I can remember when I graSdurated from high school before I went to college. I worked for a big company. PSE&G. I was the first black at that office.I can remember some of the guys saying to me in a southern slang. HEY HOW'S WE'S ALL'S DOIN HUNEY CHILL. COME GETCHA SOOM FRY CHICKEN AND WATER MELLON. HEY DARKY COME SHINE MY SHOES. They all were laughing, it was a big joke to almost all of them. Then one day I stood up to them and they all got mad at me as though I've done something wrong. I couldn't sue anyone back then, but I learned from it. You see the white guys who I thought were my friends even started laughing at me. I realized that a dude can look at you in the face or even be on this forum can be a racist and try to hide it. But sooner or later you'll see them for what they are.
I don't like what Marbs said but I understand where he is coming from. If a white man was calling a black woman names like black bitch or trying to harm her, Marbs would come to her defense.

Papabear

How long ago was this, Papabear? Do you think that individual incidents make it a rule for the whole? Do you think that just because some people are idiots means that everyone should be held accountable?

As for your Marbury example, would Marbury come to the defense if a black man was insulting a black woman?

First of all, Solace, you should stay because you're easily one of the best posters here.

Second, Bear, please answer a question - why did Isiah bring up race in court when he's on trial for sexual harassment?

Whatever your reason is for asking that, I'm sure it isn't good. And its not relevant to the topic either - just as Larry Bird wasn't and your experience at PSE&G wasn't.

Thanks. I appreciate that. You're definitely among the rational posters that I enjoy posting with. However, the overall tone of this board is one that I'm becoming less and less interested in being affiliated with.

Agreed. I don't see the relevance -- but based on past history, I know the implication of said question.

I have to wonder how many African American women feel sold out for the race card by Isiah and some of the AA males who support the notion it's "less bad" for black males to denigrate black women.

This is after all a sexual harassment case, not a race crime case, so why did Isiah bring race into the equation? I have to figure it's a subterfuge to confuse the issue. How much of the population's opinion can he dispose of through such manuevering?

1. All whites. The race card says "this is a black thing, you'll never understand, so your opinion is invalid."
2. Some percentage of black males who willingly take the bait and in so doing suggest that the denigration of black females by black men is some sort of justifiable, historical inevitability. I think we see this in this thread.
3. Some percentage of black women who are so used to being talked down to they fear increased reprocussions for standing up for themselves.

All of these are designed to shut down or disqualify what could otherwise be productive conversation.

Black women under no circumstances should be considered beneath laws that are designed to protect all women, and one would think black males would be the first to want equality under the law for their mothers, children, sisters and spouses, but in suggesting that chauvanistic behavior is "just the way we do things, and it's nobody's business if we do," or "slavery made us this way" is self-segregating and self-discriminating.

I don't think anyone willfully choses this for themselves, but I see it as a side effect of taking the race bait and and thereby justifying reprehensible behavior on racial grounds.

Again, I'm sure no one believes they are doing so, but I think it underlies every attempt to qualify concerns in these matters when they come from whites. Don't think anyone here does that What does it mean when things are said like "whites just want to see a black man go down," or "unless your black you'll never understand," or "what race are you?"

Some may think those are relevant questions, but I think they're no more valid in a sexual harassment case then similar ones would be from whites in order to suggest that only whites should opine on a case of corporate embezzlement by a white executive.

I'm not so idealistic or naive to beleive that the laws on the streets should be the same in the ghetto and the suburbs, but this isn't about a discussion between a pimp and his hookers, this is about the discourse between upper levels of management of a large corporation. Killa and Code can disagree all they like on how much influence Isiah has on "the youth of today" but I think it's undeniable he, as President of Basketball Operations (and Knicks Emperor at large) has a huge influence over the population of MSG employees.

So too Anushca, who, if memory serves me, was VP of Marketing for all of MSG -- this includes the WBNA Liberty and others. Like Isiah, she was a basketball legend and a fast-track executive who, I can only imagine, was an inspiration to many female athletes and employees at the Garden.

In the Imus case, misterearl rightfully and eloquently asked "How must the parents of those girls feel when their kids are referred to as 'nappy headed 'hos'", and I think the similar question must fairly be asked here: how must the many females who respected Anuchca feel when the words "black," "ho," and "bitch" resounded through the hallowed halls of the Garden? And how now must the parents of young women like those of the Liberty, or interns and employees at MSG, feel when they hear Isiah largely indifferent about the possible mistreatment of women under his watch (So long as it was same-race mistreatment)?

Whatever Isiah's influence within the black community, now that his thoughts on how black women can be spoken to are in the air they are influential, regardless of where they arose. Even more influential is the response to them from black community leaders. I believe that was the point of the article and this thread.

