Personally I think it's just another excuse. Just another way to cover up for a lack of effort. It's Larry, it's not us. It's Don chaney, not us. It's Lenny, not us. It's Herb not us. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Frank Isola on SAS:

Two "prominent" players made the comment.

This information was revealed after the game in the locker room by players.

When Larry got ejected some players were laughing and joking.

solution... find a new mechanic who knows what the hell he's doing & has built fast cars before. (& no, i'm not bashing LB)
well TMS... there's one argument isnt there? What cars has Isiah built? He's proven he find good parts (draft) but he's lousy at putting them together. Thats not just here, its other places he's been also.

solution: put Isiah in charge of ordering new parts only... LB in charge of tune ups, transmissions & engine work... we still need an engineer who knows how the parts need to fit & work together in order to make a machine we can win some races with... any suggestions?

one example of the pick and roll delima...

on my football team, we historically play man to man defense. No matter the offensive formation...we've done it for years and it's been successfull...this year we had some players that weren't as confident in their man to man skills and looked to install a zone for certain situations.

Whenever we went to the zone, we gave up a HUGE play.

Is it the zone, is it the personel? who knows.

But one thing for sure, if we simplified the zone we wouldn't have given up the big plays, or

always played it one way

I think defending the pick and roll for LB means it's a situational thing...if the man is hot, if the mismatch is this, if the personel is, if this then, if that then, if if if if.

Instead of...

ALWAYS SWITCH

or

NEVER SWITCH

I think that's what they mean by simplify, pick a poison.

with the previous coaches, the knicks always switched, remember marbs guarding Nowitski...still worked, but I think lb is throwing LB 101, 102 and 103 at the team and they are still trying to understand LB 101.

He's giving them too much to digest too early...may have worked on the pistons who had a set roster and personel going into his first season, but a team with half new players and all kids, it's time for him to simplify SOMETHING.

But hey, maybe if they lose every game AND digest LB 101, 102 and 103, next year will be the exact opposite of this year.

Maybe.

well one problem is Isiah traded away all his store credit and cant get good parts until 2008. As for LB I would say NO. Get a like minded GM or GM prospect he's worked with before with some vision and fundamental knowledge of the salary cap and go from there

RVhoss: It's probably something to that effect. I wouldn't be surprised if you were dead on. I think that is the difference between our situation and Detroit. Flip can come in and change everything and players will get it in a short period of time because they understand the game and understand the simple concepts.

Here our team is like a college team. Knowledge wise some of our guys are literally like high school players. Unfortunately what LB thinks is simple is very difficult to this team. Ideally he would like to have the vets play and have the players grasp the concepts and play when they do. But in our situation they are being forced to learn these simple concepts on the court. That's why we are being forced to adjust. It will be one step at a time.

Unfortunately for the players this is going to make it more difficult or harder for them. If I as a coach dummy the playbook down for you and you still don't get it, the response is going to be even more severe. You begin to run out of excuses for not playing hard at that point.

rv you play tackle? I did for 4 years. In those 4 we ran BR's 46 defense and never lost a game tying only once. Full contact no pads. 4 teams. At one point we had 30-40 people a week coming to see us and the NJ Star Ledger did a small piece on us. We never even had a team name but were dubbed "black" by the teams we played. It was for 2 reasons, one we had black jerseys and 2 we played teams from Patterson and Roselle. They called us black because their teams were all black guys and ours was about 50/50. Go figure. Kind of a joke but it stuck.
We ran 3 plays. Sweep left, dive off tackle and a bomb pass. We had one reciever. A white kid who printed "the burner" on the back of his jersey. He ran one and only one pattern. Fly. He also scored about 2-3 TDs a game. We never lost because we played unselfish and together. This kid was a prima donna. Never got his jersey dirty but knew he only did what he did because guys like me blocked for his pretty ass.
We were built around a defense that was smaller and faster (by alot) than every team we played against. Hell... at 6'4 and 215 I was one of the biggest guys. We had a full back who was 5'9/240 (all natural) and whos blocking was simply legendary. We swarmed, hit, and swarmed some more. I would tell you more about it but the 2 concussions erased a little of the data. Still I know we were good. We played simple and we played team.

I dont know what LB is doing at practice or why his team cant get it. I do know the lack of fundamentals are clear even to my poorly trained eye. I also know from watching NBA ball that winning any other way is fools gold if gold at all.

yeah, in my mind I see us just not quite getting to the shooters and to the spots...is it effort? I don't know, I find that sometimes you could be using too much brain power to make sure you are int he right spots, instead of understanding the situation and reacting to what you see.

