I'm not going to assume Isiah didn't say that, but is there reason one should assume what Brown Sanders says is any more or less true?

And if Isiah did say this, I believe that the seeming lack of understanding about some key ways that race still plays a powerful role in society (including with us) by more than a few posters here in multiple discussions that have taken place on this forum is a factor in formulating attitudes about the alleged comment.

If one does not fully grasp this then studies show that experiencing things such as anger and resentment towards white people from people of color, no matter what kind of "power" that individual or group may seem to have currently, is going to make (mostly) whites more upset.

This does not necessarily "excuse" such behavior, but any progress in changing this cycle seems more likely to occur if we as whites take these kinds of comments less personally, and more in the context of race and power in current society.

we all have biases and prejudices about different races. and anybody that denies that is lying to themselves. it's the society we were raised in, the portrayals of race in media growing up, and things told to us by people that influence our upbringing. everyone has these biases.

isiah is no different...BUT you do not say stuff like that in a work atmosphere. i don't know if he did BUT there were articles and reports from former CBA owners that said isiah acted the same way in their meetings and said things in a hostile manner.

[Edited by - djsunyc on 09-12-2007 11:30 AM]

The NY Daily News wrote:

Thomas, who bought the league in 1999 and said he was going to turn it into a “Microsoft for basketball,” would curse and threaten to “kick asses” if the teams from Sioux Falls, La Crosse, Boise and other small cities didn’t see things his way.

“He ruled with intimidation,” says Diane Bosshard, who owned the La Crosse (Wis.) Bobcats with her husband Bill before selling to Thomas.

“It was just like, ‘If I swear enough or if I act like I’m tough enough you’re going to back down.’”

“Just the rudest person that I have ever run into in my entire life,” says Rich Coffey, the former GM of the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Fury and now the owner of the Fort Wayne Freedom in the Arena Football League.

“He’s a very poor business person. He doesn’t listen to people. He’s always right. He makes poor decisions, and I’m talking about the CBA in particular.

“Who he listens to are people who tell him what he wants to hear. The fact that he’s still in basketball and running the Knicks just astounds me.”

Thomas . . . ran a 55-year-old league into bankruptcy just as he left to become the head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Most of the old owners and a few new ones bought the league out of Chapter 7and revived it . . .

“The (CBA) owners got their money back, but then there are the employees, the players and the fans who are season ticket holders who got nothing. I worked three or four months without pay after I had worked (with the Fury) for 10 years,” says Coffey, a father of four.

“When I bought the Freedom four years ago, the first thing I said at a press conference with fans was, ‘Isiah Thomas is not involved.’”

There were cheers from the crowd . . .

misterearl--the world has come light years from this period. Am I supposed to say things about German people in 2007 for what happened in the 1940\'s? I think that African Americans should *get over it* and move on--that is the way of history.

Get Over it? Move on? Do you realize that my parents and grandparents are still alive and not too many years ago my Great Grandmother who died at 97 years old was still alive. I can assure you that the not so distant past history of this country hasn't been forgotten by any of my relatives. Heck I can even still remember what it was like back in the early 70's down south. It's funny how people want us to get over things after just 40 years of improving circumstances, meanwhile we can just overlook the couple hundred years of abuse.

I'm mostly African with Native American and European ancestors. I just hate the get over it angle. I understand what you may mean to some degree, in particular when it comes to fighting past the racist nature of things to overcome and rise above, but the problem is that there's a systemic disadvantage and that makes things difficult for the average minority trying to succeed. Yeah some break through, but not hardly enough.

The thing is that what Anucha B. Sanders and her attorneys did was basically playing a race card for the inflammatory nature of it. Since there are no Black jurors, it serves to bias them against Isiah to call him a racist. That's the real reason they had her talk about that.

Luckily like Nixluva I come from a mixed ancestry and feel I can see this topic from both perspectives.

Number one: White people have to get past this idea that black people need to "just get over it". As Nixluva said this isn't ancient history. People are still being affected by this not so distant history and that is where the anger comes from. Even if every white person in the US to this day was a multicultural wiz without a racist bone in their body and doing everything to help blacks there would still be institutions and results in place that would be holding people back unintentionally. It's tough to "just get over that". It's tough to "just get over things" when you know little is being done about it. That handouts are given but true change is never really performed. Yes main stream attitudes have changed and it's become a much better place to live. But racism is far from ancient history and is felt every day by blacks. Even those that have found success. It's really difficult for people to understand that unless they are going through it.

