Is it impossible for Marbury, or any other player, to receive the benefit of goodwill?

Can players be allowed to change, as in the case of Marbury showing up to work out in August, or are they permanently typecast?

In general being skeptical when it comes to positive NYK off season reports is the best practice.

How much have we heard in recent years about how player x or player y is in the best shape of their life, playing at the top of their game, performing fantastically at training camp... only to be utterly disappointed with said players performance when the regular season comes along?

How about all the great stuff we heard about the LB run squad a couple years back? The hype was sickening. And we all know how that turned out.

If you want to extend the benefit of the doubt to Marbury, go right ahead. However based on how he's shown up to training camp in past years, his obvious focus this off season (kicks), and his recent comments about going to Italy in two years... it's hard to believe he's giving his all to getting prepared for the season. It seems more likely we'll see more of the same.

trueblue - the issue wasn't simply whether Steph was in shape last year or not.

How could anyone say for certain that he wasn't working out Summer?

He has Commitment and Excellence Tatted on his Neck/Arm I believe. If he worked out last Summer, which I'm sure he did, he didn't Commit or Excel to/in making sure his workouts had him in the best possible shape he could be in. Now does that mean we should assume he'll do the same idiotic thing this summer of course not, but let's not give him another person to endorse his shoes, before we have proof that he'll produce opposite results.

So Marbs was out of shape the begining of last year!! So What!! If he came in shape some of you would be complaining that he would be out of gas by the end of the season. And I'm not saying he came to camp out of shape. He has a right to his own time. If the league wants a earlier training camp, just put it in law.
If I was Marbs I would be enjoying the summer just like he is doing. I know you want Marbs gone.
Just remember one thing!!! Be carefull what you wish for.

It is fair to ask how someone develops their opinion.

It seems a bit over the top to ask 'How did you determine his actual fitness level?', knowing full well that no one here can do that...wouldn't you agree?

bonn can.

Relentless!

Say What?

"Now does that mean we should assume he'll do the same idiotic thing this summer of course not, but let's not give him another person to endorse his shoes, before we have proof that he'll produce opposite results."

It seems that once again, what started as a positive story about the next Mayor, 20 year-old Wilson Chandler, has devolved into yet another Marbury diss-fest.

Whether Marbury comes in overweight or more fit than Billy Blanks is of little consequence in the new scheme of things. If his mental approach is not ready, willing and able to adjust his game to the new set of skills he's in a position to lead... then guess what... ?

Coach Thomas will sit him down faster than a contestant bidding $2500 over the suggested retail price in front of Bob Barker.

Mardy Collins is a year wiser, Jamal can play lead guard and feed the post, Nate is more focused because he knows the third year is the fork in the road and Fred Jones WILL play defense

Back to the subject of the thread. I'm really hoping that Isiah can clean up the roster so that we can make room to play Chan and DNic. These guys are CLEARLY more like what we need and even if they aren't fully ready, who cares? I just want to see these guys play and start to gain experience.

We've had such good results from our rookies getting some PT and it would be a shame for these guys, who seem to fit our needs so well, not to get a chance to play. We can't do that unless Isiah makes some tough decisions. Jared should either see his PT cut or he must be traded cuz he's in the way.

Steph, Q, Balk, Zach & Curry - Jamal, Lee, Chan, Jared, Nate or DNic

If you take out Jared things work out pretty well in terms of being able to play the rooks.

Haha I was just saying it is best to be skeptical of any gushing reports we hear about the Knicks in the off season, because they usually wind up being very much off the mark. Gave the LB season as an example - in that case there was incredible hype during training camp which turned into... well, you know what it turned into.

mythfaze - I'm witchoo on not believing the hype

then again, I could not contain the smile upon watching Demetris Nichols, Randolph Morris and the next Mayor, Wilson Chandler, in person.

Are they works in progress? You damn skippy.

The raw material is evident.

When you see what you want at a position, you need to go get it. What I see with Nichols, Morris and The Mayor are three pieces of clay. They all have the skills, and a professional demeanor in terms of playing basketball. The best part? None of them ever cracked a smile.

I think of them as sponges. Blank canvasses. Works of art? That remains to be seen.

What can they do with personal coaching, training and support?

How about dealing with Minny to get rid of the glut on this team free up some cap room.....

Randolph Morris
6-11 C from Kentucky
0.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 0.2 apg in 8.6 minutes
Jamal Crawford
6-5 SG from Michigan
17.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.4 apg in 37.3 minutes
Zach Randolph
6-9 PF from Michigan State
23.6 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 2.2 apg in 35.7 minutes

Plus a first round selection

Outgoing Players
Randy Foye
6-3 PG from Villanova
10.2 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.8 apg in 22.9 minutes
Ricky Davis
6-7 SG from Iowa
17.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.8 apg in 37.3 minutes
Theo Ratliff
6-10 C from Wyoming
2.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 0.0 apg in 21.5 minutes

Crawford
Brewer
Green
Randolf
Jefferson

Marbury/Collins
Davis/Foye
Q/Balkman
Lee/Jefferies
Curry/Ratliff

I don't think Minny would do it, but we really need a guard for the future that can take over a game...

We won't need to give up so much just to get a good PG. We still have the draft, trades, FA and maybe even our own players to choose from. It all depends on how things work out over the next season. I would bet that we'll be targeting PG's from here on out.

Yes I am on drugs. We are a fringe playoff team with zero cap room. Doing that deal is great for the long term health of the franchise, and thats why the deal would never get done.

You bring in two expiring deals, for a guard that is going to be as good as chauncey billups can hit the big shot and plays great defense......

I don't see why you think we are giving up a ton there. Your getting rid of 27 million in the cap, and your young talent pool grows considerably. With Marbury expiring next season along with rose thats another 28 million so if you want to get a power foward i am sure you can. Crawford produces no wins, Raldolf has never been on a winner so whats the big deal. Would you rather be an 7-8th seed for the next 5 years and have no future?

I'm just saying that i'd rather find some other way to get the PG we need. I don't want to give up Zach in trade for a PG. Why should we? Randolph not being on a winning team has nothing to do with this. We have many other options for getting a PG that will be there for us over the next year or so. I'm not going to weaken a position to get a PG at this point.
