I think you are right on with your assessment. I think the other troubling things are that this move implies that Dolan is as involved as he was in the past. I also think that D'Antoni is going to burnout quick. Most coaches who have had the kind of run he has had need a year off because they are so into their job and it is so intense. It certainly will be intense for him once he is in NY. My biggest problems with the hire is that it is the same thing with a new pres. and that it appears again that rebuilding will not be happening.

Boy, you anti D'Antoni people will say anything' to bash this move, before it even got started. The guy hasn't even sign yet!

In a few years, I'm gonna be laughing my ass off on this board, reminding people of how clueless they've been about what the hell we been needing on this team. I believe we will be back in playoff contention in two years and no one's going to be bashing him anymore. I truly believe that our young cats will be thriving under D'Antoni soon enough. You'll see.

Nobody is saying that the Knicks won't win more games with D'Antoni. Most of us "Anti-D'Antoni people" think he'll get them to the playoffs sooner rather than later. But at what cost? No true rebuild but a short cut to mediocrity? No thanks.

What exactly is a 'true rebuild'? Any improvement at this point is a big plus. One step at a time. Don't wish or want so much, so fast! isiah tried that and it failed. Let's do it right this time.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Your stance with Isiah was well placed but right now you are on 100% speculation. we haven't seen one move made and haven't seen one draft under Walsh and D' Antoni. Can't you put your blinders away until you have evidence of what direction the Knicks are going in. right nowyou are just hating on the Knicks for no reason they are trying to do the right thing but in your eyes I know you have seen a lot that is wrong, they always do the wrong thing. The Knicks right now aren't doing anything wrong at this momnent in time.

Your totally right and the 100% speculation is a good word for what's going on here. D'Antoni hasn't even signed the damn contract yet.

Why are people so hung up on interpreting rebuilding as winning 15 games each year with a no name coach? Why is that the ONLY route to take? How is bringing in two accomplished professionals with winning pedigrees a bad thing under any circumstance?

Im tempted to surmise a few things, that its just internet 'I know best' bravado, or the drama queen syndrome that has infected this board, or perhaps just bitterness over the Isiah/Layden/Brown debacle that has defined this decade. In any event, I havent read anything from the detractors that is even remotely tangible when it comes to predicting how this marriage will shake out.

People keep trying to cap and bottle potential success; you want to put yourself in a position to win a championship. Nothing is guaranteed, and there is no one right answer when it comes to righting this ship. Had a ball bounced a certain way for the Suns, or a call or two gone their way, then we are definitely talking about hiring a championship winning coach.

Thats all I can ask. We develop a good system and put in the right players and we let the chips fall where they may. There is no telling how the NBA landscape will look like in a few years and how the paradigms will shift. At least we will be in position to take advantage.

Besides, do we even have our 2010 pick?

The way I see it is just take care of the cap at all times and go after the best (proven) people you can get and you'll always be alright.

How many times do I have to sight other successful championship dynasties in doing exactly what I just described, to make that point clear to everyone? Apparently, no enough.

Very good post by the way sebstar.

Just want to say that I wasn't for D'Antoni as first choice but can accept it based upon his success both with Phoenix and Europe. he, at least, has earned the right to show that he can develope a winning mindset here. He has had some success with Marbury and maybe, just maybe can increase his market value as a player rather than just an expiring contract.

Secondly, a comment was made that Jackson was a bad defensive player and while there is some truth to the statement, the fact is that he played defense up to his physical limits. He was slow but physically strong and while defense requires speed and quickness which were never Jackson's strong suit he used smarts, strength and toughness to offset his deficiencies. He worked at defense even though it was never a natural strength.

While the coaching job is apparently D'Antoni's, I would like to see Jackson get the GM slot and study under Walsh for a few years.

It's tough watching the younger teams in the league come of age while we are still playing the same game from Dolan's playbook...One would have thought the noise made/being made by New Orleans, Atanta, and Utah would have clued in this organization on the virtues of rebuilding...Apparently not...
One can only hope now this is part of a grander plan being orchestrated by Moses Stern...He did wonders for Boston and L.A....By the way, no one can ever convince me those trades were legit...Can the Knicks be far behind...

WTF....How did you interpet all of that before the man even signed on the dotted line? So if we hired Joe Nobody would that signal a rebuild? Walsh has 30 years of BB experience and I highly doubt he would put his intergrity on the line to be a puppet to James Dolan.

D'Antoni offers a blueprint for Walsh to follow as he rebuilds. How about we quit specualting (as someone mentioned) and let this play. Walsh hasn't even made one player/personel move yet.

Yeah, yeah. And isiah was supposed to be great behind the lines, just because he was a great player. Learn the first time will ya? Don't make the same mistake twice.