Like Kobe...I don't remember Phil Jackson advocating kobe just play zone and roam on defense, but he does because he understands his responsibility on defense, so he freelances within the structure of the defense.

Most of the defensive changes (that I've witnesses imho) are when they are covering for Crawford;s lack of defense.

Frye has to rotate then someone else has to rotate and so on but crawford is still following his man that beat him off the dribble or over a screen and in reality he's supposed to continue the rotation to the open man...with him being a guard, this usually leads to a wide open 3.

But, like I said, theya re getting better, I've seen frye getting closer to his man, I've seen craw not get beat as much on defense as before (unfortunately, his offense/ball handling is suffering), but they are getting it...it's just a shame they didn't get to get it in training camp.

I think a set rotation would cure these ills, players will have a feel for who can cover who and over compensate accordingly, but if one play marbs is covering the SG and the next play it's craw, then the next play it's Nate, it's tough for frye (or any other big) to know when to rotate, when not to rotate.

Just needs to simplify it on defense...we're all in agreement that we aren't too worried about the offense.

I disagree about the set rotation thing. It definitely would make us a better team. LB has mentioned this twice publicly. But unfortunately we cannot teach guys how to play if we aren't going to lay out consequences for lack of effort or making the same mistakes over and over again. We have to finally set a higher standard. A standard that cannot be compromised. Once you compromise you lose the players. I'm telling you the day LB dos this is the day he is either going to quit or you are about to see 4 or 5 guys jettisoned.

I think Channing is working hard but like I've said a million times basketball is a game of habits. You have to change the bad habits and reinforce the good ones. You can go over some things a thousand times. Players listen for 3 plays and then revert back to what they were doing before. You can tell a person to stop biting their nails and they will but the next time they are nervous they will do it again. We need to smack their hands everytime those fingers go in their mouths. Channing is guarding mobile players and is learning positioning. I'm fine with this. We all understand it's going to take a while for him to grasp this concept. But this doesn't mean you coddle him and let him play when he makes the same mistake 4 TRIPS IN A ROW. But as a fan I'm saying don't worry because Channing will get sick of getting yanked and will learn soon. One day it will just click and he will find himself positioning better without realizing he is. That day his minutes will skyrocket and we will all be saying how his D has improved.

Crawford I disagree highly. This guy does not even attempt to fight through a screen. He runs at shooters after they are in their shooting motion to make it appear that he is trying to get out on them. It's false hustle and is clear when you know what to look for. I watched him specifically in the LA game and don't understand how he thinks his team could possibly win with him playing this way. Then he loses confidence not realizing that it is his insufficient effort that is contributing to his lack of performance which leads to his loss of confidence.

I could break down every trip for you if you were watching with me and show you some obvious things that you don't see when you just watch the game as a fan. Some of the things they do on the court, away from the ball are mind boggling. I would yell at 5th graders for doing the same things. The funny thing is 5th graders would listen and figure it out after 3 games. Millionaires tune you out becasue they are millionaires and no one should talk to them that way.

Pimp My Ride

fishmike - Not that I've ever built anything more complicated than tricycle but that never stopped anyone from fooling around on Real GM. I'll employ your automobile analogy and play along:

You have this used stock car with high mileage. The motor is showing signs as the rings are blowing blue smoke out of the rusted exhaust. The guys down at West Coast Customs laughing their colective asses off at the paint job.

While everyone i s laughing and pointing fingers, a smiling mechanic from Chicago finally rolls up his sleeves and gets to work.

He bores out the engine core (center) and replaces it with a bigger set of Curry pistons for added acceleration. The worn forward camshaft is replaced a shiny new one shipped in from Arizona and a reconditioned spare from the Continental Store.

Someone thought the number 3 steering column needed to be trashed but it was only in need of a new shock absorber and some realignment.

The guys down at Aamco found a special order rebuilt transmission in a Memphis shop that another customer never picked up. It appears to have little or no wear in the gears but needs to be broken in slowly.

One new front tire, and a used rear bumper are spotted in the back of a salvage yard that people have picked over. Lee and Davis is scribbled on the parts and they are thrown into a pickup truck.

The crusty brown starter is unpredictible at times and doesn't appear to be properly connected to the ignition because of its randomly moving parts. The ignition is as tempermental as the weather.

Meanwhile, the speaker system (the press) is a cacophony of irritatingly negative noise. The (talk) radio sucks.

The car runs rough for the first few miles, and the miles per gallon are dreadfully poor. The owner is considering selling it for parts.

Then someone remembers to finally check the oil.

Suddenly, the car is running smoother. The mechanic is feeling so much better that he's looking for a DVD Player.
