Strom Thurmond, Is That YOU?

Killa - outstanding synopsis of the mythical and mis-played "race card"

>>The main point is here is some people seem to think that views are created and shaped by a person's race. I sure hope not, because mine aren't. I think most people here aren't either. I just don't know how anyone could be a fan of a sport with such diversity and then be racist.

Solace - being a fan of a franchise and having sophisticated political views are NOT intertwined. How can someone be a fan and be a racist?

The same way a slave "master" could hold another person in bondage for forced free labor and then turn around and rape the women in the night.
I don't think there was much bleating about Black people being less than human at those salacious, and well-documented moments, in world history.

How could Strom Thurmond keep a relationship with a Black woman and his daughter secret for decades, while legislating Segregation?

Of COURSE the perception of Isiah Thomas is tainted by his race. Color-blindness, dating from Jackie Robinson to Omar Minaya and Wilie Randolph, is a stone cold myth.

Having said that, I bleed orange and blue.

He made an extreme effort to make it clear this was NOT what he was saying.

If that's the case, then maybe I misunderstood what he said. I thought that was the point he was making. My apologies, then.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Turning the corner a bit, if Isiah coaches the Knicks as well as guys as rvhoss say he will and the Knicks win a championship in two years, I'll be at the front of the line for Isiah as coach of the year and give him all the credit in the world. However, from my point of view, Isiah took over the Knicks in the hole, then instead of climbing out, he dug the hole deeper and wider. That's really what I think most people care about; not about his race.

McK1 - if you can't discuss serious matters.. matters of perception and honesty ... without acting like a child, then why not just scroll on by?

What is being discussed, by a few adults, is how Isiah's "basketball dealings" are represented.

How many years did the Chicago Bulls rebuild require?

The Knicks demise has been 11 years in the making.

and what was being discussed in this thread were the influences involved.

You've ignored every point originally made and every counterpoint. just blindly asking people have you forgiven Thomas and turned what was a discussion headed somewhere into a race vomit pit.

Its Isiah's EGO not the color of his skin.

McK1 - thay ALL have ego.

The point originally made, the TOPIC of the thread, was about the Bird comments. How can that NOT lead to a discussion of race and perception?

Ignore othet points? Hardly. I've engaged several writers who have more to say than simple-minded knee jerk dirt bombs.

It IS a difficult discussion that makes a lot of people very uncomfortable. Others seek to find answers and actually LISTEN to a different point of view.

From your adverse reaction McK1, it would seem you should stick to superficial comments about basketball games ONLY - and leave it at that.

I'm inclined to think there is more at work than meets the eye.

but that's just me

the first and last thing the author of the original post said about Isiah-Bird was the title.

his essay dealt with Isiah's business dealings and how Isiah didn't fail, he was snaked by the league. Fishmike and myself presented information to counter that. me and killa began to engage in a discussion about the information presented. you came along and put the white posters in this thread on their heels by asking them if they forgave Bird and hence turned a discussion about the economics of Isiah's dealings into a race vomit pit.

and b/c I don't choose to argue in NAACP prose when it comes to the basketball decisions Isiah mades I'm devoid of any depth or lack a "third eye" in your eyes I offer this very Neanderthalish STFU in reply.

Lets just say Isiahs short comings are not due to his race, but his opportinities might have been given considerations. Im sure the league wanted Isiah to be a part of ownership in Detroit. And be the first Majority owner in the league in toronto. Isiah might have been given considerations to make this happen. But race plays no part if he just plain does not have the patience or the buisness savvy that others might have.

Like Magic Johnson. Magic found an arena to be succesfull that might one day evolve to ownership (majority) of a franchise. I think Both jordan and Isiah took a few shortcuts to get in high profile positions that they could not handle. Not cus they black, cus they are not experienced shrewd business people who have been successful at that. Beinga great ball player makes you a great competitior, a rich man, and a Celeberty, but not a business man.

Magic Johnson has run things from the inside and understands.

Isiah being a famous ball player gave him special considerations. Being Black gave him an ownership opportunity in Toronto.

In my opinion, race had nothing to do with his CBA failure. Just plain inexperience of not knowing when your beat or don't have hand.

Inexperience and arrogance is Isiahs shortfalls, not race!

