I just said it about 5 seconds ago on another thread, and I'll say it again:

wow.

I have a lot of appreciation for Houston. Aside from Ewing he was as important as any Knick in the last 10 years. He hit big shots, he was an all star and he always played hard. He did his best to get back but his body simply failed him. I truly hope he is not remembered for saying YES to the "the contract" and is remembered for being one of the league's deadly sharp shooters and good guys.

And not to mention one of the biggest one dimensional players in the NBA as well.

Well, make that the most well paid, one-dimensional players in the NBA. But hey, few players in the NBA did better w/ as little skill.

Err, scratch that. If Houston had a little more fast twitch muscle, he'd have been everything that Ray Allen is... it would have meant maybe 1 extra board, 2 extra points...

Hello-- it doesn't matter a whit whether Houston's salary comes off the cap early. If you subtract his $20.7M from next year's salary, assume no free agent signings, and assume Isiah lets Penny's and AD's salaries expire, we're still sitting at about $80M salary next season, still well over the cap. And Houston's contract comes off the books for the following season anyway. This retirement has no effect on our ability to sign free agents. At best, insurance picks up the tab and saves Dolan some cash. BFD.

I don't care if it comes off the team's payroll; I'm hoping we can get a *trade* exception like we did when McDyess got injured.

I remember some discssion back during the "Allan Houston Rule" waiver period, that if a player retires medically, team dosen't have to pay luxury tax on the contract. Does anyone know if this is the case? I know his $$ stay on the cap, but is it subject to the luxury tax?

If we do get a trade exception, how long before it expires? Unless it lasts past the end of the season, even a trade exception probably wouldn't mean much. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it would function much differently from Penny's and AD's expiring contracts in terms of how it could be used in a trade.

Either way, it probably doesn't make a difference in terms of what player transactions Isiah could make. Remember Allan fondly but don't count on this being a factor in terms of how the team can be improved, other than opening up an extra roster spot.

I seroisly dougt that Isiah would have a problem making a beneficial deal before a trade exception expires. Even if he gets first round picks, he won't let a trading chip slip away and simply expire.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

this may be true from the KNicks' perspective, but not the other team. We could trade Rose and his $6M salary with the trade expection and have that add up to something like $12M coming in. The other team - if they are over the cap - would save $12M a year (including luxury tax $). That's a lot, and a good chip to have. It's the chip that other teams want.

Tom, I agree. I think his retirement is much more beneficial for the roster spot it opens.

Now that after this year, we'll have a slightly less bloated payroll, maybe people we see that payroll and salary cap doesn't matter to us. That's why writers like ford and Bitchh lawrence don't like the knicks - they think we're not playing by "the rules." We're never going to get below the cap to sign somebody nor do we necessarily need to.

I think people think that if we can get the payroll down a bit, maybe all these stupid sportswriters won't have as much ammunition. who cares?!

I dont like Allan Houston and I am not shedding any tears if he retires but he is a New York Knick and I am a Knicks fan. He is the last of a proud group. I have to respect him for what he has done over the last 9 years. He showed up in playoff games and was never afraid to take the last shot. It sucks that the worst years in the decade came on his watch. He was a good Knick never complained about anything. He has my respect.

Good luck in the future Allan Houston, I hope you do very well.

Can we use the medical exception to sign Sprewell?!

That question put Dolan in the hospital!

I don't think Spree will ever grace a Knick jersey again.

Exactly; the reason I want a trade exception is precisely because it would work similarly to an expiring contract like AD's or Penny's (except that it would be smaller but would have the appealing qualities to other teams of not taking up a roster spot and not being money that they actually have to spend. A $5 mil trade exception is a MUCH better trade asset than a $5 mil expiring contract unless the contract is from a good player.)

Houston was money in the playoffs. Its sad he or anyone has to end his NBA career of a knee injury. But when he did get his chance in the spotlight he came through big time. And he just came up big for us again by retirering and letting us save a lot of money off his contract.

His jumper was a thing of beuty.

First of all: thanks to Allan for ten mostly great years. It's a shame the knee injury surfaced after his best season (statistically) and he never really got to play with Marbury. But I'll never forget the great Knicks teams he was on with Ewing and then with Spree and Camby.

Next, it seems like we don't get an exception, but maybe Allan's salary can come off the books for 06-07. Which may not seem like much, but that would save $40 million ($20 in salary/$20 in luxury) and it may allow Zeke to make a big trade with Penny's deal.

I'm just mainly glad that Allan was allowed to retire on his terms and not put himself through another embarassing 10 game season. I'm also glad that it clears up the murky lineup situation that would have occured if he played. Also, now we can sign Matt Barnes for the season. I like him, he reminds me of a young Shandon.

He was a big scorer in college, but his jumper looks so much more developed now. Craziness.

Maybe this gives us room to sign Barber to something small, no?