Number 2- I can see the other end of things as well. If I'm some white guy. Not a racist bone in my body. I come to a website to talk Knicks. I love all the people I talk to each day and not one time do I give a thought to what color the other posters are. I post happily. I crack jokes and really feel like I have a group of friends that I'm developing. But suddenly every day I'm bombarded by the same people about how racist the world is and how every opinion I have about a black player/coach/GM is turned into a racial attack. I'm not on a board to discuss social issues on a regular basis. I'm here to talk Knick basketball. Yet everyday I'm told how racist I am without any evidence. After a while I would probably stop caring about the plight of others and just want people to "get over it". Sometimes as blacks we need to understand who are enemies are and realize that if we want change we need to attack them and not just the random guys that come to a Knicks chat room.

No you shouldn't, but if German people are doing some of the same stuff, but in a different form then yea.

Briggs you must be sheltered from the incidences that happen in the united states of america that still resembles atrocitiesthat occured back in the day.

Personally I don't think any of the presidential candidates give much more than lip service to the main issues. I think they pander to special interest groups in order to garner votes instead of making true changes. I think we fall prey to these groups and let them dictate what is good for the rest of us without giving real thought to the unintended consequences. I personally think because of this we have developed a whole generation of people that think that someday the government will come and save them. Slowly moving us into the direction of socialism.

Personally I think the most change will come within our education system. I tend to lean toward candidates that realize this. We need to get the special interest, socialist and political correct police out of our schools and get back to true education. We are failing our kids. Yes there are many institutions in place that keep blacks from being rich. But in order to get above the poverty line it is pretty simple in this country. Easier than any other country in the world whether we want to believe it or not. The problem is we aren't teaching our kids how easy it is. We aren't teaching the practical steps that they can take to get to this level. Instead we are neglecting our inner city schools and letting generations of people grow up without an idea of how easy it is. Every year we get kids at our schools who are only considering college because of their basketball skills. When you show them the other opportunities that college provides they can't see it. Until we improve the educational system, and show these kids how to succeed. We need to start worshipping those in our communities that succeed through business instead of calling them names. The next area I look for in a candidate is how they approach............lost my train of thought and can't remember

Get over it and move on?

This is dedicated to the "light years" briggs claims society has advanced since slavery.

BIG CREEK, W.Va. - Six white suspects accused of torturing a young black woman for days in West Virginia will not face federal hate crime charges, Justice Department officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

At one point, an assailant cut the woman’s ankle with a knife and used the N-word in telling her she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaints.

The Justice Department said it will defer to West Virginia in prosecuting the six suspects.

Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said his office would pursue other charges first because they carry stiffer penalties. West Virginia’s hate crime law carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

Also Wednesday, Abraham said the woman, who allegedly was sexually assaulted and forced to eat rat droppings, was not a random target.

Grisly details

Megan Williams, 20, was found beaten and bruised at Brewster’s mother’s home in rural Big Creek on Saturday. According to criminal complaints, Megan Williams, 20, was detained and assaulted for about a week.

... Williams’ captors, all of them white, choked her with a cable cord and stabbed her in the leg while calling her a racial slur, poured hot water over her, made her drink from a toilet and made her eat dog feces and rat droppings.

She was also beaten and sexually assaulted during a span of about a week, according to the complaints.

It wasn’t until an anonymous tip led Logan County Sheriff’s deputies to the property on Saturday that her ordeal ended. She limped toward the deputies, her arms outstretched as she cried, “Help me!”

“Help me!”

I'm gonna say something inflammatory.

Talking about politics, US life and racism on this board has really made me sad about what the future holds. I often end up feeling liek white people just dont get it. I talk about racism to enlighten and inform because I think its the only way we can ever move foward, not because I'm angry and want to argue (I already know this stuff!!!). I have lived in a large black body for 32 years and I know what it is like to be black, how society responds to you, how people treat you, what they assume about you. I'm not always treated badly or differently, but certainly alot of the time and certainly very often I am. It is something I am forced to think about, because other people make my blackness an issue. I understand it as a reality of my life in this country. Other people of color understand it too. White people largely do not, and do not want to, and dont want to hear about it; hence the cries to get over it or stop playing the race card.

