Why people think Isiah will be any less aggressive in adding new talent is beyond me.
It's because the team has no assets to use to improve

And the Knicks were just brimming with assets when he took over the job?

Yes, the ability to offer lottery draft picks, Euro prospects and cap space (via expiring contracts and a willingness to eat horrific contracts, like penny) are highly valuable assets to teams who do want to trim payroll and or rebuild (ie, Phoenix, Chicago)

An argument could probably be made that no GM in the history of the league has had the assets at his disposal to do what Isiah has done.

Wow. Interesting way at looking at things.

Prospects? We talking about Frank Williams, Vujanic, Lampe, Sweetney, ext. All were borderline prospects, if that. Where they at now? Milk carton.

Lottery picks? How many lottery picks did Zeke give up? I thought the only one was last year and we all know the circumstances behind that. He traded picks that were mid to late 1st rounders unless I am lapsing here.

We were headed to the lottery in isiah's first season. We gave that pick to the suns in the Marbury deal. Has we kept it I believe we might have gotten Igoudala in the draft. The other pick in that deal becomes unprotected in '10, so that too may become a lottery pick. In the Curry deal went what became the #2 pick, and if we're in the lottery this year that would make a 4th potential lottery pick traded.
To say he gave up the most assets out of any GM is just a bizarre statement when taking into account the roster that was assembled under Layden. He had SOME assets, (expiring contracts, absorb money) but nowhere near the level you describe. He had to make moves, to say otherwise would be naive at best; his margin for error was slim, and he made mistakes obviously. Hence we're still average at best.

Not all assets were given up but they were at his disposal. Consider MLE's, coaches, buyouts, alleviating teams of burdensome contracts. etc.

Tell ya what, instead insinuating I exaggerate and calling my statements "bizarre", how about you show me other GMs who've traded as many first round picks and taken on as many burdensome contracts, thus facilitating other team's rebuilds, as quickly and to the same extent as has Isiah. Name one GM a team would call before Isiah when they have a project "star" with a questionable attitude and bad contract to unload. Name one GM who's had more money to spend than Isiah on coaches or players.

Proving me wrong would go a lot farther than zesty rhetoric.
This is his team and his organization now, so I am not going to play the retroactive blame game and throw everything on Layden's lap, but a little balance and perspective on Zeke's tenure here would be appreciated.

IMO, that balance needs to come when assessing how our assets were utilized, not by denying the amount and power of them.

Scott Layden's roster was dreck. Need proof?

Count the number of active former Knicks from that roster

We all know that, the only reason Layden gets mentioned is so Isiah can look good next to someone.

That said, Layden's 37 win team of his last full season would probably whoop this team, and that's without McDyess.

I think most are being objective in their criticism that this team has very little future beyond being an 8 seed wanna be for the next few years.

received wisdom, passed on thru these forums as if it held a kernel of truth. far from objective, rather, an a priori judgement espoused to justify a current attitude.

With these fans, you're either a Chamionship team or you offer "very little future beyond being an 8 seed". The journey, the bumps and growing pains along the way. They don't want to endure any of that.

not to be a broken record, but

Answer me this one question- is there a player on the current squad who will turn into the kind of all star that can lead their team to the NBA Finals? And if there isn't such a player, how exactly do you see Isiah getting them?

I don't see one on the roster. Unless Lee develops some lethal outside game and turns into the next Larry Bird who is the superstar?

I never comment on Curry's lack of defense, poor rebounding, disastrously pathetic decisions passing out of double teams and lack of shot blocking.

But, the fact is, Curry is a really good player, but he doesn't warrant 'great' next to his name.

Franco you should know by now that when you ask tough relevant questions you will only receive silence. The best you can hope for is to be called a hater.

I think it's only common sense that this team will never win a championship, but I do think that it can be pretty good. like 45 win good at some point. maybe even 50 if things really go right.

Why are you inventing lottery picks? Are you actually blaming Isiah for making the playoffs in his first year? '10 hasnt happened yet and the Knicks still have a more than solid chance of making the playoffs this year. Thats three down.

I stand behind my "bizarre" statement because when Zeke took the job nobody was talking about these wealth of assets he had at his disposal, just the pitiful roster he inherited. You are playing revisionist history. Its not to say that the situation was completely hopeless, but the prospects you invoke, yet whose names you conveniently ignore, are damn near all out of the league. Again, you are not using any balance or perspective. You seem to just be grinding axes and trying to make Zeke look as bad as possible by even playing fast and loose with facts.

You were the one that made the statement that no GM in the history of the league had his assets --- you back it up. I aint doing a damn thing. I'm going to class and partying my @ss off tonight.

as regards this converstation its more important to keep in mind how good those prospects where viewed as at the time they were on our roster, not now. if phoenix knew lampe would be out of the league right now there's a chance that they don't make the marbury trade. what I'm actually trying to say is if those prospects were viewed as somewhat valueable and as having potential at the time then thats how you should look at them in terms of how much value they added to the roster isiah inherited.

I get it sebstar, you're a young guy and you're having trouble to understand the concept of assets outside of talent.

Lets try to abstract this a bit. Two of your friends, are talking. "Homer" is excitedly telling "Hater" about his new car:

Homer: "Dude, did I tell you about my new car? Know how I used to drive that crummy '85 Mazda? Well my dad just bought me a '2000 Subaru. It's like so totally awesome."

Hater: "A 2000 Subaru is totally awesome? Okay..."

Homer: "Dude, maybe it's not great but do you realize what a piece of junk that was that I started with?"

Hater: "Anyway, I heard your dad bought that in a manic fit where he mortgaged the house and blew your college fund and their retirement savings. Is that true?"

Homer: "Dude, like who cares, I just got a Subaru!!!"

Lampe sunk like a rock in the draft and couldnt even get on the court. Williams was a late 1st rounder with borderline skills. Vujanic wasnt coming over and Sweetney was/is just fat and slow. All were dramatically flawed talents who proved as much. They werent valued much and Zeke should get credit for evaluating their collective lack of ability and dumping them when many around here were proclaiming this nucleus as the future.

What do you mean you're waiting on me. I made my case. I've already noted that Isiah's had the freedom to trade 4 1st round draft picks in a span of 1.5 years, the freedom to spend nearly half a billion on talent (using DJ's figure), the freedom to sign and fire 2 HOF coaches in 2.5 years, etc. I also noted I can't think of another GM in this league who's had the freedom to utilize assets so freely. You called that bizarre.

Why wouldn't "critical thinking" require you to back up that assertion when challenged?

Who now is waiting on whom?
