• Don't expect to see a Twins-Red Sox or Twins-Yankees whopper. The sense is now that Minnesota will hold onto Johan Santana.

That would be great news considering how concerned I was about Boston getting Johan.

Twins can't keep Johan. They can say it all they want, but if they do they are really just f---ing themselves.

Twins will get Lirano back next year, and with Delmon Young in the OF will not be that bad of a team. With Johan they can compete a little.

If they are out of contention they will deal Johan at the deadline. If not they'll collect a first rounder and a sandwich pick for him.

Twins have no shot with Indians and Tigers in their division. It makes no sense to hold him, Twins are getting better offers than the 1st+sandwich pick. If they wait until deadline they will get even less value than is being offered, they must trade him prior to the season.

"According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees turned down a trade for Johan Santana that would have sent Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez and Mitch Hilligoss to Minnesota."

I don't get it. A rotation of Santana/Wang/Pettite as the top 3 would be great. Good enough to lock down a playoff series and to compete with boston's pitching. Aren't the yanks built to win now considering the ages of most of their key positional players? It's not like they are selling the future in this deal, just 1 guy basically. Or maybe the yanks have finally reached their financial limit, not wanting to re-sign santana and a CFer when they've committed to around $500mil already this offseason

if that's true, i don't get it either... who were they thinking they should give up? Chase Wright? Matt DeSalvo? Marquez & Hilligoss are 2nd tier prospects... how can guys like that be a dealbreaker for Johan? I have a hard time believing this is true.

they will get 2 draft picks back from whatever team signs Johan... the Yankees cashed the 2 picks they got back from the Phillies for Tom Gordon & turned them into Joba Chamberlain & Ian Kennedy... if they use those picks wisely, they may be able to salvage something good out of all this... i agree, it's in their best interest to trade him for prospects who are somewhat proven, but at this point if the Yankees have pulled out of it & the Red Sox are only willing to give up Lester & 2nd tier prospects for him, they really have no other choice but to keep him & try to contend next season.

i don't see why Johan would agree to being traded at the deadline... he'd have already taken the risk of injury by playing out half the year... why should he then do any favors to the Twins? just like Jorge & Mariano decided to test the free agent waters as soon as the season started, so will Johan IMHO.

Bill Smith played this one terribly. He got played by Boston, pretending that they were really in this to make a trade for Santana instead of just looking to up the price for the Yankees. Boston had no intention of making a trade for Santana unless they would accept a low ball offer. If they gave Santana $23-25M a year for 6-7 years, what were they gonna say when Beckett came to renegotiate with a championship that he won them in his pocket? Add Dice-K and there's no way they were going to pay $60M a year for 3 starters.

The Twins had the best offer that they were going to get for Santana when the Yankees relented and offered Hughes. Nobody else could offer a top end starter prospect like that and still pay Santana what he wanted. Smith got cute and couldn't pull the trigger because he misread the market.

Santana might still get traded but it won't be for a package as good as the Yankees were offering.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

looks like the Dodgers just signed Andruw Jones... that opens up the possibility of them trading Kemp in a package to get a frontline starter... maybe they're about to get involved in the Johan sweepstakes... this is 1 of the teams that i always thought had the talent to match any offer the Yankees or Red Sox could offer.

Dodgers Sign Andruw Jones

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 1:14am: The salary structure to Jones' deal is interesting: $9MM in '08, $15MM in '09, and a $12MM signing bonus. That setup could make Jones much more tradeable if the need arises.

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:23am: Tony Jackson has a hunch that the Dodgers will now trade Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier in a package for a frontline starter.

The dodgers could certainly do it. Kemp and Kershaw would likely get it done right now.

i don't think they'd be scared off by Johan's salary either... think about him in the same rotation w/Penny, Lowe & Billingsley... that's a powerhouse rotation right there filled w/3 veteran horses that Torre can abuse to his heart's content.

an offer of Kemp & Broxton has to get the Twins' attention... it certainly trumps what the Red Sox currently have on the table.

But I wonder whether Dodgers would rather have Bedard since he'd cost less money.

how much less are we talking though? u have to figure he'll want at least a Barry Zito level contract or close to it... i know Johan wants $25 mil per but there's no way he's gonna get it, especially now that the Yankees are no longer involved in the trade discussions for him... he's gonna have to wait til free agency then if he wants to collect on a contract like that, & that means he has to risk being injured or having a bad season this year.

I don't think the Dodgers are scared of money right now. They have around an $80mil payroll and can afford much more than that. They could probably afford both Bedard and Santana in contracts and young talent.
