Gagne was named. As were several prominent former Red Sox like Damon, Clemens and Mo Vaughn.

However Gagne was the only one named among current Boston players, which suprising considering the girth of some of those guys.

I thought Gagne's name had been put out there independently of Mitchell's report?

Was Damon officially named?

Clemens and Vaughn are so far removed from the Red Sox and their alleged steroid use was done after they left Boston.

I'm sorry I guess Damon was not named.

Gagne was DEFINITELY named as was Brendan Donnelly. Gagne's reciepts are in there!

Here is an exceprt about Donnelly:

"In considering whether to trade for Donnelly in 2007, Red Sox baseball
operations personnel internally discussed concerns that Donnelly was using performance
enhancing substances. In an email to vice president of player personnel Ben Charington dated
December 13, 2006, Zack Scott of the Red Sox baseball operations staff wrote of Donnelly: “He
was a juice guy but his velocity hasn’t changed a lot over the years . . . If he was a juice guy, he
could be a breakdown candidate.”427 Kyle Evans of the baseball operations staff agreed with
these concerns, responding in an email that “I haven’t heard many good things about him, w[ith]
significant steroid rumors.”428"

So Donnelly had his name dragged through the mud based on nothing but heresy?

This report is going to get killed by the Player's Association, and deservedly so, when they have their press conference at 6pm.

Bud Selig is just patting Mitchell and baseball on the back now.

Talk about a dog and pony show.

This whole thing seriously stinks.

Theo Epstein, Eric Gagne and the Boston Red Sox: A Match Made in Muck Heaven
By Spencer Ackerman - December 13, 2007, 2:52PM

The fallout from George Mitchell's 409-page report (pdf) into baseball's Steroids Era (Mitchell's words) is yet to fully drop. We're still combing the report for the most explosive revelations -- no big surprise that Yankee greats Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte juiced -- but for now, this Yankee fan wants to bring you his moment of schadenfreude. To wit: the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox. According to Mitchell, Sox general manager Theo Epstein acquired flop reliever Eric Gagne nearly a year after learning of serious circumstantial evidence of Gagne's steroid use.

Gagne and Paul Lo Duca were teammates in Los Angeles from 1999 to 2004. During that time, Gagne used Lo Duca, who went on to a beloved career catching for the Mets (sorry, Paul), as his hook-up to steroid and human-growth hormone pusher Kirk Radomski. The Red Sox scouted Gagne, once a valuable relief pitcher, after the 2006 season, when Epstein began overhauling the Sox pitching staff. Yet a certain concern lingered. On November 1, 2006, Epstein emailed his scout, Mark Delpiano, "Have you done any digging on Gagne? I know the Dodgers think he was a steroid guy. Maybe so. What do you hear on his medical?"

Delpiano replied:

Some digging on Gagne and steroids IS the issue. Has had a checkered medical past throughout career including minor leagues. Lacks the poise and commitment to stay healthy, maintain body and re invent [sic] self. What made him a tenacious closer was the max effort plus stuff.

Yet the Sox picked up Gagne from the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline during the 2007 season. What does that say about Epstein's commitment to a steroid-free championship team?

Sour grapes from a Yankee fan? Yeah, guilty as charged. But if there's a silver lining here, it's that Gagne, a juicer, stunk, and a certain thoroughly-unlikeable-but-steroid/HGH-free slugger is going to redeem baseball's holiest record.

seriously, the guy's acting like he had no clue that this was going on over his tenure... all of a sudden he's the crusader against roid use... it took government intervention to get the guy to finally commission an investigation into the matter... freakin' hypocrite

Any Red Sox players on the list?

This report is ridiculously biases against NY players. Aside from BALCO and other widely publicized cases, the 2 people who provided Mitchell with most of the "evidence" were closely associated with the Mets and the personal trainer of 2 high profile Yankees.

The fact that Mitchell couldn't get any help from people associated with any other teams makes the findings selective at best and disingenuous at worst.

Eric Gagne, Mo Vaughn and a couple others but not many.

As you said there is a reason why it was biased towards the Yanks, Mets- its cause of the sources.

Boston did a good job of shutting their people up.

I'm sure it helped that one of their own was leading the investigation.

I wonder if Mitchell will get a nice little bonus when he starts receiving paychecks again from the Red Sox.
I heard that even Joe Torre made the list!

no one is beyond suspicion at this point... even supposedly "clean" players have doubts surrounding them now... there's no way in hell that Selig didn't know full well what was going on all these years... hearing him try to take the credit for his "idea" to start this commission to investigate is absurd.

Q: What do Varitek, Ortiz, Ramirez and Mitchell all have in common?

A: They all work for and receive paychecks from the Boston Red Sox.

Not that hard to believe.

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa are NOT listed in this report. How seriously can anyone take it?

I have a problem with this report naming names in an admittedly incomplete list and the seeming lack of evidence used to name them. I think it's incredibly irresponsible for MLB to be supporting this.

I'm happy of the news Baseball is overrated by it's fans and the media in this country and if any sport needed to take a huge blackeye or have a deep gash cut reopened baseball is the most deserving.

How is Griffrey Jr. not on the list?

just because players aren't on the list doesn't mean they haven't used... hell, Sammy Sosa's name wasn't on the list either & neither was Rafael Palmeiro or Mark McGwire.

I don't like baseball, but how can a sport be "overrated"? Its a matter of taste.

At the end of the day who cares as long as they make money, if these guys want to destroy their bodies for a few pick years, it should not be a reflection on the rest of the players who do not use anything.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?