Saying get over it? Get over what? I'm over it. I've been over it. Its actually the racists who need to get over themselves and the ignorant (not quite racist) white people trapped somewhere between racism and stupidity who need to get over it as well. This really is a simple matter. A little understanding can go a long way when talking about the totally unscientific, unbiological concept of race and racism.

Oh, and btw, Saying "bitch I dont give a **** about these white people" isnt in the least bit racist, particularly not in the context in which it was allegedly said. The kind of white people who get excited about this kind of stuff and talk about how Isiah should be fired for this (in response to Imus), highlight for me what I truly already know: many of you just dont get it.

PresIke already laid this out for you, and Marv tacked on as well. If you think this statement is racism, you are truly clueless. Holla back at me when black cops are killing white kids by 'accident', if you wanna talk to me about racism. Lets be real hear, racism isn't just about being offended at a remark and when white people try to make it seem that way, it just really really saddens me and makes me think we are never gonna conquer this thing.

it is racist to say that. Arabs dont have a monopoly on blowing up buildings. The US armed forces have been 9/11ing places all over the world for a long time. 9/11 was all arabs? well they were all men too, why not focus on that? Racism is lazy thinking, and it leads us away from understanding instead of towards it.

9/11 happened for a reason, and its not because 'they hate our freedom'.

So making those comments hihglights a lack of sophistication on the part of the person saying it, and yes, black and white people say it all the time. Like millions of Americans, they are not so bright when it comes to understanding the world.

get over it

killa4luv - you just wrestled with a difficult topic from a perspective few take the time to consider... or simply analyze from a historic perspective with a sharp eye on current events.

Yeah, "some of my best friends are... " "I took a Black history course once..." or my personal favorite, "hey, why can't you just be colorblind like me?"

Isiah holds a position of power. That, in itself, was an instantly creepy thought the moment he walked into his office. The dreck he inherited or the fact the Knicks have not won a championship in 34 years has nothing to do with the expectations for his first 4 years.

Isiah is a snake.

Interesting. Now how do we choose the words to describe Bill Belichick?

I understand you feelings.
It was absolutely same for me when I was leaving in Soviet Union and being Jew national get same treatment every minute of my life.
On top of this the Soviet government deprived Jews from getting equal education, government jobs, free travel, practicing religion and culture. Do you see all this in US?
I agree that Isiah antics are not racism of this nature. Same as Imus antics are not. This is just words and they are taken out of contexts. But let's be fair and treat everybody the same way. If Isiah is OK so Imus is OK.
My opinion they both are jerks and idiots and deserve same treatment but it’s just me.
Racism is not an excuse for crime, ignorance, laziness, and low culture. We Jews made the best of the oppression to become the one of the most educated, reach, influential, and talented nation of the world.
You want to deprive us from education - we will make the main goal for our children to have the best education possible.
You want us to be pure - we will grab all money of the world.
You want us to disappear - we will built a country of power
You want us to surrender - we will race above you.
This how you fight racism - not by bitching and morning...

A Jew doesn't have a face that can be picked out of a crowd and discriminated against just because your hue is darker than everyone else.

Blacks have that kind of drama 365 7 days a week.

You want us to be pure - you burn down our churches.
You want us to disappear - you drop govt crack in low income neighborhoods
You want us to surrender - you put us in jail
This how you win at racism in america - by dying

misterearl--so we can compare isolated incidents to widespread abuse? Don\'t you think that there are very similar incidents against ALL races from time to time whether it be white-asian black spanish--etc.. of course. The world has it\'s monsters in it. This is quite different from the ideology of early US and Germany. All people have equal chance in US now--that is why I say look at who is running for president a woman an african american and a mexican--PRESIDENT of US. When OJ Simpson chops up white wife and young white kid--it is an isolated incident. Are there rural parts of US that are still 30 years behind times like in Jena LA? Yes. Is there skin heads out there in US who want to fry my Jewish arse--yes--not to mention millions of arabs if we are talking truth. I grew up without a dad fom age 8 and then poor after he died--I turned out OK--no need to make excuses or blame others. If you want to be next obama or oprah--you have to try harder and not blame US way of life in 1940. We blew a hole in the middle of japan in 1940--they got over it--understand? life moves on.
