I'm no tax expert, but wouldn't the players have to pay taxes to the Greek government?

Yeah, I don't know why everyone keeps claiming "tax-free" like its some kind of fact.

good.. I hope they do go. I hope Deng, OK4, KG, etc all go there. Eventually Zach will make the all star game if enough of those guys bolt

I look at the state of this country after 8 years and it makes me sick. No twin towers, Bin Laden stil at large, we bomb the middle east, gas (coincidentally) goes up to $4.50 the dollar is sinking like a lead zeppelin, banks are tanking from the mortage crisis but its all OK because the government sent me a check for $900 so I could do my part to stimulate the economy.

Assholes

On a side note that money went to 3 drinking binges, a day at the racetrack and a rub and tug... just so you guys know I did my part (to help the economy that is)

mike, we gotta hang.

the exchange rate right now is lucrative. So there is that. As for the taxes I am not sure.. but I am under the impression that there are significant breaks for non residents and equally crafty ways to move or access your offshore accounts that equate to some pretty major savings.

It's true--the teams take care of the taxes for the players as well as living expenses

Childress leaving Hawks to join Greek franchise

Restricted free agent confirms signing with Olympiakos of Greece

"It's official, I just signed," Childress said by phone Wednesday morning from Athens, where he and agent Jim Tanner will be until Friday. "I think it was . . . a situation where I didn't know who to expect coming in, coming over to Athens. But it's a great city and a great organization. They do whatever they can to make you feel at home."

The deal is the most lucrative current contract in European basketball and the biggest in Euroleague history. It's also another step in the globalization of the game, a trend that got a huge boost recently when the top-rated U.S. high school player, California native Brandon Jennings, opted for a contract with an Italian team over playing at Arizona.

good deal for childress, but honestly, I don't see how this is a big step in the globalization of the game, a lot of americans who don't make the NBA play overseas, a lot.. childress is a role player at best, and now he is getting paid good money overseas... good for him... In the grand scheme, this is just another average NBA player going overseas..... nothing new...

I disagree slightly. Usually, its the American players who can't make an NBA roster that venture overseas to play. Childress is a legit NBA player and can start on some of the teams in this league. But I do agree, that the Childress signing wont do much to globalize the game.

Childress is not a player who didn't make a team!!! He gets major minutes in the NBA so for him to go to Greece ( My Team by the Way Thrill le Ole) rather then the NBA it shows players they have options. If more players start realizing that the Euro is worth double the dollar it could become a trend.

and that is debatable, but the key is, can he start for teams that have the room to sign him? what is his market value... guys like gordon, deng, okafor have a set value so far, they were offered deals in the 50mil range.. who even offered josh childress a contract that the hawks could match? this all would not be an issue had some team came to him with a full MLE, but honestly, I don't think the interest was there. Josh is a good player, but by NBA standards, pretty average, he does some things well, but nothing great.... He is replaceable, and Greece for him is probably his best financial option..

Can we trade ATL Josh's older brother JJ-Lips....man they have a lot in common (resemble each other, both weigh 130 lb, both have horrific offensive games).

Josh Childress isn't a versatile offensive player, but he picks his spots amd shoots a nice percentage all around. He's pretty efficient. Jared Jefferies is a human disaster area.

Terry as much and you analyze things, I find it hard for even you not to see a trend potentially going on here.

What could very well happen is middle of the road guys like Childress and Highschool superstars goes overseas and that opens the door for more(star players) euros to come over and play in the NBA. That in itself could start a globalization trend going both ways.

listen to yourself...Americans have been going overseas for years, years!!! this does not start a trend, but continues a trend of average to mediocre NBA players going abroad... Euro stars have always come to the NBA.. this is nothing NEW!!!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute, guys who go over seas go because they can;t make an NBA final roster and the NBDL doesn't pay enough.

So the guys who are going over there now are guys who CAN make NBA ROSTERS.

WHAT JENNINGS IS DOING COULD VERY EASILY SEND MANY PLAYERS WITH BAD SAT's overseas, considering how bad the highschool curriculim is in many inner city schools..
