They did not, that trade cleared about 13m between Kemba and the #11 picks salary. We were right at the salary cap before the trade. We still needed to move Burks and Noel to create room for Brunson but without unloading the first 13m in that trade we wouldn't have enough.

All in all DET was the team that really helped us land Brunson and it was b/c we got them their man in Duren.

Assuming for a money that your math works, without checking roster holds and cap holds, they didn’t KNOW that all they would need was $25mm when they made that cap clearing trade. They could have been in a bidding war with Dallas. They could have had a bidding war with any other team in the league. You cannot look back with 20/20 vision and criticize a cap clearing move that made it possible to sign a FA and say they cleared too much cap because the FA signed for less than the entire cap space.

No offense but thinking that this deal was negotiated after free agency opened is naive. Trading the pick did not free up the money needed to sign Jalen and it is extremely unlikely they didn't know exactly what they needed. It was likely made to increase the amount of draft capital available in a Mitchell trade. That didn't happen. The picks still could help in another trade or be used. They are not worthless, they just were not received in a trade that led to us signing Jalen Brunson.

we had zero cap space going into that draft. And if we drafted someone at #11 it would have been negative cap space. Not sure how you can say shedding $13m wasn't a huge part of getting Brunson, and DET then took on another $18m from us later on in the 2nd trade. Do they do that without the rapport we had established with them? Who knows, but we needed that $13m to sign Brunson.

We did. You are pretending without moving 11 nothing else can happen. They did not need to move a lottery pick to get off a small expiring deal. They traded the pick to increase their war chest for a trade.

DET took on Kemba's salary because they wanted Duren.

The trade was to add picks for the future of course, but it was also to clear cap.

Clearing cap for Brunson was just icing on the cake though, getting those future 1sts for #11 in a bad draft was a huge win on it's own.

The 11th pick is not the going rate for dumping an 8 million dollar expiring. If it was we wouldn't have gotten draft capital in return for Kemba and 11. It also was not a weak draft. The only guy that looks like a bust is Davis

it's not the going rate at all, which is why we got 3 future 1sts in addition, which IMO is well above the going rate.

We killed two birds with that 1 trade. Acquire future picks, + clear $13m in cap. Not sure how anyone can argue that.

What I argued was that they did not "need" to trade 11 to have the cap space needed to sign Brunson and that the draft wasn't weak

Charlotte and Indiana both seem to have similar teams, both can be bad or greatly improved. When you have a talented point guard like Ball and Haliburton you can't be counted out.

They easily could be. Hayward could also play 70 games, the wife beater could pick up where he left off, Scary Terry could move back too an off ball roll and be a high volume high % shooter/scorer, and Mark Williams could start looking like a mini Mitch. Add in PJ, Brandon Miller, plus that French guard they signed and while they need things yo break right they have the talent for a turnaround

I guess the real MVP will be their PR department if they don’t implode. Can you just imagine an argument between Brandon Miller and Miles Bridges over who is the worse d-bag?
