the one thing I find hilarious from Obama is the following: He said that everyone should know spanish as a second language. But how about people who come to this country who has to learn english as a second language so you mean to tell me that they have to learn spanish as well as english including their own native language.

Now your microparsing.

Obama's point was that many other country's citizens are multilingual - most of europe, for instance.

And Americans are really lazy when it comes to learning other languages.

We're also very insular, and I think, somewhat self centered.

Then he should say it like it is and now the way he said it.

I think that is what Obama did say:
"I don't understand when people are going around saying, 'We need to have English only.' They want to pass a law 'We want English only.' Now I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English. They'll learn English. You need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language

Lovely, the race card. Vote for Obama or we'll call you a racist. Vote for Obama or you're insecure in your intelligence. I wonder if Obama gets elected he'll put people with the attitude that you have in power. That will unite the country like never before. I don't like McCain, Obama or Clinton but at least McCain and Clinton supporters have some degree of class.

Take people at their word. If they vote for Obama assume they did for his policies and the same goes for McCain.

I don't believe that everyone that votes for McCain is a racist (though it is astounding that Repugs are still able to get votes) but it is also very naive to believe that racism will play apart of this election.

One of the very few guaranteed ways to get me to never ever consider voting for someone is to call anyone who doesn't support them a racist. It betrays a very deep and insidious racism of self-corrosive sort. I'd rather judge someone entirely by who they are than by the color of their skin, pro or con.

Another way to guarantee I won't vote for a candidate is if they or their supporters cling desperately to the notion that anyone who doesn't agree with them must be illogical, have a severly low-IQ, or just be entirely out of touch with reality. Most of the time those who are making that kind of accusation have very poor logic skills and a thoroughly mediocre intelligence themselves. Besides, I really doubt most posters and lurkers on UK really want to get into a pissing contest over any kind of IQ other than basketball-IQ.

All that said, Obama being a better basketball player than McCain is a very big point in his favor.

There will be a lot of people that don't vote for Obama because he's black. There are a lot that will vote for him because he's black. There are a lot that will vote for McCain because he's white. There are a lot that won't because he's old and represents old Washington. No one in this country is naive enough to think that race will not play a part. I haven't heard anyone argue this and beleive most are on the same page. That being said there are millions of people that just want the best president so that they can live a better life. My guess is that this is the majority and they have a million reasons why they think one is a better president than the other. I just think it's ridiculous how so many people discount this and then just immediately assume that anyone that doesn't vote for Barack or does vote for Barack is doing so because of color.

I personally am an independent and refuse to be tied down by the "plantation" on both sides of the political fence. I am 100% for Obama in every sense except for his economic policies. This has given me pause in deciding my vote. But when I tell some that I am considering voting for him the automatic assumption by some is that I am voting for him because I'm black. I find this annoying and insulting. I'm sure there are many who feel the same way when they are called racist when they say they are't voting for Obama.

Republicans at this moment in time, make me sick as they do you. But remember there are many that are doing extremely well under republicans. Many business owners prefer republicans because of their tax policies. I'm a business owner and this is the one area I think is handled a lot better by Republicans. There are other sectors that may prefer other policies. That's the beauty of our country is that we all can have a varied opinion of what is good for us. And no, people aren't stupid if they vote for their own interests(I know you aren't saying this but many have), this is natural. Those "evil business owners" that provide jobs for all of us have every bit of a right to vote Republican as the middle class and poor folk have to vote Democratic. Hopefully the best president wins regardless of party.

The solution to all our problems is to do away with the 2 party system.

Business owners providing jobs to Americans isn't that a bit outdated almost as much the soon to be defunct middle class? A great majority of jobs are either being given to poor illegal immigrants or being shipped oversees. This is a generalization but it is a definite trend that BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS contributed to.

Hey voting for your interest absolutely doesn't make you stupid if someone is working for the defense or oil industry I would have called them a damn fool if they didn't vote for Bush. But where imo the stupidity lies are the voters whose town has been ravaged by big industry shipping jobs oversees and yet their biggest concern is gay marriage. Nope not their local economy, not their health care, nor what kind of educational opportunities their kids will have because these issues pale in comparison to stopping Michael and John from getting married. Those are the stupid people.

I'm with you. You have to vote for your interests and I think there are clearly some that don't for some superficial reason(race, what mommy says, what their friends are doing) or simply because they don't research and don't care. But I think the majority of Americans do vote for their interests. I don't think Americans are as dumb as the world is trying to tell us we are.

As for business owners. The majority of the business owners in the US are small business owners. The majority of them are not outsourcing their jobs and are providing the country(despite our recent problems) with the highest standard of living in the world. Business owners are not just the "evil corporate CEO's" that we hear about so often.

You've also got to realize that there are two kinds of republicans- GW & Karl Rove's Republicans vs. your traditional republican.

One was fiscally conservative- the other (GW's brand) has spent as much money as any Democrat, just on their own pet projects (IRAQ et al)

Some Democrats have gotten into the fiscal conservative area - such as Bill Clinton.

The reality is whoever is elected is going to have one hell of a time having to confront a lot of problems (Debt, Energy, Iraq, China & Russia).

Me personally I think the opposite. Obama is a legit presidential candidate he's not some random black guy running for president. It's not like someone saying "oh you must love rap music and fried chicken". And you know what the people who say flat out that they are voting for McCain are probably not voting for him strictly only on race (maybe they are die-hard republicans, pro-war etc) it's the people who say Obama would be a great president in public but behind closed doors and in the voting both are singing an entirely different tune.
