Now what really happend? The event PHilC mentions was the 2003 allstar game. It was not 3 years after, it was the 5th season after. Jordan sat out 3 years, and played 2 more years with Wiz. Michael Jordan served as President of Basketball Operations and minority owner for the Washington Wizards from January 2000 to May 2003, with a mixed, ultimately disappointing tenure. While he brought national attention, sold out arenas, and improved the team's record, his management was marked by poor draft choices (most notably Kwame Brown at #1 in 2001) and, after returning to play for the team, he was fired by owner Abe Pollin. Brandon Haywood, also former teammate of Vince from UNC had indicated (Videos of him saying this) that David Stern went full "mafia don", did not ask Vince, he "Told" Vince he would give Jordan his spot. Stern knew the hype would help the game. Iverson and vince was the new face of the NBA. Perhaps the fable was Vince wanted to honor his UNC god and Jordan was not wanting to do this. It still occured. Jordan started. It was a nice moment even if not as pure as perhaps advertised. One who is into conspiracy perhaps in retrospect might see how Vince mailed it in less than two seasons later without impunity forcing his trade out of Toronto at a bargain price. Perhaps Stern thought Nets run might be a good thing for the NBA. It really was not. Nets in Jersey never really had a national traction. Thats a another story for another day. Phil, if you want to teach people or remind them of things don't be lazy. Give some context. It was an intersting occurance. As for the game? Adding the skills thing, dunk contest, the Rising stars, making it over two days....Etc. All attempts to raise exposure for the game, attendance, profits for host city, etc.......all over decades to make it more appealing and slowed its demise to some extent. Its been dying for a very long time. |
