Fish-

Everyone picks a bust, because there are very few sure things, especially in this draft. But you couldn't tell that on this board when it comes to 2 players, Bogut & Bynum.

Joe-

I am anti-buyout until all options have been exhausted. There may be a team willing to dump a star for some relief and a pick, I wouldn't buy those guys out until I was certain I couldn't get a really good player, and/or pick for them.

The thing is, I personally would like to see us stop with the whole expiring contract thing, and here is why, all the dead weight we take back kills us. The ONLY way I would even consider one of these expiring contract deals is we get a star ( remember there are only like 6 guys that make more than Penny (Shaq, Houston, Webber, Mutumbo, Garnett, Kidd )http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htmmeaning we will have to take bad contracts to even out contracts. I would want a superstar and expiring contracts for filler. Just no more bad contracts. I always have the opinion that if it isn't working blow it up, Penny is hurting this team and doesn't want to be here and IMO it would put us at a disadvantage because of the long term financial hardships. I would rather just buy him out to remove him from the situation especially if we need the spot.

I understand you, but I am not with you. If we take a bad contract that expires the same year as Houston's, I say bring it on! Even one year longer is acceptable to me, as long as the player is a star or very important to our team (Dalembert).

Until H20 is off we wont be anywhere near the cap. If we can use one of these guys to get us a key piece to the puzzle, it must be done. Cap space is over rated and buying these guys out doesn't put us at the cap or even close still. We should seee what we can get.

I mean this is all hypothetical, but what if we can get Artest, Brand, or a player of that calibur. You have to do it, you just have to do it.

cap space may be tough in atlanta or charlotte but cap space in ny means we either have shaq or kobe right now.

True, but there will be no cap space for us in the next 4-5 years without blowing things up. It just makes more sense to make a run with what we have than to blow things up.

Ok...here is a flip side to using Penny in a trade. Say we trade Penny for an All-star caliber player (like Artest)...Hypothetically speaking, a trade of Penny for Artest, Anthony Johnson, and Scott Pollard. Pollard is a FA after the season, so maybe we cut him. We still have to take AJ, meaning there is a roster spot gone (for 3 years) and a roster spot that is not occupied by a young developing player. I don't think Penny's contract will net us anything big, but it's just my opinion. I'd rather have a Bynum or Turiaf on the bench instead of Penny.

actually, cap space is a VERY feasble goal if you want it to be. The two guys you need to focus on moving are Rose and KT. If you can do that (very plausable) you are left with only Marbury and Crawford signed past 2 years from now. KYD, Mo T, TT, Penny, Shandon, Houston.. all come off the books after the year after next (or before in TT/Penny's case).

If the Knicks just stocked up on picks for the next 2 years and focused on the draft they would be in tremendous position. They could then in 2 years 06-07 season look to move Marbury for an expiring contract and pick near the deadline, and that could put us in posititon to have $20mm plus in cap space.

Lets think, Billy Knight flew in from Atlanta to NY, not a scout, the GM of the Hawks, the same guy who drafted Pau Gasol, Josh Smith and was able to clear the Hawks out in 2 years, who has Marvin williams or Bogut wrapped on a platter, with no more picks in the first round, why would he waste valuable time making a trip like that when all he has is pick #2? Why, after the workout, did Jerry West fly him in the day after?

Briggs, please don't start using Billy Knight as a role model for a GM. The Hawks are laughing stock. Clear them out, so what. They can't get anyone to come. Hawks are giving away season tickets by the boat load. Josh Smith dunks the ball extremely well.... Well you know so did Harold Miner, and Fred Jones. Now they are looking to trade Al Harrington before he just comes to his sense and leaves.

Please cross Shaq's name off that list, he said he can't play in NY, too much traffic.