Rent the movie "do the right thing." Spike Lee powerfully showed how some racist white people, were able to still have all Black entertainers as their favorites. One character was blatantly racist, and Michael Jackson was his favorite singer, etc. It was and still is a very easy thing to understand. Just because you like how Jamal Crawford plays basketball doesn't mean you'd be open to marrying or allowing your daughter to marry someone black. Allowing someone to entertain you doesn't mean you aren't prejudiced against them. The fact that I watch women's tennis doesn't mean I'm not a sexist.

All of the "playing the race card" crew and some others have totally missed the point. First, the article wasn't about your personal feelings about Isiah, but the general media onslaught that comes at him that doesn't come at other inept GM's like say Kevin McHale or KiKi Vandehwe or even Scott Layden. The post theorized about the possibility that the bird incident may have turned people against him forever. I think that even when you account for this being NY where everything was blown out of control, he gets an unfair rap imo, and this was a scenario I thought worth discussing. Especially since the original poster supported his positions with counter explanations. This wasn't about disliking him because he's black. What the hell is wrong with you guys? Jesus Christ man.

Race is a major factor of life in the U.S. and to pretend that you don't notice someones skin color is a lie. To say you dont consciously consider it when making judgements is reasonable, but to act like no one does it or it doesn't happen regularly as naive at best, willfully ignorant at worst.

OH and about the white America thing, I didn't say it but I would have. Lets be real here. In the NBA hall of fame, there is a life size cut out of Larry Bird there. The only other player that got something of that magnitude (or greater) was Michael Jordan, who happens to be the best player to ever play the game. Do you think something else is at play there, or am I just playing the race card? It about marketing, and your audience (at the time) was predominantly white so you want to market white players a little more than others. And this white audience is often referred to as white America. Its really very simple.

killa i would argue isiah gets reemed the way he does because rather than play the cut he has chosen to make a news spectacle no matter how big or small from day 1.

people call LB a media whore

Isiah's track record:

- joking on Letterman about Chaney's job security...classless

- having Chaney escorted by security...did he had C4 under the clipboard?

- Shandon's games played streak ended in Atlanta in front of 50 fam & friends allegedly at Isiah'sd behest...yeah I know its all speculative and besides - the only thing guaranteed is your money

- stands in the Tunnel making sure he is seen, som have intimated "overseeing"

* cept when the teams losing badly. then we here he's in Europe scouting...Isiah has no track record of drafting or signing Euros

- takes the podium all-star weekend to announce the KVH trade

- the MSG interview about trying to get rid of Shandon

- the "we don't roll like that" profanity laced rant about Marbury

- goes on SAS talking about beating up Bill Simmons

- answering every question about t he additional payroll he has added while the quality of effort has steadily declined due to his players with "I inherited a mess"...as if Jamal taking momentum killing 22 foot off balance shots early in the shot clock was Layden's fault

No need to apologize, I realize that being black and being forced to deal with racism, and also having a degree in sociology, has made me more well informed about racism (among other things) than most.

I also realize that because racism is such an uncomfortable topic, most people would prefer rather not to think about it. As a result, they don't understand it beyond popular cliches. Racism is like cancer, it is not going to go away by ignoring it, you have to fight it, and in order to fight it, you have to acknowledge that it exists and examine the ways that pops up in everyday life. Thats really the only way to deal with it. BTW, I actually enjoy taling about it because I feel like I can share the things I was taught and pass them on to others and raise the collective consciousness.

Oh my goodness, I think I’ve had this discussion with Hardkore before, but Killa do you really think that American blacks are the only ethnic group prosecuted for centuries in the world? Does it ever occur to you that there are many people in America who come from backgrounds with as much injustice and suffering as you do and actually DO understand where you are coming from? Ask any gypsies, Jew, etc. how they feel about racism and you will be looking in the mirror.

This attitude that no white person can understand what racism is and how it feels to be prosecuted is ignorant to the bone. I was refugee from the country me and both my parents were bourn because of my heritage, and you are going to act like I can't possibly understand what it means to be black in America? Try being a Jew in Europe, and then do it for a good 3000 years. Why do you think blacks and Jews went along together during the 60's? Then the white protestant majority put a lot of effort into polarizing the various minorities, mainly Jews and blacks, along with everybody else like Hispanics and Asians, and viola, the civil rights movement grinds to a halt.

