"anywhere near" does not qualify as informed analysis nor does it have any rationale to back it up
Do you really need a rationale to back it up or is it self-evident that Reed was a trillion times the defender Zach is? I bet if you gave a poll to non-Knick fans, Reed would get near unanimous support as the better defensive player. And "anywhere near" is informed; it follows from 3 decades of informed basketball observation indicating that Zach's defensive impact is "no where near" that of Reed's.

reed was a nasty defender. he laid some major wood on people in the lane. he busted his ass defending the paint and was a great help defender. he played in the classic era of centers too, up against the chamberlains, jabbars, unselds, cowenses, etc.

he once chased the entire lakers team off their bench,. I mean literally the entire team. You never saw an whole team so afraid on one person in your life. You guys must remember that, nalod, earl, papa, ira?

Bonn1997 - yes, as a matter of fact you do.

Marv - Willis was born in the slice of rural Louisiana where a Black man in the 1950's had to man up every day just to deal with life on a daily basis. Zach lists Jackie Robinson as the one autograph he would most like to receive.

the resemblance is downright uncanny.

Zach hasn't chased down an entire bench but punching out Ruben Patterson gets my vote.

Panos - actually I would submit that forwarding the candidacy of Wilson Chander as Mayor is more courageous than the chicken liver hearts who can only look in the rear view mirror and bitch and moan.

Some like Lee. A few like Balkman. (not much discussion of his health status amid all the Kobe threads) Nobody likes Curry, Isiah, the Dolan family, Jerome James, Gulf+Western, Vin Baker, the Keith Van Horn trade or Marbury. I get it.

I get it.

I think The Mayor will mature into a special player who is able to make varied contributions... and I'm willing to serve as his campaign manager before he's played a single regular season game - opposed to piling on someone the moral majority can't stand.

Who do you like?

Earl, I don't see why you are getting defensive in response to my post.
Did I criticize you? I just asked who you compared Chandler to.
Personally, I haven't seen him play a minute.

So, in my estimate, the rape count is Zach - 1, Willis - 0. I'd say thats a big difference. Or is there another heart-warming similarity to be found here?
Sh-t in the popcorn to go with sh-t on the court. Its a theme show like Medieval times.

BlueSeats - may I also remind you this is also a Marbury-free Zone

thank you for your support

Am I correct in assuming that the Mike Sweeney to Charles Barklely comparisons would be off-limits too?

You would be wrong. He was closer to Elton Brown

Randolph is not in Reed's class as a defender, but he is no slouch.

i thought the problem with ZR is that he *is* a slouch on defense. that he only puts out effort on offense. at least that's his rep.

Randolph play absolutely no defense and after reading this thread it is an insult to compare the two. Randolph gets no respect until he becomes a good citizen and show regard for the law. He has been in trouble almost every year since high school and character counts when building a team.

Panos - defensive? C'mon, spare me the assumptions on tonality. I ain't mad with nobody.

I think The Mayor defies any comparison at this point. From the tiny sample I watched in Vegas when he was away from the ball, his movements were inuitive and more sophisticated than those of a college sophomore.

He is something different at the three that the Knicks have not had in many years.

No I am going by what you said. He was a great defensive player and Zach cant guard anyone and that is a fact. Willis never got in trouble and Zach has been a distraction everywhere he has been. So why compare two men when one was a two way player and was a man of character versus a great offensive player, that plays no defense and has serious character issues?

"At least that's his rep"

Now, we're getting somewhere Masterplan. Willis Reed's "rep" was such that he was only worth a second round pick (number 10) because he hailed from an unknown school from an unknown conference.

Where does Zach's "rep" as a poor defender originate?

the best part:

"Most people don’t remember how bad we were when I first came to New York. We used to have to flip a coin every year with the Detroit Pistons for the number one pick in the draft. Most people remember from ’69 on, but I remember some of the tough years and the building years. Eddie Donovan, who was coach and general manager at the time, said we were going to build a team and win a championship, and we did.”

I dont look at someone game just on the floor. Offense, defense, intangibles, and character is what I look at in a players game. Zach has one of them and sounds to me Willis Reed has all of them. Zach rep is well documented if you watched him at Portland or even against Maccabi he doenst play any defense and that will be a huge problem when Zach and Eddy are on the floor together.

Except it took a new coach, Red Holzman, to put defense first, along with the addition of Dave Debussier at PF, to put substance behind the words.

King1 - are you talkin' bout practice?

If not, I don't know where else you are going to study a players game.

Larry Bird was a bitch in practice, talked big trash and had a daughter he still doesn't speak to. None of that has anything to do with the fact he was as clutch as they come.