I don't think anyone thought that Isiah was going to be great as a coach. I think the thought was that he had created a roster he supposedly had a vision for and he should coach it. The Knicks were already paying two hall of fame coaches who had been hired to work with Isiah's guys why should they pay someone else. Isiah's greatest fault was that he was always looking to make the biggest splash either through a trade or the draft. There was never any global thought on how to build a team for the future. I am not sure that there is any now. The D'Antoni hire is a big splash hire that I think will not work out and follows the path the organization has been taking. Doc Rivers sucked as a coach until he had KG. Is he a great coach now? D'Antoni won 23 games the year before Isiah relieved his team of Marbury and gave them the cap freedom to sign Nash. Nothing like that is going to happen in NY.

Yes, but Walsh is running things now and we are only two years away from having some flexibility in our cap and a real shot at LeBron. That is more to look forward to and to wait for that, rather then what we just got done going through isiah, is well worth the wait.

Plus suckbury is gone after next year, so there's all kinds of scenarios/options at our feet now. Donnie's just gotta figure out which one's to take.

isiah's biggest mistake was leaving his best position. And I said this before it all got torn apart. He should've remained the GM and only' the GM. That obviously was his best strength.

You are 100% correct. This is just more of the same old ****.

This is no different than acquiring Zach Randolph last summer, just because he was a big flashy name with "stats" who became very available.

Big name...check

Looking for the most money...check

Unwanted from his last stop...check

Bad fit...check

Continue Isiah's misguided attempt to build the Suns East...check

Be entertaining enough to sell tickets and lose in the 2nd rd every year with no realistic chance at contending for championships...check

Starphuck...double check

They'll never be lucky enough to acquire the kind of talent that D'Antoni had to work with in Phoenix. At best you're looking at the Warriors and Nuggets. Think the Rick Pitino Knicks but without a franchise center. D'Antoni relies on the run and gun to cover up the fact that his teams are poor defensively and don't execute well in the half court. That's a recipe for entertainment, not championships.

D'Antoni is a bad fit and it's sad that some Knicks fans are so desperate that they can't or refuse to see it.

This is a total Isiah and Dolan move. Walsh is proving that he's here for the money and doesn't mind being a puppet. Isiah wants to be the Phoenix Suns of the East and Dolan wants to get big names here to keep their season ticket holders and sell tickets. Keep being suckers. That's exactly what they want.

THrough all the ranting and raving, he actually was right. MDA is looking like a real bad hire right now. I just don't see how you could bring that guy back if we don't get Lebron or Bosh. Any team without those team is going to need to really focus on defense to win, and MDA seems incapable of getting these guys to play defense.

When your best players won't defend how can any coach make his team better defensively? DLee refuses to consistently help defend. All over the roster we have guys that are laterally challenged and that's been the case since MDA got here. If you bring in guys that love to defend and MDA says I need you to do xyz they'll do it and all of a sudden he's a better defensive coach.

Boston sucked on D but then they add KG and when their Best player says play harder on D the rest follow his example and execute what the coach teaches. Who do we have on this team that can do that among the players?
When Amare went down and MDA had Diaw and KT that team was still able to win 54 games and get to the WCF. He at least had someone willing to defend inside. We won't have to be a juggernaut on D to win big with his system and better players.

And why doesn't D'Antoni hold Lee accountable, like he did, let's say Robinson? Hmmmm.

And is you haven't realized yet, defense is not stressed in a D'Antoni gameplan.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

People keep saying that but even if he "stressed it" what diff would that make? Tell me when did DLee ever defend inside? We never saw this even under a defensive guru like LB! You bring in Lead players that will show pride and toughness and demand the same from their teammates and have the coaches back then you'll see a difference.

Right now we have to look at the make up of the team and remember that this likely won't be the team we see next year and beyond. DW's job will be to put together a roster built to win. Built with more two way players and more toughness inside. His teams in the past had that and I fully expect him to do the same here. This two yr nightmare is almost over. DW has faith in MDA and his job is to give him the best roster he can to get the job done.

MDA has his faults but coaching talented teams isn't one of them. I don't understand why fans are so worried about MDA when it's been proven time n again that good teams will win even if they have a lame coach, but a good coach can push them further. Mike Brown held his team back in a playoff situation. I don't think MDA would be as lost. MDA won a playoff series down 3 games and that is probably one of the hardest things to do. There's no margin for error. He lost his 2nd best player and bigman but cobbled together a few career journeymen and won 54 games and went to the WCF. A Mike Brown type of coach couldn't do that. I know MDA has looked awful but this has been a freaked up situation and as many feared players
on last yr contracts can be selfish and not team oriented. No matter how much a coach screams the players have to WANT to do it.

I repeat when did DLee ever defend? LB couldn't get these players to defend consistently. Now that DLee is pretty much the lone bigman he still won't go hard and his low fouls show how little he's trying to help. Tho he's had a few more blocks it's more about consistency over the entire game. Very few of these players have defended hard. It's not about the coach at a certain point. You think that after coming into camp mostly talking about D and then constantly reading and being questioned about the lack of D, that the coaches aren't stressing D? It's been a major topic this entire year.

There are no Ben Wallace, Bruce Bowen or Marcus Camby types on the team but I bet DW will make sure there are next yr.

The more things change, the more they stay the same..The presumptive D'Antoni hire..