My problem in so many of these racial discussions is how defensive blacks become when one of theirs is under fire and whites look to how the community will respond. That's when we get the stuff like "leave Zeke alone", "the media loves to skewer us," or "they'd never go after Larry Bird like this," etc. While some of those notions may have validity, situations like these still present a high-profile opportunity for us, as a society to educate, raise the bar, and move the line forward.

The Imus case was another such opportunity, and that is pretty much the main basis of comparison between the two.

I think that I'll get off this subject and talk basketball. If Zeke can't improve this team then he should be removed, but Marbs is Marbs and he is what he is and once again the majority of blacks like Marbs but the majority of whites dislike Marbs. Once again a disconnect. If Marbs have a good season and we go to the playoffs. I think he should stay a Knick. He will have to take a pay cut. I will not discuss again the Zeke trial again on the forum until the trial is over or unless one of you dudes say something so out of wak that I can't bite my toung.

I never said he was directly responsible. I said the quality of the game has diminished under his watch and listed what those things were. If he's given credit for things that are positive then he has to take what's negative. I already stated what I feel has contributed to those affects.

If Isiah Thomas was winning as much as Bill Belichick how many people would want him fired over his so called racist or sexist comments. How many media articles would come out making Isiah the victim & Miss Saunders as the bad person. Not that Isiah is a victim, but thats just the reality. If Isiah won like that he wouldn't be such an easy target to go after. As someone who wins like that would build up many many supporters. But Isiah hasn't been successful in terms of wins in NY so he is an easy targer to pile up on. Things like this case are allways seem a lot worse when you aren't successful, and allways not as bad when you are.

The reality of this world is that there is and will allways be racism, sexism, racial profiling, sterotyping. Though it isn't bad as it once was, but no way did it dissappear.

Do you believe everything would be the same if Saunders was white? Or if Isiah was white? Or if both of them were white?

That said going back to the top. I don't feel this case is about racism or sexism. It doesn't seem like Isiah goes around calling all black women bitches (Or maybe he does). And Its not like he states general statments about black women or women in general being bitches. He seemed to just not like Saunders, and called her a bitch. Though its still debatable if he really did.

I don't really want to comment to much on this subject because nobody outside of Saunders & Isiah, will know the whole truth. But nothing in this case makes me believe that Saunders should get 10mil or that Isiah Thomas should be fired. Though it would be understandable if Isiah got fired because of the lack of wins when compared with the amount of money he has spent. Plus the circus atmosphere which I agree needs to go.

If my mind is correct the Knicks haven't won a championship since the early 70s and Zeke was just a kid. Yea we had runs but no championship. Out of all the presidents and coaches of the knicks during that time we couldn't put 2 superstars or stars together in the Mecca of basketball to bring us a championship. Bernard King was the closest thing to a superstar weve had. Ewing was a great player but know one was able to surround him with the right pieces. I have to agree with some of the other forums about this forum when they say you guys over here are nothing but negetive haters and it's all geared at Zeke and Marbs. I kinda agree with Charles Barkley who said no superstars really want to come to New York especially the way you guys treated Ewing. Go back to the forum right before Ewing got traded and you chased him out of town. No stars wants to come to New York. It's the way you treat people. Always negitive things. So when Zeke and Marbs are gone do you really think that you will get a Dunkin, or King James, or Kobe?? Forget about it!!! They ain't comin and I can't blame them.
So you guys just keep on hatten. You were talken about trading for The Jazz Klinko (I guess thats his name) He ain't comin to the Knicks. We get guys like Spreewill the choker, and Zach the gang banger.
and you are still complaining. Go and become a Celtics fan. You will make a better fit. Go talk about KG.

Dudes!
This forum should be about basketball.
What's happening in this trial is embarrasing for Knick fans, because people behaved badly. End of story.
I would so much rather see time spent going on and on about what are starting lineup is and who should play, and how-
I think in the 3 seasons I've been reading this board this is the least in the offseason that people have talked about basketball. The losing effect has really screwed with the Knick fan. That's why the say you can't rebuild in New York.
I think basketball wise this will surprisingly be a stabilizing season- I think the Knicks - long term- will benifit from the young players Isaih has put together- but- I don't think Isiah will be here by the time it really pans out.
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

I agree with most of your post, but I have to disagree here. DJ kinda alluded to this point earlier, but I feel this story has taken on a "You see what happens when you put Blacks charge" vibe.

So we essentially have three competing theories as to what this story is about:

1. Isiah and Dolan are on trial for not winning.
2. Isiah and Dolan are on trial for both being black.
3. Isiah and Dolan are on trial for their hostile, inappropriate, and unprofessional managerial style.

Considering that the suit was filed before last season concluded as a losing debacle, and the defendants are both a black and white man, would seem to rule out options #1 and #2, leaving this to be a case about #3.

I don't see this as a story about blacks or losing records, I see it as a story about a tough woman drawing a line at impropriety and not settling for being steamrolled by two powerful, and possibly reckless, male opponents.
