I think most of us agreed with Shumps assessment even last year but at the same time why Thibs would be resistant to the logic?
The notion of "Favoritism" to the Brunsons like some rec league dad playing his sun is not logical at this level.
That Mikal pushed back on Thibs for reasons not specific is also interesting.
Would Thibs been able to adapt? Had he rubbed Mikal the wrong way? Is Jalen on board with this also?
That Thibs who is "stubborn" but he also has changed some. But not enough?
I think Indy showed that defense first is not the only way to win and Thibs roster was not as it had been.
We all saw how hard the offense was last year. I called it a "knife fight" during the playoffs. So many lead swings it was crazy.

Perhaps our players who take discounts see a bigger picture where the money/ego can be shared and all succeed? Its a nice thought.

Always go back to same point when in the “less iso” conversation.
Which is to emphasize that this is the NBA and that there is a reason coaches go to it.
Shump is probably speaking from years of frustration being told to stand in the corner and work of it.
NBA is a ISO league. Meaning, each team has a guy who is gifted at creating his own shot.
Coaches know that those players will get them a good shot. Either with their individual ability or ball rotation off a double team.
I too would love to see a heavy ball movement offense with great cuts and passing.
Issue is that this type of offense, with its many moving parts, creates more chances for turnovers.
Reason why an ISO heavy offense is the go to late in games.
Main problem I had with Brunson heavy offense, was JB’s inability to pass out of double teams. Which I felt was a size issue and due to JB holding the ball too long. Hopefully they work on how to overcome that this year. Since I am sure Brown, like most coaches in the NBA, will rely on ISO as well.

Knicks lack ball handlers. Ben used to be able to defend 1-5 too. It's an off the bench role for perhaps a 3rd string PG.

If Simmons did come here there wouldn’t be much pressure on him to be the man like he was in Philly which is what started his meltdown. We have our 4 stars (JB, OG, KAT, Kale)Simmons would just be a role player off the bench. He can play multiple positions from PG to PF. Yes he can’t shoot the 3 but he can shoot from the perimeter so he wouldn’t hurt spacing.


Simmons mitigates our depth issue at Center because he can play the 4 while KAT plays Center.

Agree that he is a versatile defenders.
Clarkson and Yabu do help.
Would have to stay away from playing him with Mitch and Hart.
He may be the only option. Others rumored seem to prefer more money or more available minutes.

Joel Embid hurt again ? How long before he gets bought out ? I always thought he was a good guy until that series a few years ago. What a dirty cheat. Soon Hukporti will have more value then Embid.

Thank god we never did a Randle/Mitch trade for him as we supposedly were interested in him 2 years ago. Can you imagine that? Would have been McDyess all over again. We seriously dodged a bullet! If Philly had been smart, they should have just dumped him on us and took all our young players/picks away. Whenever you guys get upset at KAT for anything, just remember that he could easily have been Embiid sitting on the bench in a cast.

Especially at a vet min price, I am kinda interested in what type of different looks Ben Simmons could give the Knicks. I look at it as just one more option that Brown would have to deploy, especially when in playoffs and teams are hawking Brunson.

Brunson Mikal OG Simmons KAT is a kinda wild lineup. Put the ball in Ben's hands and let him go hog wild passing with cutters and spacers and shooters around him.

I bought this up a few weeks back when his "again" issues resurfaced as did PG13 recent procedure.
That Leon was. his agent and "when will he ask out" was the surface topic. That one series was really quite filled with drama. His dirty play was magnified by his physical issues. the knee brace which he could barley move and he resorted to grabbing on defense. The brace was a weapon. As the series developed he got more mobile.
The Bells Palsey and needing drops in his eye was quite a feat. One might have called his performance "heroic" if not for the frustration by the home teams fans and his very disturbing dirty play. He looked really nasty out there.

Recall he was the MVP in 2023!!! 9th in DPOY voting. thru 39 games in 2023-24 he was avg. 34 ppg and all-star before the injury. Former all Def teams. He choose team USA over france and played in olympics 2024!
He played just 19 games last season.

This Pitino conversation is fair commentary but more indicative in the change to the sport than the nature of PGs.

Offense (Shot Priority)
1) Brunson
2) KAT
3) Bridges
4) OG
5) Hart/Mitch

Defense
Wing 1 (On Ball)
Wing 2
Wing 3
Low (Strong Side)
Low (Weak Side)

Thing is - this defense is just a scheme and will have to adapt to the opponents offense. If the opponent runs a 5 out, you need something closer to 4 or 5 wings.

In terms of passing, ball movement is a team concept.

Brunson doesn’t guard the point position. Brunson isn’t expected to pass up good looks. He probably shouldn’t be required to bring the ball up past half court rather than get himself to a position to initiate offense.

It might be the case that there are no more “point guards” but it’s more a melding of the wing position imo.

Been saying this about JB for a couple of years. Most took it as a put down but point was mostly that “True PG’s” are a dying breed. And that he has a sixth man mentality of focusing on scoring.

Funny thing is Simmons is probably closest out there to the old school mold.
