D'antoni - his style doesn't translate to a championship?????????

that's like some fat kid with a face full of zits who hasn't gotten laid in 10 years saying NO to a reasonably hot chick saying "well, she's not Jessica Alba"

D'antoni the coach.....he is one of the best in the world. Donnie Walsh has talked about getting Jax a top assistant if he was to get hired.......so why wouldn't there be a converation about D'antoni getting a defensive guru?

Again Donnie has always drafted 2 way players.......I think this scenerio could work.

Yeah, I don't think you understand. You build a team to win a title, not to get into the playoffs only to prematurely ejaculate at the last second.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

1. The Knicks could not possibly be thinking championship right now. It would be like my 1 year old setting aside $$ for retirement.

2. The assumption that D'antoni cannot win a championship & Mark Jax (or Avery Johnson) is littered with nonsense.

Who said anything about right now. Mike D'Antoni's style stinks plain and simple. The team he had all these years should have at least been to one championship but he hasn't done anything of note there playoff wise. His style is exciting but not a winning brand, as the Warriors can also attest to.

But as Alan Hahn said in his blog today:
But we know how much Garden chairman James Dolan loves big names and, even if he personally likes Mark Jackson, Dolan knows D'Antoni is a marquee name and knows D'Antoni plays a very entertaining style. Never mind the idea that the current Knicks roster doesn't fit the style...and we've already seen the result of an easygoing coach who doesn't practice a lot and leaves it up to his players to police themselves.

Ugh.

My point exactly.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

You're not looking to win a championship right now but you better be thinking about a championship when you start this rebuild. Not just being entertaining and looking to sell tickets. That's a Dolan and Isiah move and hiring D'Antoni would have their fingerprints all over it.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

You want to hire Mark Jackson who hasnt done anything. Mike has won games in the league, and is widely respected. This team isnt built for anyone and will have to be tore down.

I've been skeptical of Walsh every since his PC. He made it clear during the PC he wants the team to be competitive for the next 2yrs and if you hear the message behind the message it's marinated in "Make The Playoffs" and "If We Have To We May Sacrifice A More Strategic Plan To Rebuilding To Accomplish This".

Now do I believe DW can put a plan together to get us in the playoffs within the next 2yrs...Yes I do but I don't want this if it's at the expense of better planning only reaping us Denver Nugget like rewards.

D'Antoni and his stinky style as you call it should have won a championship last year if not for Horry's dirty play. D'Antoni and his stinky style have registered top flight records while competing in the tough west. He lost to the eventual champs about three times. No shame in that.

BTW, the warriors haven't done anything on the level as D'Antoni.

Then why haven't the rockets won? or the jazz? I understand the term "Defense wins" but in this league you have to score, and scoring in the playoffs is not easy. The key is getting defensive stops when they count.....

Uh, what? Why have the Spurs been so successful? Why has any team really gone far into the playoffs all these years? We all know why. It's been known for years. Defense wins championships and the Suns proved that during D'Antoni's time there.

The game has changed greatly in the past 15 years. The NBA is clearly more geared to a more offensive minded type game this is exhibited in the officiating that done, to the style that players employ, and the absence of any true gritty defense. I think some Knick fans have the idea in their head of the 90's Knick teams. That style of play just would not work because they would be in constant foul trouble or suspended every other night. Uncontested dunks, open jumpers, dribbling exhibitions, now reign supreme in the NBA game. So yes a style like D'Antoni has been and could be very successful in the NBA. And we as fans should also keep in mind that we've had some of the worst records a franchise could have and so for us to turn our noses up at a coach that has won multiple 50 games and even 60 game seasons is pretty ridiculous.

The game has not changed in that aspect. Teams that are playing defense are the ones that are reaching the Finals. The game has changed in a way that allows those teams like the Suns and Warriors to be successful but come playoff time it's a whole new ballgame. Just ask D'Antoni.

The Lakers are the 4th highest scoring team in the league 108 pts per. The Lakers give up 101 pts to their opponents which ranks 21st in the league. Somehow, the still managed to grab the number 1 seed in the west and seem to be on their way to the championship.

The Spurs give up 90pts per which ranks them 3rd defensively, yet they are getting run out of the series against the Hornets. The Hornets who seem to be on the verge of a meeting with the Lake-show in the conference finals, give up 46% fg to their opponents which is actully worse than what the Suns gave up (45%). As TKF said, to win in this league, you have to score. You just need to get stops when you need to get them similar to the Lakers and Celtics of the 80's.

Man, this is annoying.

Forget the Lakers, they have a guy named Kobe Bryant.

The Spurs are an old team. They already won their titles. Their slowness is catching up with them, especially against a team like the Hornets, one of the most athletic in the NBA if not the most. The Hornets also play their share of defense and a guy named Chris Paul.

"You just have to get stops when you need to."

Yeah...no.

To be able to get those stops, you have to be in the game. You don't just wait till the end to play defense. The game isn't only about defense but a lot of guys can score the basketball. It's the the team that plays defense that wins the trophy. Ask Riley, Brown, Popovich, even Phil or anyone else who has been there.

Game hasn't changed too much in that aspect, it's the people who will accept anything that is given to them that hasn't changed. If Isiah made this hiring, people would be pissed.

With the exception of Brown, what do Riley, Pop, and Phil have in common? They all had the best players in the league on thier side when they won the 'Chip'. Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Magic, Michael were all MVP's at one point in their career's.

So lets cut the fancy dressings and get to the heart of the artichoke. Doesn't really matter who is coaching, D'Antoni, Phil, Riles, or what style, showtime Lakers, slow-ball Spurs, If you dont have one of the best players in the league, you aint winning a 'Chip'.

Detroit the team that is considered one of the best in the NBA has for the past 2 seasons been all but run out of the playoffs. D'Antoni has lost to teams that went on to represent the West in the NBA Finals so that is hardly is dramatic underachievement.
