she is seeking. That's why many said it was irresponsible to accept the nomination. The GOP known for dishing it out but not taking it too well.
