LOL. yeah, like Met fans weren't gizzing all over themselves when the Wilpons brought in high priced toys like Pedro, Delgado, Beltran in recent years... i love how you Met fans always cry foul everytime the Yankees bring in a high priced FA & then proclaim yourselves the champions of the world everytime some bigname FA joins your team... such hypocrites you are!
When we brought in Pedro and Beltran, we really had no high priced players. Piazza was in the last year of his contract and on his way out. The only other 10 plus million dollar player on the Mets was Glavine at 10.7 mil. Then the following season we traded for Delcrapo and LoDuca. Also brought in Wagner. However, salaries we lost were Piazza 16, Cameron 7.3, Trachsel 6.7, Benson 5.3. Plus a few others which total around 10 million. (maybe more) So thats about 45 million in lost salaries. Pedro 14, Beltran 13.5, Delcrapo around 11.5 after subtracting 2 mil from Marlins, LoDuca 6.5, Wagner 10.5. So that totals about 55 mil. For around 10 million more, the Mets were able to substantially increase the talent on the roster. But as you can see below, our total payroll actually went down since 2003! And this years opening day payroll was only 108 million after you factor in the money we received for Green and Delcrapo.

In the NL the Mets weren't even the highest salaried team on opening day. That would be the Dodgers at around 117 mil after you factor in all payroll obligations to players they traded away.
Dodgers 117
Mets 108
Cubs 101
Then you had the Braves, Giants, Cardinals, and Phillies at 90 million.
American League
Yankees 191
Red Sox 143
Angels 118
Mariners 108
White Sox 100
Tigers 97
Orioles 89
BlueJays 88

The Yankees are 50 million more than the next highest team and 70 million more than the Angels!! The Mets are within 20 million of 6 other NL teams. 50 million would put them in range of almost every NL team. And 70 million would put them in range of every NL team. Point is, the Mets are playing on an even playing field with at least 2 other teams and pretty much an even playing field with the 4 teams at 90 million. The Yankees on the otherhand are playing on an even playing field with NOBODY!! And after the Yankees signed Clemens, they were 110 million more than the White Sox at 100 mil!! Thats more than the Mets ENTIRE payroll!!!!!!!! Holy ****!!!!! Thats basically 2 whole teams and they still couldn't get past the first round!!!!!!
