Have you ever listened to Clyde talk about free throw shooting?....and way to take 2 extreme instances and come to a conclusion.

I could shoot FTs at >80% with practice, but could never play NBA caliber defense.

I agree to some extent...for example if you are not a good shooter, it more difficult to be a good free throw shooter..I think it's harder for Lee to be a good free throw shooter because he is not a good shooter...Now if he improves that means he has worked very hard on that aspect of his game...Defense I think is commitment if you are athletic...Like Marbs should have been a good defender in his career but because he has been so good offensively most coaches gave him a pass except LB...

hol, I think you should separate out bad defenders (Curry) from not getting it defenders (Frye) to lack of experience defenders (Lee).

Lee ain't perfect but he aint that bad either. The other 2 leave a LOT to be desired.

Curry isn't that bad either man, give him alittle credit. If Curry played D like he did before this season, he would only worry about stopping his man, which he was pretty good at in years prior. He is working on his help D Now and he get's caught out of postion this year. HOw is that not Lack of experience????

That's an understatement. He cancels out any positive from his offense with his turnovers and defense. That's why I don't get it when people say we must keep him.

how did the Knicks win the game last night when all their players cancel out their offensive contributions w/their lack of defense? i guess Portland's players cancelled out their positives just a little more than the Knicks did? who contributed to the win last night if Curry didn't in your eyes Bonn? just curious.

Curry is not untradeable in my eyes. Is he improving big time? Yes. Does he deserve props? Yes. But his defense and rebounding still suck ars and he's got A LOT to prove in those areas. If he becomes solid to real good to great in those areas, then we'll talk about untradeable.

So Frye (3 blocks last night) "doesn't get it" but David Lee has "lack of experience"? That my friend, is spin.

Lee is a slightly better man-to-man defensive player than Frye, when Lee is actually playing his man instead of looking for the rebound. However, Frye does much more ona team defense level, stepping over to shut down lanes with his length when we inevitably get beat outside, challenging shots, etc.

You can call them any kind of defenders you please. All 3 of them are still bad.

I didn't see yesterday's game but I don't find sample sizes of 1 impressive anyway.

Then why is Frye time getting reduced and Lee is getting his minutes if his defense is better? the 3rd quarter run was on defense.

Bonn, I just think you're being a bit harsh on Curry. Again, I'm not his biggest fan, but he's probably making more strides than any other Knicks we have this year, besides Lee. His offensive fouls have been minimal and he's passing more and a little better. Not great, but better. Last year, if he was doubled, he'd just ram right through it. Much more controlled. I don't doubt he'll get in even better shape and improve his defense. Problem is, I don't know how much it will improve along with his rebounding, but again, I think it will get better.

With that said, I again say, he's not untradeable. There are a nice number of bigs in the league I'd rather have.

I actually think Frye is a better man on man and help defender than Lee...I have never seen Lee play anyone man on man and block the shot..Frye played very well defensively against Randolf last night

How is it Lee is inexperienced and Frye don't get it...Aren't both players in their second year...Staying in front of your man has nothing to do with inexperience...

SAS said Lee is a defensive liability the last few days now and I tend to agree...But I think Lee can improve, he just needs to work as hard on D and he does getting to the rebounding ball...I think any athlete can defend...

Lee is a bad defender too, still. You ever see him trying to defend shooters? He's just as bad as Curry in that area. His best area is low post D.

OK, but don't make silly statements like "Any athlete can defend" because not every athlete, in my mind, is capable, because it takes a lot more than movement. I would say good defense contains reaction time and concentration (Something not everyone has, just look at the Knicks) just as much as athletic ability. Not every great athlete is gonna be a good defender.

That's my hoops claim to fame bro....You touched a nerve....But my point is that if you are an athlete you can keep up with the offensive player..All you have to do is try...Look at Marbs, completely different player the last two years...I think Curry can be much better if he tries harder on defense...he doesn't...everything you discribed including reaction time is the definition of being an athlete....Lee will get better at it, watch...It will be pointed out to him and he will pay attention and improve...

It takes more than athletic ability to defend properly. You have to have the fundamentals and the desire to play defense.