And Earl if you really want to have a discussion then please read my entire post and not just pick our some one line out of that matters the least. To answer you however, I WOULD tolerate IT despite him being a snake. You know why? Because its just a game, and he is not the president of the country. He is just making trades, so if he is an jerk, he is exactly making life and death decision you know.

PS. PLEASE READ MY ENTIRE POST BEFORE RESPONDING!

I don't konw what you've read that would lead you to believe I think that.
Does it ever occur to you that there are many people in America who come from backgrounds with as much injustice and suffering as you do and actually DO understand where you are coming from? Ask any gypsies, Jew, etc. how they feel about racism and you will be looking in the mirror.
I don't know that I'd quite be looking in the mirror, but I don't know what makes you think that I am somehow claiming that my people have a monopoly on suffering.
This attitude that no white person can understand what racism is and how it feels to be prosecuted is ignorant to the bone.
What exactly are you reading man? Are you sure you have a command of the english language?
I was refugee from the country me and both my parents were bourn because of my heritage, and you are going to act like I can't possibly understand what it means to be black in America? I don't know about your version of what happened to the civil rights movement; but I do agree witht he overall point that not only minorities, but all people of all races, ethnicities, and religions ought to unite, but along class lines. Working class people ought to fight for their own interests, and not just for the interests of people who look like or worship like them. Racism actually hurts all working class people, whether they realize it or not. Thats why I take it so seriously. It is a dangerous ideology that has set back human progress considerably.

Yes, we have discussed this before and I will repeat now what I said then- NO GROUP has gone though more suffering at the hands of others than Those of African desecent. Between the Arab and European slave trades alone, feel free to tell us who has lost more in sheer numbers.

Does it ever occur to you that there are many people in America who come from backgrounds with as much injustice and suffering as you do and actually DO understand where you are coming from?

NO. You have not gone though MY experience, so you caqn't campare yours to it when you have no idea about what my experience IS. Killa already tried to paint that picture for you.

Ask any gypsies, Jew, etc. how they feel about racism and you will be looking in the mirror.

Dooesn't compare when you're talking about discrimination of a specific people at the magnitude it has been wraught on Black people.

This attitude that no white person can understand what racism is and how it feels to be prosecuted is ignorant to the bone.

It's even more ignorant to assume you know someone else's culture better than those those have lived that culture for generations. Whether or not you think you know what racism in america "feels like" is irrelevant.

I was refugee from the country me and both my parents were bourn because of my heritage, and you are going to act like I can't possibly understand what it means to be black in America?

Last time I looked, being a white immigrant was ALOT different than a Black american, historically. You're coming off really crass right now... So NO, you never could. Stop thinking you have it so figured out.

Try being a Jew in Europe, and then do it for a good 3000 years.

Jews aren't a race. We covered this before, Simrud. Feel free to take it there again?

Why do you think blacks and Jews went along together during the 60's? Then the white protestant majority put a lot of effort into polarizing the various minorities, mainly Jews and blacks, along with everybody else like Hispanics and Asians, and viola, the civil rights movement grinds to a halt.

Check your references, fella. COINTELPRO had a whole lot more to do with the civil rights movement halting than amy point you mention there.

And Earl if you really want to have a discussion then please read my entire post and not just pick our some one line out of that matters the least. The correct word is Persecuted Simrud

>>This attitude that no white person can understand what racism is and how it feels to be prosecuted is ignorant to the bone.

Ignorant to the bone?

That's funny. You had me with the awkward NAACP reference as if you have a single ounce of understanding of the relationship between that pioneer organization and the shaping of government policy and legal opinion. I had to clean up my keyboard from the unexpected and sudden iced-tea spit take.

As the lucid and cogent Killa4 suggests, "are you sure you have a command of the english language?"

The discussion was NOT about Isiah Thomas... so put your out of focus coke-bottle glasses aside for a moment - the discussion is wheter the opinion of Isiah is shaped by how people are pre-biased by his backing of Rodman's comments on the sacred Larry Brown.

Pay attention

Killa - rock on til the break of dawn

Take Saer Sene and/ or Shawne Williams
