I'd rate him good, but I don't see the use in critiquing him for not drafting 3-4 starters from pick no.20 on, which I think is from whence this argument stemmed.

Then you and I are in agreement.

But there are people who think Isiah is a Great drafter, or a Genius. I think you need better than borderline starters for that.

Back to "good"... lets remember back in the day, Layden was considered a good drafter too for getting guys like Shandon and Eisley late in the draft (lefts forget about Malone and Stockton since there was too much overlap with his father to know who was more responsible). They stayed in the league a long time too, but in retrospect, who cares? They were good picks relative to their draft slots, but not very good players -- and that may end up the case with the brunt of Isiah's kids too.

layden's last pick for utah was ak47 late in the first round.

He also got Bryon Russell in the second round.

VDesai I think you are missing my point completely. You keep coming back to me criticizing Isiah when I'm not. What I'm saying is the following:

We are 6-15.
Half of our draft picks don't play even though we stink
The ohter half are role players
Do those that don't play really stink? IF they can't play for us who can they play for?
Is the GM sabotoging himself by keeping good draft picks on the bench?

I asked two questions there. One indicates that he has not really had good drafts and we are overhyping. The other indicates that he has done a good job drafting but has not utilized their talent. How you answer the question is how you feel.

I personally don't know. I can't say Mardy or Wilson or Renaldo or Morris are good players because they never play.

I think from seeing Renaldo play I think he should be the starting SF of this team. Even the numbers bear that out.

I think Isiah is a special person who doesn't play his draft pickscause he payed a lot to veterans who are blocking them, not because of anything they've done. As my original answer stated- all this is telling me is that you have a bad coach and a GM that overpaid for players to block his draft picks.

To me it doesn't say anything about the draft picks, who except for the most recent ones who haven't yet had the opportunity, have flashed good talent.

If Isiah acquired Dwight Howard in the draft it wouldn't matter what veteran was in front of him. He would play. Our rookies clearly haven't distinguished themselves from the vets.

Again, that's comparing apples to oranges. When has Isiah been in a position to acquire a Dwight Howard type talent when he hasn't trade away his pick. At no.8, when the picked Frye, there was no Dwight Howard talent left behind.

I think Balkman and Lee in particular have long distinguished themselves from the vets ahead of them, but we're talking $25 million a year and 2 lotto picks invested in Curry and Randolph and around $15 mil a year at one position ahead of Balkman.

When Isiah drafts for best available athlete, he's fine (Nate, Balkman and Lee). When he drafts for basketball skill, he's really lacking (Frye, Collins and Chandler?).

agreed... 1 of the reasons i'm very wary of how he's gonna use that top lottery pick we're bound to get this year.

are you guys saying nate lee balkman chandler morris frye and collins have no skill
tmac mighty mouse camby
do your home work

i was more eluding to my concern over how he's going to use that lottery pick this year... i don't want the most athletically gifted player on the board necessarily... what i want is the guy who has the most polished all around game & has the best leadership qualities that can really fill a need on this team... if he also happens to be an athletic freak, all the better, but i wanna draft based on skillset & hoops IQ first, then physical ability second.

hope that clarifies that for u.

btw, i haven't done any homework since my HS days.

So in summary: Isiah Thomas is a solid player assessment guy who for the most part finds guys that won't be busts but doesn't know how to work the draft to get a top of the line player. I think that's fair. Good talent assessor. Poor GM. Poor team builder
