I think Marbury was Marbury both during and after the winning streak. I also don't think that the six game winning streak was a watershed moment for Marbury like some seem to make it out to be. I think what happened after the streak. I think the team was gelling and had a winning attitude and was being sparked by Marbury's aggressive play. I think LB loved the way he was playing(not following the conspiracy theories) and we were all functioning on all cylinders.

Then the injury. The team really stopped playing after he got hurt. You could see it in the body language. The rookies lost confidence and the vets really seemed to use his absence as an excuse. When Marbs came back and the losing continued he did what he normally does, instead of picking the team up and rallying them around him he instead contributed to the malaise.

Now if you read clearly I don't blame Marbs for the mess that followed because I think the end of the season began the day he ran into Szcerbiak. But I think it's clear to me at least that Marbs did nothing to turn around the misfortune and instead added to it. This is where Marbs continues to get hammered. If you aren't the leader of a team and aren't "the best PG in the league" than you can get away with just being another player. But when you open your mouth and say you are the best and then become the default leader of the team you have a responsibility to lead. This responsiblity does not mean accolades for the numbers you put up. It means you need to rally the troops when they are down, play harder than everyone else and be a driving force for good. If you do these things and the team still loses you will be applauded(like Charlie Ward and Allan Houston). But if you openly fight with the coach(doesn't matter who's fault it is), and frown and growl at your teammates when things are going bad then you have to understand that you are still leading. Just not in the direction you want the team to go. He has to change or else he will be instantly forgotten upon retirement. Marketing will not change his rep. Marbury will.

Extreme Marbury Makeover

>>Marbury has yet to prove what he brings to the table translates into winning basketball

Rubbish

I contend that Marbury HAS what it takes to be a winner

Being a winner is as much a state of mind as it is "playing the (cough) right way"

Nalod - let's NOT wrap it up. Especially on such a dismissive tone.

Marbury has the tangibles.... what he needs are the initangibles...

The traits which fans identify, or attacth to their favorites from a distance - traits like charisma (Magic Johnson), lovability (Starks), improvisation (Doctor J) creativity (Nate Archibald) empathy (Chris Dudley) and poise (Mike Piazza) are difficult to manufacture.

It is unfortunate that a prodigal son cannot get more love.

I agree with you 100% by the way. THe Homers who defend him to the hilt are over reative to make exucuses. There is nothing wrong with his game, its his mind.

Jordan was the biggest sob! He yelled at this teammates and did not trust them. Then phil got in his head and he learned that the threat of jordan on the court made his team better even when he did not have the ball. He never stopped being an SOB, an arrogant one at that be he:

1. Delivered underpressure.

2. Won the big game with the big shot many times.

3. Respected his coaches.

4. Worked WITH his players and wanted them to get better.

5. Trusted others and gave up the ball at big times for his teammates to have easy shots (paxton game winner, Kerr game winner, Wennington game winners!)

6. Demonstrated leadership by playing his brains out on defense, played with injury, played with the flu. Earned leadership by being the man, not just with posting statistics.

7. The above made him a god, and those around him better.

Is Starbury Jordan? No. If he did half the things above he would a leader.

Can he change from being a grouch selfish on court persona? I think so.

Isiah knows how to do the above too. He was the leader of his Indian championship team and a Detroit team that struggled to the top!

Marbury will get much love once he demonstrates more than his physical talent.

Great post. I agree 100%. It's alright to be a grouch and a jerk. It's also okay to get everything handed to you by your team. But if these things are going to be present you also have to play harder and more consistently than everyone else on the roster. If the organization hands you things and you take nights off, fight with the coach, don't play d and then say you are the best, guess what, you are going to be hammered.

Let's see what's the best way to explain it.

Earl, it's like a woman. If she does something that pisses you off or she looks pissed off at you there are steps to follow first.

1) Give here a smile and ask her what's wrong. 50% chance she'll respond because what she's actually looking for is some attention (sound like someone familiar).

2) If (1) happens be as supportive as possible and listen to what she has to say and give her a shoulder to cry on (sounds corny but it works) Believe it or not Isiah has mastered the skill of smiling and being understanding while not necessarily meaning it.

3) If the chick is gonna brood regardless...put her ass on IGNORE (That's where Steph is at this point in his career).

Now Steph's got our ear because we don't have any choice in the matter. However, I can assure that if we're getting our assess handed to us and he pulls the brooding towel wearing dashiki thing Isiah will be the first to put him on Ignore.

Basically i'm saying the same thing you said in the first post. Hope this clears it up for you.

>>Marbury is a typical grouchy miserable SOB.

Junkmein - what if Marbury is simply a grouchy, miserable SOB after he loses?

He hasn't mastered the art of what to say and how to act after defeat. Or is it that when things go south he takes it upon himself too much to take responsibility for the comeback?

During the six game winning streak, was his demaeanor any different?

The words Marbury may need to learn with the new Knicks are
patience and trust

Just win baby

I think that's the most accurate one sentence description.

I hope there is nothing wrong with Marbury's 59 cents basketball shoes

BTW - Yes to Webber for Mo Taylor, Quentin and Philly-bred Malik Rose
